< KEYWORDS>proyecto educativo, juego, experimentación, sociedad del futuro, desarrollo sostenible / educational project, play, experimentation, future´s society, sustainable development

Chiquitectos is above all an educational project, an enterprise that aims to involve children with the world surrounding them and awake their interest on their built ambiance and the sustainable development.

ACCIONES (juegos)

CHIQUITECTOS (WORD COMPOUND WITH “CHIQUI” (LITTLE, TINY) + “ARQUI-TECTOS (ARCHI-TECTS)”)NEW LEARNING WAYS TO FUTURE’S SOCIETY

The chiquitectos are a group of inhabitants under the age of 12, who share a common space/time diving into the built architectural interior space and the urban exterior space. They question everything that surrounds them, discovering invisible variables to the grown-ups and projecting alterations, almost on the brink of the abyss, because all is fair in game. The game, one more expression about the human existence from the anthropological[1] point of view, is embraced as the one and only strategy to explore and learn in our workshops; through the game, children enjoy the manipulated environment, intensive and consciously.

Chiquitectos is a playful but educational motion originated around the architecture for the future’s society. It is as well an ethical project, where architecture and ideology get each other involved. We play as we live, we live as we play [2]. Although the main objective is to have fun [3], within the very development of the action we are stating our life habits, setting up that way our means to interact with the world[4]. We work on 4 features:

ACTIONS (games)

Children perceive, explore, search and learn to observe from another perspective, trough experimentation. The games we conduct materialize an open atlas in continuous evolution. They are experimental games, the learning takes place trough the experience[5]: with different materials, new technologies, diverse graphic techniques, new strategies, ideas, sensations…

The teamwork reveals itself as a natural necessity, as the solution to create an exquisite corpse with the skills of many. Group and individual are temporary differences according to the game. Games that we can separate into: construction and spatial, sensorial, visual, digital, memory and observation, abstraction and representation, scale and proportion, negotiation games and games at buildings and the city.

CHARACTERS (players)

All is fair in game, but there are always certain rules that to obey: first acting and then thinking [6], reedom of speech and participation, integration and respect, equity and diversity [7] and attention to the latent cv [8].

SPACE - TIME (match)

We enjoy the game while we are playing, the pleasure is at the action, not at reaching the goal. The game is limited in time and space, we don’t know how and when it is going to end [9]. The players enjoy freedom of speech, action and movement: they move, explore, group, share…

ARTEFACTOS (construcciones, ¿juguetes?)

DEVICES (contructions, toys?)

The child has always played construction, psicologies state that such an expressive demonstration is so rooted into their nature as the drawing is [10]. The very scarce researches about the issue, like Krötzsch’s [11] at the twenties and Muntañola’s [12] at the seventies, discern between several development phases, based on Piaget’s theory[13].

Chiquitectos is at the same time a research project: how do we play NOW? how do we learn TODAY? Videogames are changing our notion of space and time as cinema and television did back in the twentieth century. [14] There are already some publications [15] about how the changes at learning are happening. The use of new technologies is modifying the mental processes, our way to harvest information. If it is presented to us one way, the brain will learn it that way.[16]

But Chiquitectos is above all an educational project, an enterprise that aims to involve children with the world surrounding them and awake their interest on their built ambiance and the sustainable development. We hope to awake a critical eye, contribute to creating participative citizen and responsible for their own decisions, able to act in order to change the way the things are. By playing architecture we introduce a new way of learning to the future’s society. And if there wouldn’t be such a future… to an alternative present. 3
