Key issues for Care Homes● Care homes are occupied 24 hours a day,

7 days a week. A continuous demandcontrolled ventilation system is suited tothis type of environment. Passivent carehome ventilation systems are energyefficient coupled with low initial cost andlower life time running costs.

● Rooms within a care home have differentprinciple pollutants. Humidity in somerooms and odours in others. Passiventventilation systems are designed to suitthe relevant pollutant in each roomwhether this is humidity or odour related.

● Rooms are occupied for different lengthsand times across the 24 hours.Automatic demand control ventilation issuited to this type of environment as itremoves the need for occupantinteraction, automatically switching onwhen and where required detecting risesin pollutants and responding accordingly.Passivent ventilation systems are effectiveand energy efficient.

● In care homes, as little occupant input aspossible is required. Intermittentextraction that relies on an occupier is notideal as research has shown there is oftena risk of insufficient ventilation or overventilation increasing energy costs. Oftenthe ventilation is not sufficient to reducehumidity and maintain levels below the70% target for prolonged periods.Passivent ‘intelligent’ ventilation systemsremove the need for occupier interaction.

● Ventilation systems are required to bequiet to reduce disturbance. At night with low demand, the fan speedreduces meaning less noise and thereforeless disturbance. Passivent constantlyrunning low power fans are discrete andenergy efficient.

Important factors for a Care Homeventilation solution include

● Good indoor air quality providing fresh air all year round

● Maintaining relative humidity below 70%to control condensation

● Effectively removing pollutants

Passivent intelligent Mechanical ExtractVentilation (iMEV) is the intelligentventilation system that caters for multi-occupancy care homes where individualrooms and areas require different extractionrates. Passivent iMEV is intelligent in that itremoves the need for occupant interaction, automatically increasing extraction whenand where required.

Passivent iMEV care home system works bydrawing polluted air (moisture laden, odoursetc.) via air extracts located in ‘wet’ rooms(en-suite bathrooms, kitchens etc.) using acentral fan and exhausting this air throughducting to roof-mounted terminals.

To ensure the polluted air is replaced,through-wall or window vents allow fresh airfrom outside to enter. These vents aretypically placed within habitable rooms suchbedrooms and living areas.

This cycle of stale air out and fresh air inensures good indoor air quality and a freshclean environment. Importantly, it alsoremoves moisture which can otherwise leadto damp and mould.

Passivent iMEV automatically detects rises in humidity and responds accordingly. The system only increases extraction whenrequired, so it uses much less energy as thecentral fan is not running at a higher speedunnecessarily. Heat loss is also reduced asiMEV relies on demand control (extractionwhen and where required), extraction is only increased in the areas where humidityhas risen.

Constant pressure systemWith a constant pressure fan, automaticcontrol of the humidity sensitive extractssituated in wet rooms (eg en-suitebathrooms) and a fan pressure sensormaintains the overall system pressure. This increases extraction in the areas whererequired, whilst keeping a sufficient level ofventilation in other rooms. At night timewhen there is low humidity and low demand the fan speed reduces to the quietest minimum setting.

A Constant Pressure system is ideally suited to provide effective ventilation forcare homes.

Automatic humidity-sensitive, some withswitched boostUsed to provide fully automatic extractionbased on humidity levels within wet rooms(kitchens and bathrooms). Can also be boostedby the user if additional extraction is required(switch located in the vicinity causes extract toopen further, increasing the level of extraction).Suitable for use within residential and caremulti-occupancy buildings where individualusers may be unable to control the systemeffectively.

Constant volume with switched boostThe A141E is particularly suited as part of aventilation solution whereby a constant level ofventilation required is for the majority of thetime, whilst still offering occupants the optionto boost ventilation.

Constant volume with passive infra-red boostProvides constant extraction at a relatively lowlevel but boosts automatically for 30 minutesupon detecting a presence within the room. This has the added advantages withinbathrooms as it can be used to tackle odour as well as humidity.

Constant volumeExtract is set at a constant level so extraction is always the same. Increased extraction isregulated by fan speed rather than the extractitself. Suitable for when similar levels ofextraction are always required (kitchens, store rooms).

Boost switchConstant boost switch

Passivent have a wide range of extractoptions available for use in the differentapplications. They are located in wet roomssuch as bathrooms, WCs and kitchens.

Each extract provides a level of control thatis suitable for the room and activity at anytime. Each room has different requirementsfrom the ventilation system; Passiventprovides a truly adaptive solution for each.

For example, a WC is notpermanently occupied and sodoes not need such a highlevel of permanent extraction. However, once occupied aboost rate is required.

Plastic rigid and semi-rigid circular ductingPlastic rigid circular ducting can be used toconnect all parts of a Passivent care homesystem including air extract to fan and fan toroof terminals. Available with a number ofdifferent connection pieces to navigatedifferent project layouts. Insulation isavailable to prevent heat loss, condensationand provide resistance to fire. Semi-rigidcircular ducting is also available from the airextract to the fan for ease of installation.

Plastic rigid flat channel ductingPlastic rigid flat channel ducting is suitablefor extraction from wet rooms such asbathrooms and kitchens. Its low profileenables ducting to be concealed. The varioustypes of ducting available mean that it caneasily be incorporated into different types ofproject.

TERMINALS

Exhaust air terminalA tile terminal is designed to blend withmost available manufacturers’ roof tiles, andwill weather to match the surrounding tilesover time. It is AA fire rated to BS 476: Part 3.

Wall terminals are also available.

FRESH AIR SUPPLYWhen using Passivent iMEV care homesystems, fresh air vents must be provided toreplace the extracted air. Inlet vents areusually located within habitable rooms suchas bedrooms and living rooms.

Passivent have various inlet vent optionsavailable to provide sufficient levels ofbackground air but at the same time ensurethat residents’ comfort is maintained.

Window VentsWindow Vents are incorporated within thewindow or the frame. There are various typesavailable with different controls, frommanual cord operated units to fullyautomatic humidity sensitive versions.

The units are usually installed by the windowmanufacturer at the time of making the windows. Each is designed to ensure thatairflow is not directed into the centre of theroom which residents mainly occupy, but isdirected upwards, reducing the effect ofdraughts.

There are acoustic options including eithermanual or automatic control. These can givesound reduction of up to 42dB providing aquieter, peaceful living environment.

Wall VentsA range of through-wall vents can be usedwhere it is not possible or desirable to fit awindow vent or where a greater control offresh air supply is required.

Wall vents are infinitely adjustable betweenopen and closed, so allow close control ofhow much air is allowed in.

Humidity-sensitive options are availablewhere manual control is not required. Theacoustic range can provide substantial soundreduction of up to 55dB.
