We will continue to foster a positive, caring school climate where we respect and value diversity and prepare individuals for success in higher learning and careers. Dear Panther Families, Happy autumn! The school year is off to a terrific start, and we are approaching the halfway mark of the first marking period. This year, instruction will continue to follow Common Core Curriculum Standards as we implement a writing program that will help develop our students as narrative, informative, and opinion-based writers; examine reading strategies to strengthen comprehension; and apply critical thinking skills through the Standards of Mathematical Practices and CRA Model for Mathematics. We also have new components to support literacy embedded in the school day. Your involvement and support will be needed as we encourage our students to think critically and apply learning in new ways. Set aside time for your child to read daily, and ask them questions about what they are reading. Encourage your child to persevere when faced with challenges. When they make a mistake, give your student a chance to find the mistake and correct it. These are valuable skills, and we need to continue to work together to help your student reach his/her potential. At Pasadena Elementary, we are dedicated to the academic, social, emotional, and physical growth for each student, regardless of race, color, socio-economic status, disability, or other family or social situations. Supporting the county's Strategic Plan, our school staff is dedicated to elevating our students. Parental and community involvement will be key to our success, so please look for opportunities to get involved through the school activities or the PTA. We invite you to “Journey Through Cultural Arts” with your child on Friday, October 6. This classroom visit will enable you to observe learning in action. For safety reasons, siblings are not permitted. If you have not received emails from the school or AACPS through our Blackboard Connect system, please contact the school so that we may update your contact information. Whenever you make a change to your home, work, or cell phone, or address, please be sure to update your information with the school. It is important that we have accurate contact and transportation information on file. Our first service project, Harvest for the Hungry, will begin this month. Our fifth-grade students are making preparations and taking on a variety of leadership positions to host this schoolwide event. Look for more information to follow, and help feed families in need. There are many calendar changes this year. Please take a close look and compare your family calendar to the AACPS calendar. Thank you for doing your best to schedule family vacations when school is closed. We look forward to our first marking period Parent Teacher Conference that is scheduled for Thursday, October 19 th . Teachers will be contacting you to schedule a time to meet. Please join us for the Chesapeake cluster event at Chesapeake High School on Saturday, October 21 st from 5:30-9:00pm. We would also love to see you at the Fall Festival on Friday, October 27 th from 6:30-8:30pm. On Friday, September 29, 2017, your child will have brought home a Federal Impact Aid Survey form. Please

assist us by filling out the information requested on the form and return it to your child’s school, Pasadena ES.

The U.S. Department of Education has requested a survey form for each child, the complete address of the

Parent/Guardian’s Employer if they work on Federal Property, and each survey must be signed and dated by

the Parent/Guardian.

If needed forms may be obtained from the school or downloaded from the AACPS website (www.aacps.org)

under Student Forms. The Federal Impact Aid Survey form for 2017-2018 will be available to download. We

will also be using our ConnectEd Automated Telephone Notification System to remind everyone about the

significance of completing and returning this survey. The school system receives approximately $2 million in

funding from the Federal Government in support of children after the forms are processed.

On Tuesday, October 31st, Pasadena Elementary students will participate in a storybook character parade around the car loop. The parade will begin at 2:15 pm. Students should bring their costume to school in a clearly marked bag. Costumes must connect with a character in a storybook and must fit over the students clothing, as they will have a limited amount of time to get dressed. The costumes should be simple enough for students to put on with minimal adult assistance. Costumes should be school appropriate with no weapons, violence or blood. Faces must be uncovered (no masks).

After the parade, the students will have a Fall Festival party in the classroom from 2:45-3:30 pm. Only room parents are allowed to attend the party. Siblings cannot attend.

Help Your Child Succeed By Building Good Attendance Habits

A few facts to consider: 1. Absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year. 2. The academic impact of missing school is the same whether the absences are excused or unexcused. 3. Absences can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up 4. Being late to school can lead to poor attendance.

ACCEPTANCE

Each month we will focus on a different character trait. This month’s trait is

acceptance. During Global Studies all students will be introduced the book “You

Be You” by Linda Kranz. This book reinforces that we are all unique and it is important to

appreciate and accept our differences. Students will create their own unique project that will be used to construct a

display in our outside classroom.
