One of the nation’s leading entrepreneurs will receive The Helen Gordon Davis Women’s Leadership Award at the second Waves of Change luncheon presented by The Helen Gordon Davis Centre for Women.

Sheila Johnson, cofounder of Black Entertainment Television (BET), CEO of Salamander Hotels and Resorts, and the first black American female billionaire, will accept the award on March 10, 2017 as part of the Centre’s year-long 40th anniversary observance.

Sheila ranks second only to Oprah Winfrey among the wealthiest black females in the United States and seventh among all African-Americans. She is the first African-American woman to be an owner or partner in three professional sports franchises: the Washington Capitals (NHL), the Washington Wizards (NBA), and the Washington Mystics (WNBA). In 2006, she was named Global Ambassador to Care, a nonprofit dedicated to ending poverty through women’s empowerment.

Sandra Freedman is the first recipient of the Waves Award which pays tribute to a local woman who has turned the tide for women’s leadership in our Tampa Bay community. Ms. Freedman served on City Council from 1974 and then as Council Chair from 1983 through July 16, 1986. She completed the remaining term of Mayor Bob Martinez who resigned to successfully campaign for Governor of Florida. When Ms. Freedman took the oath of office on July 16, 1986, she became Tampa’s first woman mayor. After completing the remainder of Martinez’s term, Freedman was twice elected Mayor of Tampa.

During Mayor Freedman’s terms in office, the Tampa opened a new City Convention Center; opened the Florida Aquarium, instituted a city wide recycling program and water conservation program; initiated the award-winning annual Hillsborough River clean up program; and restored Bayshore Boulevard. In 1990, Tampa was designated as the “All-American City.”

The Women’s Business Centre is located at our main headquarters at 305 S. Hyde Park Ave. The circa 1890s mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is known as one of the finest examples of classic revival architecture in Tampa.

The Women’s Business Centre is housed within the mansion on the first Floor. The business centre is a state-of-the-art training center with technology and an on-site counselor to deliver one-to-one business coaching, training and advice to women starting and growing new businesses as well as inspirational and motivational networking events.

That’s why we began the Silent Samaritans Fund. The Fund enables women, lacking income or insurance, to receive services from Master’s-level licensed counselors at The Helen Gordon Davis Centre for Women. Currently we offer services at several locations.

To celebrate the generosity of the Silent Samaritans, the Centre for Women will hold an annual “Celebration and Thanks Giving Breakfast” Silent Samaritans will gather for food, and an uplifting, inspiring presentation by women of achievement.
