Parts of Speech
Contractions
Word or phrase combining sounds of a longer phrase.
Examples: Won’t (will not); Isn’t (is not)
Nouns
A person, place, or thing.Examples: teacher, cat, home, pencil.
Verbs
Action words.Examples: play, run, jump.
Pronouns
Substitutes for nouns the indicates persons or things asked for.
Examples: him, her, whom
Adjectives
Words to describe a noun.Examples: good, cold, shiny.
Proper Nouns
Names for unique people, events, or places.Examples: Michigan, George Washington,
Halloween.
Abbreviations
A shortened form of a word or phrase.Examples: U.S. (United States), Dr. (doctor),
lb. (pound).
Compound Words
Two words joined to form a new word.Examples: housetop, backpack, newspaper.
Past Tense
A word describing something that happened in the past.
Examples: rained, fell, slept.
