Swiss Chinese Orchestra Night

It‟s such a pleasure to affirm the excellence and the Dare to Try of the Swiss Chinese Orchestra night on Fri 3 Feb 12! It was Dare to Try in the sense that many pieces were non-traditional; the themes were un-usual (a pirate flag? coordinated black-framed spectacles?) What was particularly notable was that Ms Lim Lay Har, our SH/MTL, drummed her heart out. The audience felt truly satisfied at the end of the evening, after several encores.

We are sure the sell-out crowd was an affirmation of the CO students‟ ability and hard work. It was truly inspiring and touching for many of them to hear from their teachers that they did a good job and were proud of them. Once again, BIG Thank you to all teachers and students for being a big part of the Swiss Orchestral Night.

WeComms Sec1 English Drama Enrichment

The English Department is pleased to announce that we have successfully completed the WeComm English Drama Enrichment 2012 course for our Sec1 cohort which lasted from February to April 2012. This year we have chosen to work with the professional agency, Drama’Arts. Having met the requirements, our Sec1 students have received certificates to acknowledge their completion of the workshop. Some of the students were even awarded certificates for the Best Actor, the Best Actress and the Best Groups for the respective sessions. The workshop has harnessed the potential of drama for personal expression. It has provided our Sec1 students with the experiences in which an individual‟s intellect, emotions, imagination and the body were involved and developed through expression, performance, observation and reflection. The experienced instructors of this programme have complemented the efforts of our Sec1 English teachers to improve the students‟ oral communication skills and self-confidence. At the end of their series of six workshop sessions, the students have all gathered to showcase their know-how and competence in performing the short literary play “Lord of the Flies” in LT1.

- Prepared by June Lim for the EL Department (May2012)

“I really admire how professional my instructor was in handling his students and giving us the feel of what being a real actor would be like and how much work it takes to become a convincing actor.

I remembered enjoying the acting during practice sessions… In fact, I think the biggest take-away from this programme for me was building my self-confidence. I have learned to face a crowd without fear. Through this programme I have actually managed to discover new things about myself. For example, I discovered at the end of the workshop that my fear of public speaking was gone. In addition, I have also taken a slight interest in drama, which I never had thought of before.

My friends and I learned that drama was not about the script but about bringing the script to life and expressing ourselves not only through words but through our tone of voice and body language. And that was really fun!”

CIP = Values in Action (VIA) and KidsREAD

On 25 May 2012, the Minister for Education, Mr Heng Swee Keat, announced the reframing of the Community Involvement Programme (CIP) as “” Values in Action” (VIA) to give greater focus to students acquiring values. With the renaming, Minister said that he would like to see young people reflecting on the values (eg, respect, care and responsibility) involved while engaging in community projects. He added: "It is not just talking about respect, care or responsibility. It is only through action that our students learn how those values are actualised, how those values are put into action." Speaking of actualising values, this is what our Swiss students have learnt in volunteering for *kidsREAD programme for the past year.

kidsREAD is a nationwide reading programme officially launched on 23 April 2004. It is a collaborative effort by the National Library Board (NLB) together with the People’s Association (PA) and five selfhelp groups to promote the love of reading and cultivate good reading habits among all young Singaporeans, in particular children from low-income families. The target audience of kidsREAD is children between the ages of 4 and 8, regardless of race or religion. Volunteers read aloud stories to children to inculcate good reading habits from young and help them discover the joy of reading. Training in basic storytelling skills and planning for a reading session as well as guidebooks to aid the volunteers in their role are provided. The main aim for volunteers is to get the children interested in reading, that it is fun and useful.

Jinger 4T1: I enjoy going for kidsREAD as I can be a

storyteller for once! I also enjoy playing games with

them.

Choon Zin 4E3: I think it was a different way of serving

CIP because we usually attend more to elderly. However I

do like this cip more as I like children and I find it happy

and heart warming to see kids smile when they liked what

they were doing. I did reading aloud once and found it

less stressful than reading in front of people of my age

or older. I believe this cip has brought me joy and made

me more caring and tolerant towards little children.

California 3N2: I feel that KidsRead is indeed a very

enjoyable session and every part of the session is very

memorable. The kids are very adorable and it is really

interesting to be able to read a book in front of the

younger ones. Also it helps us to be more confident.

Jia xin 3N2: I feel that after attending many sessions

of kidsREAD, I am able to interact well with the kids. I

have become more confident after reading stories to

them. I do enjoy doing activities with the children too.

It’s really a memorable and awesome programme!!

Esther 3N2: Personally, I feel this is a very meaningful

activity. I have become more confident and I really enjoy

interacting with all the kids!

Priya 3E1: I didn’t know interacting with kids could

be that fun! Whenever I walked out of that room,

knowing that the kids are happy because of our

presence I feel like I have accomplished something

great. No matter how tired I am, I will always make

an effort to attend KidsRead.

Sihui 3E1 : Personally I feel happy that being with

the kids make me happy, When I see the innocent

and pure smiles on their faces, I feel simple. Their

smiles take away some of my stress, even just for a

short while. Being with them is indeed an enjoyable

and pleasant memory.

Cassa 3E1: Personally I feel happy and glad that

at least I am able to help the kids and bring in a

little excitement and happiness into their lives. I

had fun interacting with kids of different

character. Not only did I see the smiles on their

faces, mine came naturally too. Although I will

feel tired after every kidsREAD session, I didn’t

regret joining kidsREAD :) I love the feeling of

knowing that the smiles on their faces are

because of me.

Marcus 3E1: I feel that I can actually bring fun,

joy and laughter to not only myself but those

children. This is indeed a nice experience.

Mark 3E1: During kidsREAD session, nothing

beats the smiles these children wear when we

read stories to them. Knowing that we are

nurturing young minds and at the same time,

enjoying it. KidsREAD is truly beneficial.

Jillian 3E3: kidsREAD was a really enjoyable

time for me as it was something to look

forward to at the end of the school week.

The kids were really cute and it gave all of

us opportunities to brush up our oral as well

as organization skills.

Sharon 3N1: After going for kidsREAD, I am able to

communicate with children better and sometimes, I

feel they are not the ones learning from us, instead

it’s us learning from them.

Vino 3E5: Being Part of this CIP is very satisfying.

Getting to know the kids and putting a smile to their

faces always brightens me up. To have instilled an

interest for reading in them is very heart satisfying.

Sim YuLing 3E5: I feel very happy when I see the

kids smile and I am glad that they are having a great

time with us.

Jonathan San 3E4: At first, I thought that it would

be tough to manage all kids at once, especially with

only a few volunteers in the group, but as we stayed

resilient and planned ahead for each session, we were

then able to bring smiles to their faces. And that’s

what counts! =D

Father@School 2nd Anniversary Celebrations Fathers@School celebrated its 2nd Anniversary on Saturday 21st April 2012, at Paya Lebar Methodist Girls Sch. Mr Amit, Mr Thiru & I from SCSS PSG attended for the event - Promoting Active Involvement, Impacting Children's Lives. About 250 participants for the event, well it‟s not about Father and why not mom; it‟s about Family. These events are open to mom. Since the Launch in November 20009, the movement has focused its effort on getting fathers to ACT – that is to be AWARE of the importance of their role as husbands and fathers, to COMMIT to their role, and spend TIME with their children, acquire Tools to be effective fathers, and bring Transformation to the lives of their family members as well as others. Guest of Honour - Mr Hawazi Daipi, presented certificates of appointment to the 1st batch of Fathers@School Ambassadors‟. He later shared a quote from one of the Primary School Principal as saying; “Because there is Dads for Life, there is Life for Mum”. There was a talk by Adrienne Burgess, Joint CEO of Fatherhood Institute, UK - raising future-ready children: The Difference a Dad Makes. The speech pointed out that a fathers‟ greater involvement in routine childcare is associated with children‟s higher school grades (Hoffma & Youngblade, 1999). Sometimes it‟s not about doing special things but it‟s about doing our daily routine; like walking kids to school. Included was also a launch and screening of The Little Star, a 20 minutes short film by Jack Neo. The film was about, how far one would you go to accept and love a child who may be difficult to love? This is a heartwarming tale of a father‟s struggle to provide for his “problem” son single-handedly. From a heart that is turned away from, and against, his own son, a father experiences a „change of heart‟ after a chance encounter with a young gangster. He begins to relate with his son differently by entering his world. To his amazement, he discovers a son he never knew, and the joy and fulfillment of Fatherhood… Through the video presentation, a girl from St Hilda Sec School shared how her father has to spend a lot of time with her family since she lost her mom at a very young age. Her wish though, maybe her father to spend time with friends. There is an interesting quote that says," A truly rich man is one whose children run into his arms when his hands are empty." This quote resonates with all of us involved in the Dads for Life movement. It speaks of the relational purity and simplicity that we hope in all father-child relationships. We want all fathers to have a great influence in their children‟s lives... for life - Mr Richard Seow, Chairman Fathers Action Network.

Four Girls with BIG Hearts Swiss being a school, which gives commendation and

recognition to student who excels in studies, co-curricular

activities and conduct, we also recognise students with

outstanding participation and contribution in community

project.

Team GAIA was a true example of Swiss students who went beyond the call of duty to serve and give back to the community. This team of 4 girls who were inspired by their seniors’ previous Citi-YMCA Youth For Causes project to raise funds and awareness of the Singapore Environment Council. The team sold Garbage Enzymes (a chemical-free dishwashing liquid) and stationery at markets and street sales.

The Team won the Best Volunteer Management Award after 6 months of toil and sweat. The panel of judges were impressed with their retention and recognition of volunteers as well as the methods they used to motivate them. GAIA motivated the volunteers by giving talks and candies. The team also held an awards ceremony where the volunteers were given awards like Most Hardworking Volunteer, Most Eloquent Volunteer and Most Selfless Volunteer, to appreciate the hard work their volunteers put in. Team GAIA had inspired more than 120 volunteers and reached out to an estimated 10,000 members of the public. They also raised $6,091.85 for their cause.

These 4 girls were given a cash prize of $1000 by Citibank. Instead of spending the money on themselves, these big-hearted and gracious girls shared their gift by giving the volunteers a treat at the Swensen’s and the remaining money was donated to Special Olympics Singapore (SOS) in June 2012.

This is an extract of the email from SOS: Greetings from Special Olympics Singapore! I have received the donation of $780 in cash, on behalf of my organization, with thanks and gratitude, from your 4 students: Ms Shea Ang, Ms Claudia Ng, Ms Zhang Hao Ran and Ms Wendy Liu. Please send our regards and appreciation to the 4 of them for their generosity to donate their prize money to us.

Let us continue to embrace the spirit of giving and strive to make a difference each day!

Fathers’ & Grandparents’ Day @

HKNDCC* Elderly of HKNDCC celebrated Fathers’ & Grandparents’ Day on 18th

June 2012. Students of the Chinese Orchestra and Malay Dance Club

had the opportunity to perform and interact with the elderly during the

lunch session. It is greatly commendable that these students took the

initiative to meet on their own and practiced for extra hours. The elderly

had enjoyed the two performances which were put forth with love and

sincerity.

Swiss Flames to Hangzhou Our Mission

To enhance badminton skills of students through training with students from China

To experience overseas values in action (VIA) program and learn how to care for others

To expose students to a different culture and lifestyle in Hangzhou

During the June holidays, 3-9 June, 19 Swiss Flamers together with 2 teachers embarked on a journey to Hangzhou in China. This 7D6N trip was indeed an awesome experience for all. The Sec 3 Flamers were appointed to be the leaders of our VIA programme. The Sec 3 student leaders met regularly to brainstorm, discuss and prepare materials to teach simple English words to the local students through games and English songs. All of us, including teachers, had a lot of fun, laughter and joy on our OVIA day at a village primary school – Hope Project School in Lingan where we delivered our VIA project. In addition, we visited places such as the Qinghefang Street, Dragon Well Plantation, West Lake and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower at Shanghai. Through all the interaction, students were given the opportunity to understand the China culture better. Some students’ reflections were: Esther Sim (1E4) 1) Teamwork!! I learnt that we have to work together for a successful project. Teaching little children is not easy at all. 2) When playing badminton, no matter who the opponent is, we should always play our best. 3) The most enjoyable and memorable experience is our VIA day. It is awesome! I am impressed that the Primary 3 students are so talented and can do so much. Ng Ming Jia Janelle (2E2) 1) I learnt how to work faster and spent my training time wisely instead of slacking and not practising. Practice makes perfect! Continue to practice to perfect my badminton strokes. I learnt many strokes that I can improve on, like how to net the shuttle in many ways and most important is to lob the shuttle to the baseline. 2) I should improve in my Mandarin to communicate in Chinese language more effectively. We should also have faith and believe that we can make our VIA programme successful in which we did! Aleena Ting Qing Yi (3N1) 1) I learnt how to net the shuttle and make it spin when it crosses the net. Although it is not easy and I failed a few times, I managed to learn how to “perfect” the stroke”. 2) I learnt that in lobbing, smashing and dropping the ball, our hand should be straight and bring it all the way down. 3) Most importantly, I learnt that it is not about winning the game every time but to learn and find out our own mistakes and weaknesses when we lose the game. 4) I enjoyed the VIA programme a lot and the children were very happy with the programme we planned for them. The teachers-in-charge were Mr Gan Chin Kai, Miss Ng Poh Keow and Mdm Ong Siew Khim.

Happy 47th

Birthday Singapore Swiss Cottage' whole-school tribute to Singapore was carried out by staff and students forming the Singapore flag, with the Chinese character for people ('ren2') on top. The two lines of Uniformed Groups (UG) students extending outwards, at top left and top right, and also a line extending upwards from the centre represented 'Loving

Spore, Our Home'. Swiss students took great pride in taking part in our National Day parade celebrations. They practised their drills and movements rigorously for many weeks. To all 6 UG groups – NPCC (Guard of Honour contingent), BB, Girl Guides, NCC, Scouts and SJAB, – good job on perfecting your drills. We are thankful to everyone for a meaningful and memorable National Day celebration as we worked together as a family and making the Swiss Home an even closer and warmer one despite the HFMD. Indeed being as ONE, we can OVERCOME. Many thanks to Mdm Serene Tang and the Citizenship Committee for organising the celebrations.

After the national anthem and pledge-taking, the celebrations continued and it was really one of the most memorable and fun days for our Swiss teachers. The theme “Happy OURS” was adopted. The Staff Welfare Committee held a Teachers’ Day Lunch in LT3 where Departments put up many talented and inspiring items. Quotes from teachers:

- A big thanks to SWC for all your hard work in putting together a warm and cosy Lunch session for us. I really felt at home, so at ease!

- I have enjoyed all performances too, some were simply hilarious...and I know I will remember this Teachers' Day Lunch for quite a while.

- I have enjoyed myself performing with the SAMBA brothers and sisters, I bet you had a great day too!

- Thank you SWC once again, your little gesture of ensuring that each of us walk away with a gift voucher is very much appreciated too. Teachers’ Day was co-organised by Mr Timothy Tan, Ms Zoe Pow, Ms Xi Ning and Mr Daniel and the Staff welfare Committee.

Night Study 2012 - Collaboration Between Swiss Alumni and Parents Support Group (PSG)

This is the 3rd year that we are organising the Food Nights, short for "Food-Exam-Nights". Thankfully, it does get easier with practice. We have a strong, vibrant support from parents of students from all levels in the school, as well as funding & manpower support from the Parents-Support-Group. We also have teachers and staff who went beyond their call of duty and stayed back late. Our heartfelt appreciation and “Thank You” to all those who contributed their time and effort. The initial idea behind Food Nights is to fill the stomachs of graduating students who are studying late in school. It serves to save their precious time and motivate them by providing warm and nutritious dinner each night, for 3 weeks, before their final exams. We hope that these students may experience the spirit of giving, and pass it on as they grow up into thoughtful leaders in the future. In the past months, there has been an increase in the alumni getting reconnected with the school and coming forward to pledge donations. Moving on, we hope to have more members of the alumni returning to participate in the monthly alumni meeting, so that we can have fresh and interesting new ideas to contribute back to the School.” Written by Ms Ruyan Lee, Class of 1996

It’s been 2 years that PSG has helped to support SCSS, Alumni in the food night. Parents volunteer every night to serve the food to the students while they prepare for their night study. It’s been a great pleasure for PSG to have been part of this food night. It is definitely a joyful moment to see the students appreciate the food and it in turn gives them extra time to concentrate on their studies instead of rushing out to nearby food court to buy their food. The parents support also makes it a special moment for the students as it forms a bonding and gives parents a sense of well being to see their kids putting in the hard work to prepare for the big day. Some parents also sponsor additional items, other than funds like fruits and vitamin drinks which the students appreciate. Hope the students appreciate these precious moments and grow to become good citizens and loving leaders of the future to learn the need to what it means to give a little back to society after their graduation. A special salute to all the Alumina members, teachers, school administrators, all parents who helped make this a memorable event. I wish the students all the best for the upcoming exams which makes their parents proud. “The question is not about the volume of what you do; the willingness with which you breathe, and walk and live, that makes you a volunteer.” – Sadhguru Written by Mdm Tamin, PSG Vice Chairman
