President’s Message 3

My husbandhas a tickeron the desk-top of hisMac thatc o u n t sdown on adaily basis

and tonight reads, "End of the JLBRPresidency: 335 days." Nice. I guess Ican't totally blame him; June has been arather meeting-heavy month. But despitethe pace, the schedule, and the incredi-ble responsibility this position demands ofits holder, I really don't want to wish thisyear away.

It is hard not to live for the future and wishtime away – whether to put a hard spellbehind you or out of pure excitement forsomething wonderful ahead. I often fightfalling into this trap. This spring, underthe pressure of writing my May dinnermeeting speech and planning the boardretreat, I dreamed of how I would feel onthe afternoon on May 17th when bothwere over. Tonight, as I write this, I cannotwait to spend a month in Bethany Beach,Delaware, my favorite place to spendtime with my family and enjoy a littlepeace, rest and relaxation.

However, I learned from this busy pastmonth that there is much to be gained byslowing down and consciously striving totake it all in. Every June the incomingpresident meets with each committeechair to discuss the vision for the commit-tee and talk strategically about how thatvision fits into the board's big picturethinking. It would be easy to becomeoverwhelmed by the sheer number ofmeetings required in this endeavor

(hence the appearance of Kevin's person-al countdown clock).

But any desire I might have had to fastforward to a day or week less demandingwas completely stifled by the energy, enthusiasm and ideas our incomingleaders brought to the boardroom table, one after the next. If I had let myself getcaught up wishing the busyness away, Imight not have realized how much I stillcould learn about our League, its activi-ties and our members. I might not haveenjoyed the conversations so much ornoticed how much thought and prepara-tion the chairs put into their planning. Imay not have headed off to Delaware sothrilled about the League's leaders andour collective plans for next year.

So enough wishing time away. Thanks toa new found love of country music, KennyChesney reminds me, "Life goes faster thanyou think. So don't blink." So my person-al goal for the year ahead is to live in andenjoy the moment . . . to slow down … tostop and smell the roses (or in my case thegardenias, because they grow in my backyard and I think they smell better). It's theperfect time to do this. Today is June 30th,which means 2008 is officially half over.So let's call it my half-year's resolution.

I hope you all have a chance to slowdown this summer and to appreciate thethings that can become overlooked whentime starts to fly. Think about carrying thelaid-back spirit of summer into theLeague as we start up again in Augustand fight to hold onto it as momentumbuilds throughout the year. This year willgo faster than we all think, so help meremember: Don't blink!

Don’t Blink by Kristen Ross

Thinking back tomy childhood, sum-mer meant the endof the school yearand nothing but funand relaxing forthree long months.Granted, by Sep-tember I was so

excited for school to start, I could bare-ly stand it. I vividly remember shoppingfor my school uniform, trying it on sev-eral times once I got it home, and lay-ing it out on my bed the night beforeschool started eagerly anticipating theapproaching first day of school. Thenight before the first day was an earlydinner, shower and then right to bed. Iwoke the next morning before my mom,got dressed and waited for breakfast. To me, the JLBR is very similar.Although you love your placement, bythe time May comes around you'reready for summer. Ready to sit backand say – I am so proud of all that weaccomplished this year, but I need torelax for a while. Whether you workedhard on a community project, fundrais-er, or inter-league committee, you areready for a break. BUT, by the timeAugust rolls around you are chompingat the bit for your new committee place-ment to get into action. You've hadenough! Who needs to sleep until 8:00a.m. every morning, who needs to readthe endless trashy novels, who needs tosip Mojitos by the pool? Time foraction – you are ready to make sureyour second Tuesday of the month isfree so that you can attend the JLBRGeneral Membership meeting. You areready to attend your first committee

meeting and determine what your spe-cific role will be within that committee. You are ready to walk up to that JLBRmember that you've never met andintroduce yourself. The beginning of anew League year is much like the firstday of school - there will be new faces, new projects and new achievements.Take these relaxing summer monthsand reflect on how you want yourLeague year to play out. Get excitedabout the coming year and the newchallenges you will face.

Time to start planning now – recruit yourfriends to join the JLBR – it's not too late to signup for a Candidate Education Session (CES)to join the 2008-2009 new member class.Be sure to Save the Date for the WVOYLuncheon scheduled for November 20th –start getting a table together – it's never tooearly! Sustainers – the Fall Luncheon isOctober 19th. Be sure to attend!

I hope you will all be as excited as I amabout the changes that are happeningwith The Bridge. This year, we will pub-lish six issues of The Bridge instead ofnine as we have done in the past. Ourgoal is to provide you with all of theimportant "In-House" information, butto also provide you with informationyou can implement in your day-to-daylives. Enjoy the rest of your summerand we will see you in September!

21st Woman Volunteer Plans Underway! by Kristin Calder

Plans are underwayfor the 21st AnnualWoman Volunteer ofthe Year (WVOY)Luncheon Thursday,November 20, 2008at the Boca RatonResort & Club.

November seems a long time from now,but I can assure you the Woman Volunteerof the Year excitement is already building. Our May dinner and Annual Meetingincluded the announcements of LucyCraske Long as the 2008 WVOYHonorary Chair and Carolyn Arnold asthe 2008 JLBR nominee for the event.

We are thrilled that WoolbrightDevelopment, Inc., has committed to gen-erously support the event again as a pri-mary sponsor and announced for the sec-ond year they will give a $10,000 prize tothe nonprofit organization that the WomanVolunteer of the Year award recipient rep-resents.

Wachovia Wealth Management, also amajor sponsor, is overseeing the nomina-tion process. Applications have been sentto area nonprofitsand were due backto Wachovia by July10th.

This event is a shin-ing example of howwe promote our mis-sion. We raise sig-nificant funding tosupport our commu-nity projects whilepromoting outstand-

ing voluntarism. And no doubt, it is also ahuge training opportunity for all involved!

Each year the event grows in various andsurprising ways and it's no wonder it is themust-attend event of the season. Thecommittee has some fabulous new ideasthat you'll want to be a part of and for thesecond year we'll feature the ChandelierTable in which you can purchase a chanceto be upgraded from your table to an evenmore extraordinary table and experience.

How can you get involved? Supporting theevent with your $100 financial commit-ment provides an easy opportunity to fulfillyour requirement early for the 2008-2009League year. Your support through yourfinancial commitment is important to thesuccess of the event – and it's great to haveour members listed in the event programreflecting this type of support.

Thanks to assistant chairs Kelly Clark,Jennie DeWolff, Kathy Potts and SchuylerThompson and committee members andsustainers who've already pledged tomake this an incredible year for WVOY!

Stay tuned for more details about the eventand early fundraising shifts.

now. She cannotstress enough theneed, not only for foodbut also for volunteers. There are all kinds ofeasy chores that onlytake an hour a week.

During the summer, there are nosnowbirds to help, so new helpers aredesperately needed. Meals are dis-tributed from 11:30 to 12:30 mostdays. Help is also needed to packbags of food, deliver hot meals, etc. Ifyou have some time this summer, thencall Linda Gove at 561-417-5343.Because of our current economy, food,or the money to buy it, is desperatelyneeded.
