Renewable Products

“Our strategic goal is to grow in the global market based on renewable raw materials.”

Offers renewable diesel, renewable jet fuel and related solutions, renewable solvents, as well as raw materials for bioplastics. Neste’s renewable traffic fuels help combat climate change. Our renewable hydrocarbons help replace crude oil based materials in the chemical industry’s applications, such as in the production of renewable solvents and bio-based plastics.

Our Marketing & Services business area is a significant marketer and seller for the company’s extensive range of services and high-quality products in Finland, in North-west Russia, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. In addition to consumers, the company serves retailers, heating oil customers, fleet customers, industry, and agriculture.

times greater than the emissions from Neste’s refineries and logistics

Neste MY Renewable Diesel is a drop-in solution for all diesel-powered passenger cars and heavy transport. When produced from waste and residues, it enables 90% smaller greenhouse gas emissions on the average compared to conventional diesel.

City fleets such as in San Diego in the US and Porvoo in Finland use Neste MY Renewable Diesel. Its use can also reduce local emissions, such as fine particulates and nitrogen oxides, which helps improve air quality in urban areas.

Neste has developed from an oil refiner into the world’s leading company to produce a wide variety of renewables primarily from waste and residues.

Fat-containing wastes and residues account for nearly 80% of our renewable raw material usage. This makes us an industry leader in circular economy and makes sense from climate perspective: Neste MY Renewable Diesel produced from waste and residues has 90% lower greenhouse gas emissions on the average than conventional diesel from crude oil.

Neste accelerating circular economy

We are increasingly contributing to circular economy in the production of our renewable products. By using waste and residues as raw materials, we extend the life cycle of these materials or give them new life cycles. When products based on renewable raw materials reach the end of their life cycle, the carbon they contain does not increase carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere, which is the case with products based on fossil materials.

R&D efforts on waste and residue raw materials

The availability of currently used waste and residues are limited. Although our portfolio already consists of over 10 different raw materials, we invest in research on renewable raw materials to find new lower-grade waste and residue raw materials that have no other significant uses.

Residues from the forest industry, algae, and plastic waste are among the most interesting alternatives for future raw materials.

Our research on plastic waste is focused on how to introduce it as a raw material in oil refining processes. Plastic packaging materials, for example, could be recycled instead of burned in waste incinerators. They could help replace crude oil in the refining of conventional oil products.

Research on plastic waste supports Neste’s aims to reduce crude oil dependency and climate emissions globally. It also strengthens Neste’s role in circular economy.

A considerable portion of our R&D efforts

focuses on future raw materials. Around 1,000 specialists work in R&D

and technology at Neste, and our annual

expenditure totals over EUR 40 million.
