Yom HaShoah MemorialYom HaShoah MemorialYom HaShoah MemorialYom HaShoah Memorial
It was a solemn atmosphere as the students in grades 4-8
entered the multi-purpose room for the Yom HaShoah
commemoration. Dr. Katz spoke about the significance of
remembering the atrocities that occurred. Six candles were lit by
survivors and children of survivors, including Rabbi Blau, Mrs.
Marta Mayer, Mrs. Levovitz, Mrs. Dick, Rabbi Bodlander and
Sammy Krost, on behalf of the Elbaum family.
The 8th grade girls memorialized those who showed amazing
strength during the war. Odette Ades spoke about those who
acted with dignity, Rachel Benatar spoke about kindness, Shira
Harary about those who responded with physical resistance,
Esther Mizrahi about those who created a record, Esther Leventer
about those special people who fought the Nazis with spiritual
resistance and finally, Mariel Dweck spoke about those who hid
from the Nazis.
Nathan Ades and Joey Araman's voices echoed through the crowd
as they sang their solos of Shemah Yisrael and Keli Keli.
Rabbi Blau recited the Kaddish and Kel Male Rachamim.
Thank you to the narrators and thank you to Mrs. Rishty, Morah
Dahlia, Rabbi Beyda, Mrs. Steinfeld, Rabbi Somekh and Mrs.
Levovitz for coordinating such an inspiring program.

The program concluded with the hope that Hashem will wipe
away our tears and that there will be peace throughout the world
for all of its inhabitants.

Remembering the HolocaustRemembering the HolocaustRemembering the HolocaustRemembering the Holocaust
By: Camille Greenberg
On Friday, April 24, 2009, the 7th grade girls taught the 5th
graders a small amount of what they knew about the Holocaust.
My group taught a 5th grader, Janie, what we knew about the
death camps and the kinder transport. One of the girls in my
group, Shani, brought in her photo album from her trip to
Auschwitz, and Janie seemed very interested in them. Next, we
showed her pictures of the death camps, memorials, the broken
crematoriums and much more. Afterwards, we showed her
photos from the internet of the Holocaust. We asked her to paste
them to a paper. We then asked her to cut words from a
magazine that described her feelings about each picture. It came
out very nice. It was fun working with Janie, especially since she
is my sister, and I think that I speak for both of us when I say
that we learned a lot.

friends, Joy and Shani. Shani brought in a memorable photo
album of all the things she saw during her visit to Auschwitz. The
girls explained the pictures to me. One of the most depressing
things that I learned was that if a Jew tried to steal bread, a Nazi
would hang him in front of the entire camp. Afterwards, I made a
collage of pictures and words about the Holocaust. It came out
beautiful, but I was still somber about the 6,000,000 Jews who
died during the Holocaust.

You didn't have to be in Israel on Wednesday April 29th to feel
"Israeli" when Hillel Yeshiva celebrated Yom HaZikaron and Yom
Haatzmaut. Students at Hillel Yeshiva gathered together for an
amazing program.
The 7th grade boys, under the direction of Rabbi Vaknin, began
by speaking about those who lost their lives in Israel's quest for
peace. The lowering of the flag and the moment of silence when
the siren sounded created a solemn mood as students paid
tribute to those kedoshim.
Then the festivities began! The boys traced Israel's history with a
PowerPoint presentation that visually projected images. The 7th
grade girls, under the direction of Tali and Efrat, performed
Daglanut in a superb formation. The makhela, under the direction
of Morah Dahlia, sang moving songs about Israel and our hope
for peace. Later in the day, the younger grades participated in a
shiriya. The school was decorated in blue and white and the love
of Israel was palpable.
In the evening, the program was repeated at Congregation
Magen David of West Deal.
Let us hope and pray that next year we all celebrate together in
Yerushalayim!

3T Celebrates Earth Day3T Celebrates Earth Day3T Celebrates Earth Day3T Celebrates Earth Day
For Earth Day, the children in 3T had various discussions about
keeping the earth clean. Since it rained on Earth Day, the
children went outside the next day and cleaned the playground.
They are much more conscious of the earth around them and are
making an effort to keep the school clean.

Class 3T has been working very hard writing stories in the genre
"realistic fiction." They celebrated with a lovely Publishing Party
last week. All the children read their pieces. They are already
eager to begin working on their next pieces.

The morning rain ended, the clouds disappeared and the day
began to look brighter as the ELC students lined up for an
authentic parade! Hillel Yeshiva's ELC students approached this

event with wide-eyed wonder. Children dressed in blue and white
waved their Israeli flags as they marched in unison, displaying
their most original banners. Spirited marching music by our
talented Morah Sima complemented the atmosphere of joy and
camaraderie. When grades 1, 2 & 3 joined us, the children really
felt like they were part of a major event. The school dignitaries
who were in attendance, Dr. Katz, Rabbi Bodlander and Mrs.
Czermak, made our salute to Israel complete. An impressive
parent audience clapped enthusiastically as the children sang an
amazing repertoire of Israel related songs, accompanied by
adorable choreography, as well. The icing on the cake was
actually a cake! A seven foot high birthday cake was brought into
the gym as the children sang various renditions of "Yom Huledet
Sameach." Thanks to the ELC Morot who's exciting, informative
and meaningful lessons helped the children understand the
significance of this special day. May we continue to celebrate
joyous milestones and occasions!
