Lovells havegained reputation as being at the forefront of springdesign and manufacturing techniques as well as highquality suspension components by committing to thefinest quality materials, skilled staff, computer springdesign and test equipment, PLC (programmable logiccontrolled) manufacturing equipment and extensiveroad and race tested products to ensure “THE RIDE OFYOUR LIFE”.

Why Springs Are ReplacedTo achieve improvements in the following areas:

Ride HeightTo restore the vehicle to its original standard rideheight, when the original springs have sagged orweakened.

To lower the centre of gravity of the vehicle forenhanced appearance, performance and handlingcharacteristics.

To raise the vehicle for increased ground clearance andload carrying capabilities eg. towing, LPG, loadbearing accessories.

HandlingLovells Springs ratings exceed that of originalequipment springs by around 10%-50%, thereforehandling is dramatically improved by controllingexcessive body roll and brake dive.

Load CarryingLovells offer a vast range of heavy duty uprated coil &leaf springs to increase the vehicle’s load carryingcapabilites and maintain stability when laden.These springs should be selected where a vehiclecarries heavy loads, is used for towing, is fitted withLPG or larger fuel tank and other load bearingaccessories i.e. bull bar, winch etc.

ComfortLovells Springs offer a vast range of variances inprogressive and linear rate spring design, ratings andride height options to enable the vehicle to beenhanced to the customers exacting comfortrequirements.

Spring ManufactureCoil SpringsLovells Coil Springs are designed as a superiorreplacement part for mass produced O.E. (OriginalEquipment) coil springs. Lovells springs are designed on advanced computeraided design programs and sophisticated inhouse testmachines, before extensive road testing andperformance checks to ensure the ultimateperformance of the product.Lovells Springs are manufactured in accordance withISO9002 to the highest standards in our own modernmanufacturing facilities. All Lovells Springs aremanufactured to exceed the appropriate AustralianStandards using Australian made Onesteel (previouslyBHP) micro alloy spring steels supplied to AS1447-1991. All heating and tempering furnaces areelectronically controlled to precise temperatures andeach spring is formed on PLC machines.

All coil springs are shot peened to eliminate materialsurface defects and are powder coated with LovellsBlaze Blue © before being final inspected, labelled andpackaged in a protective display box.

Lovells coil springs areavailable in linear rate (Fig A.)or variable rate (Fig B.) designdepending on the application.

Spring Manufacture (Continued)Variable Rate Coil SpringsThe principle of variable rate coil springs is as follows:Spring rates increase when you need it (i.e. corneringand load carrying) and decrease when you don’t (i.e.normal comfort driving).

Previously when lowering a vehicle with linear ratecoils, spring capture (or entrapment) was a concern.

This problem has in most cases been eliminated withLLoovveellllss vvaarriiaabbllee rraattee ccooiill sspprriinnggss that will givesubstantial spring rate increase as well as substantialride height decrease.

The simple rule is “less coils in a spring, the higher thespring rate”. As the spring compresses under load thegathered coils come into contact and become inactivethus increasing the spring rate.

Note: Variable rate coil springs are not necessary for allvehicles and are only to be used in vehiclesrecommended by Lovells.

Leaf Springs (Laminated Springs)As per Lovells coil springs, leaf springs are designed asa superior replacement part for mass produced O.E.(Original Equipment) leafsprings.Practically all leaf springsused on cars, 4x4’s andtrucks are of the semielliptic type. The semielliptic spring has function of not only a spring, it candampen vertical deflection, supports the vehicle,positions the axle and cushions both driving torqueand brake reaction.

Lovells leaf springs are again manufactured usingpremium quality OneSteel micro alloy steel.

Leaf springs are cambered on specially designedmachines before being assembled, rate tested andinspected. All leaf springs are enamel dipped in LovellsNavy Blue ready for despatch.

Ride Height OptionsVehicle ride heights (Eye Brow Heights) are measuredvertically from the centre of the wheel hub to the edgeof the guard.

Vehicle ride heights are approximate only and can varydepending on:

Age of vehicleOptional extras (i.e. FE2 police pack, Sports Pack etc.)Load Bearing Accessories

When selecting springs all of the these factors must betaken into consideration.Important: Super low coil springs are designed forcosmetic enhancement only. Ensure sufficient bumpstop clearance is maintained. Check Applicable StateRegulations for further information.

Customer Specific Design andSpring Identification

If the springs you require are not listed in thecatalogue, please make enquiries with our customerservice technicians who will arrange for themanufacture of custom springs to your specificationand / or sample.

To achieve initial designparameters we willrequire the following:

Static (working) height:The length of the coilspring whilst still mountedin the vehicle under normalload.

Trapped height: The overall length of a coil springwhen still in the vehicle while the body of the vehicle isjacked up, to full extension of shock absorber.

Free height: The overalllength of a coil spring atits longest part whilenot under load i.e. outof the vehicle.

Total coils: Total number ofcomplete turns = 5.0 turns.(in this example)

Diameter of material: Use Vernier caliper to measure.Check at various points along coil and then check endcoils as the diameter may vary.

Inside diameter (I.D): UseVernier caliper to measureinside diameter of coilspring at both ends.Measure coil spring whilstout of vehicle.

Spring end finish:Normal: Unground, straight cut.

Ground: Ground flat

Reduced: End coil finishes smaller in diameter thanmain coils.

Fitting Guide1. With vehicle on level (flat) ground, measure andrecord corner heights (E.B.H) from centre of rim towheel arch.2. With vehicle on flat ground measure and recordstatic (working) height of O.E.M.(original) coils.(lengthof coil under load).3. Lift vehicle and record trapped height of coilsprings from front and rear. (wheels at full droop withsprings and shocks still in vehicle).4. Check inside diameter, top and bottom, of springagainst O.E.M.(original) coils5. Remove old suspension in accordance withvehicle manufacturers manual.6. Reassemble new suspension components and fitto vehicleNote: Final tensioning of all bolts & nuts to be donewith suspension at normal ride height. Failure toobserve this requirement may void any warranty.7. Align vehicle to manufacturers specifications.Place vehicle on level ground and record final cornerheights (E.B.H) from centre of rim to wheel arch.

Important: U-bolts must be checkedregularly & retensioned.For Maximum leaf spring life, after fitment of new leafsprings, U-bolts must be retensioned after 500km withvehicle fully laden. Lovells recommend all U-bolts to be checked regularly& retensioned if required. Torque settings are availableupon request.

Suspension Modification RegulationsThis information has been extracted from the RTACode of Practice for Light Vehicle Modifications. LovellsCopy No. 753 - issued 1996.

ADR Regulations:2.4.1. Precedence of ADR’s and manufacturers’

guidelinesIt is important to note that the requirements of theADRs and the original manufacturers’ modificationguidelines take precedence over the Code of Practice.Persons modifying or certifying modifications to lightvehicles must ensure that any relevant manufacturers’recommendations are complied with and that no ADRcompliance is invalidated, even as an unintended resultof complying with the Code of Practice.

Vehicles built/manufactured between 1934 -31/12/1960 are not covered by regulation.

Vehicles built after 1/1/1961 - to the introductionof ADR 13. ADR 13 was Introduced 1973 and wasenforced until 9/1991.

3.5.2 Certification of suspension modificationsCertification of suspension modifications shall betreated as follows:Minor modifications can be treated as ownercertified. These are modifications which do not affectthe basic geometry or load carrying members of thesuspension.

Examples are:- additional or uprated anti roll bars;- uprated shock absorbers and / or springs;- altered vehicle ride height by no more than one third

of the manufacturer’s suspension travel in thedirection of the ride height change; fitting of suspension assemblies which were options from the original manufacturer for the particular make / model.

Major modifications are to be certified by anengineering signatory. These are modifications tosuspension components, systems or installations whichaffect the major load carrying components of thesuspension and which were not options available fromthe original manufacturer for the particular make /model.

Examples are:- replacement of the original suspension (front or

rear) with a system of a different design eg: from another model vehicle.

- changes to suspension components such as changingthe front cross member to accommodate an engine change;substantially altering the mass of the vehicle.

3.5.3 Australian Design RulesWhile no ADR is involved directly with suspensionsystems, the following are examples of ADRs whichmay be affected indirectly by a suspensionmodification:ADR7/- Brake hosesADR13/- Installation of lighting devices - eg: heightADR14 - Rear vision mirrors - eg: attitude changeADR31 - Brake systems - eg: partial failureADR43 - Vehicle configuration and dimensions

6.4 ‘Ground Clearance’.The ground clearance of a vehicle, measured from a horizontal road surface to any point on the underside of the vehicle except the tyres, wheels & wheel hubs must, under the condition of ‘Maximum LoadTest Mass’ loading as specified in the relevant braking rule, be not less than..

6.4.1 for any point in the width of the vehicle which is within one meter fore and aft of any ‘Axle’, 100mm.

ADR61- Vehicle marking (license plate heights)61.6.1.1 Registration Plates. Provision shall be

made for mounting a registration plate to be affixed to the rear of the vehicle so that no part of such plate will be more than 1300mm from the ground.

ADR62- Mechanical connections between vehicles5.2.3.2 Vehicles fitted with a 50mm ‘Ball coupling’

Towbar, the height to centre of the ball determined in the laden condition must be between 350-420mm.

3.5.4.11 Changes to ride height are limited to one third of the working travel of the suspension from kerb mass height to metal to metal bump or rebound positions as specified by the manufacturer

Such modifications must comply with the following:- altered spring free lengths are acceptable providing

the spring seat load is maintained at full rebound and material stresses are not exceeded;the use of extended spring shackle plates is not permitted.

3.5.4.11 Such modifications must comply with thefollowing (Cont):- the suspension ride height of a coil spring shall not

be lowered by cutting off a section of the spring coils. New coil springs with increased spring rate specifications to provide for the reduced travel of the suspension shall be fitted.

3.5.6 Road testingThe completed vehicle must be evaluated under arange of road operating conditions to establish thatride, handling and steering characteristics areappropriate for the vehicle character and proposedtype of operation. While some of these aspects aresubjective, the vehicle must not behave in anunpredictable manner under any circumstances and itsgeneral behaviour must not be significantly differentfrom the majority of vehicles available at the time ofroad test. The vehicle must be suitable for subsequentsale to persons of average driving ability.
