The Passion Meter ~ Pattern FindingThe Passion Meter is a tool to obtain insights so we can create our passion statement ~ what we love doing which brings value to others. It is an exercise in awareness, reflection and pattern finding.

How it Works ~ An Overview

Follow steps 1 – 10 on the next pages. In brief, you will be writing down the actions you loved doing or did not love doing over the course of several years or over your lifetime. Then, you’ll find the patterns in what you loved or did not love doing. Sometimes insights will occur by looking at what you do not love doing as much as what you did love doing.

The bottom axis is your age, start from your earliest childhood memories or whenever you wish.

The left axis range is from +10 to -10 based on how much you loved doing something or how much you did not love doing something.

DIDNOTLOVE

Create your own definitions for these levels ~ what does +8 mean to you, how does that differ from a +10, what does -8 mean to you and how does that differ from a -10. What matters is that you are consistent throughout the exercise.

Please DO NOT start looking for the patterns until you are finished with steps 1 – 10 on the following pages. Also, please DO NOT think about the relevancy ~ just put as much down on paper as you can remember in order to get the most accurate results and therefore the most relevant insights into your passions and purpose.

Steps 1,2 & 3 ~ getting it downSTEP ONE – PRINT PAGE 4Print out page 4, the next page, ‘The Passion Meter’. Please do not print all of these pages, (in total you will only need pgs 4, 8 & 11 printed.)

STEP TWO – WHAT TO DOThe first time doing this activity, place a dot around the right age (based on the age range you set) and at the scale in which you loved or did not love doing the action. Next to the dot write the general name of the activity, such as music, art, swimming, sales, etc.

Write down as many as possible without thinking about the results.

For example (image on left), our friend Dana’s most fondest memory as a child was playing in the mud yet she really does not like making oil paintings though she loves art in general. Do not worry about what may appear to be contradictions.

STEP THREE – KEEP ‘THE PASSION METER’ WITH YOUKeep this page with you for a period of time, at least one week. When an insight comes to you as actions in your past which you loved doing or did not love doing, write it down.

Step 4 ~ getting more specificOnce you complete Step Three:

STEP FOUR – LOOK AT EACH ACTION AGAIN

In looking at each of your actions again, reflect on the specific action you loved doing or did not love doing within that specific realm.

For example on left, Dana loves music and starting loving music at an early age, around 12.

What she loved the most, and still does, is to create compilations , a mix, of her friend’s favorite songs. Her friends would tell her what they liked and she put them together specifically for her and her friends to listen to when they get together.

This action is very different than her friend Scott who was always finding great new bands and her friend Susannah who really got into the lyrics and loved writing lyrics. They all love music however the specific actions they love, within the realm of music, is very different.

Step 5 ~ getting organizedSTEP FIVE – NUMBER EACH ACTION

Place numbers next to each of your actions. I have found it works better to number your actions starting from when you were the youngest to the present day. This will help you keep your mind progressing naturally over time instead of skipping around.

~ giving yourself more room to get more specific

STEP SIX – CREATE A NEW PAGE

Create your own page or print out the next page, page 8, which is similar to the image on the top left.

The more complete example of Dana’s Worksheet on the lower left is on Pg 9.

STEP SEVEN – GET MORE SPECIFIC

As you can see there are 5 columns.

Column One: the number reference you placed next to each action in the previous step (on Your Passion Meter).

Column Two: the approximate level of passion/love you feel towards that action, from -10 to +10.

Column Three: this is the desciption you’ve already placed on the Passion Meter during the previous steps.

Column Four: This anwers the questions of ‘why’ you loved or did not love the action. Be as specific as possible.

Column Five: simplify your ‘why’ to a few words (as few as possible). Use words that have the most meaning for you.

Step 8 ~ Pattern Finding 101STEP EIGHT – PATTERN FINDER PAGE

PRINT OUT THE NEXT PAGE , the Pattern Finder Page, or on another sheet of paper create a similar page with 4 columns and at least 10 rows.

For this next step you will need to look at The Passion Meter Worksheet (what you did in the last step). Circle the words which answer the three questions on the lower right.

Sometimes the answers are right in front of you or at least the words you are looking for are similar. Be reflective and identify words which have meaning for you.

Again, do not look or think about the outcome of your passions or purpose in life when looking for patterns, Just jot them down.

You will be jotting the words/answers down on the worksheet on the next page. It is not important to write down the number reference from the previous worksheet.

2. What are the OUTCOMES, VALUE or BENEFIT that occur s for something or someone else as a result of the actions.

3. For WHOM or WHAT are these actions intended (specific person, group, anyone, everyone)?

THREE QUESTIONS- the ANSWERS are already on YOUR PASSION METER WORKSHEETCircle the words on your Passion Meter Worksheet which answer the following questions (example above). List the words in the appropriate columns on your Pattern Finder Page. To make it easier to see the answers, use different colors to circle the words for the different questions below.

Step 9 ~ pattern finding: looking for inconsistencies and insights

STEP NINE – INCONSISTENCIES & INSIGHTSOn your Pattern Finder Page place the heading: consistencies and insights & inconsistencies and insights’ on top of the 4th column.

What stands out to you as consistencies? Ask yourself why. Inconsistencies? Ask yourself why.

In looking at the list of words in the frist three columns, what insights do you have about the patterns you are now seeing? Dig deep within yourself (and perhaps within a Thesaursus) to find the right words which have the most meaning for you.

Write down as many new words in column 4 as possible which reflect the patterns in columns 1-3.

Look for words which have the most meaning for you. Write these down for each of the three areas: Actions, Outcomes/Value and For Whom or What

When ask ed why, she thought it was due to a problem within her.

However, she likes reusing materials such as a painting a used table. She does not like starting from nothing, a blank canvas.

Step 10 ~ creating your Passion Statement

STEP TEN – PUTTING IT INTO A SENTENCEThis step can be a bit tricky as the sentence needs to be grammatically correct.

Remember, the purpose of this activity is to obtain insights so you can create your passion statement:

What we love doing which brings value to other people or other things.

Once you have a sentence that moves you – start using it. Place it on the top of your resume (preferably your 3D Resume), place it on your online profiles such as Linkedin, Facebook, etc. ~ do whatever you can to communicate it to others.

It is through this communication to others as well as keeping it top of mind for yourself, that you will continually be in the Flow of O, the flow of opportunities which align with your passion ~ opportunities which you will find passion, purpose, meaning and success.

DANA’S PASSION STATEMENTMy purpose is to revitalize people and things in order to turn on their potential.

what you love doing

for whom / what

what value / benefit

My Passion is to…

Page 19: Passion Meter

19

My purpose is to be a bridge between people, ideas and opportunities.

To bring new products to life.

To create experiences to increase aliveness utilizing the five senses, especially smell.

To bring to the world an increase in respect and effective uses of our most precious resources: people, time and materials.

To unite teams around shared insights, goals & meaning in order to more fully realize their vision. To engage and lead

others towards optimizing their lives in order to increase positive outcomes.

Examples of Passion Statements

To inspire, connect and enable innovative leaders to create a dynamic and resilient global community.
