Effective January 1, 2013, the American Medical Association (AMA) introduced a se-
ries of changes to the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes. The new codes reflect more
current behavioral health practices which studies indicate should result in improved member out-
comes and a reduction in long-term healthcare costs. In addition, the AMA added Evaluation
and Management (E/M) and add-on codes to help document clinical details such as duration of
the therapy session and the complexity of interaction.
At the same time, many outdated codes such as 90801 and 90802, were removed and add
on codes for psychiatry and interactive complexity have been included. Together, these changes
will assist providers in better tracking member services delivered.
In order to support providers through this transition, the CT BHP has updated its cov-
ered services table and authorization schedules on www.CTBHP.com to reflect the new CPT
codes. You can find information pertaining to reimbursement rates for services on the CT
DSSMAP website, www.CTDSSMAP.com.

Inpatient Concurrent Reviews Transition to the Web
The CT BHP continuously evaluates its review process to reflect the business needs of its
providers. In December 2012, we shortened the inpatient pre-certification process, reducing the
amount of clinical information –and completion time- required.
By March 22, 2013, hospitals on the CT BHP bypass program had begun submitting
their inpatient concurrent reviews online via the ProviderConnect system. The CT BHP conduct-
ed five trainings to over 50 users at 17 locations across Connecticut to introduce the new process.
The CT BHP website, www.CTBHP.com, features additional training materials including a tem-
plate and user manual. A training video will also be posted shortly.
Response to the online concurrent review process has been positive. Many providers
have reduced completion time, increasing their availability to our members. If you have any
questions about the new review standards, please contact Provider Relations at 1 (877) 552-8247

CCAR and the CT BHP Embrace Social Media to Support Recovery
The Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery
(CCAR) envisions a world where the power, hope and healing
of recovery from alcohol and other drug addiction is more
thoroughly understood and embraced. In July of 2012, CCAR
began working with the partnership on two social media
recovery campaigns called “CCAR Affirmations” and
“A Recovery Minute.”
In the past nine months, CCAR has tweeted over 500 affirmations to nearly 400 fol-
lowers in support of their ongoing recovery. CCAR has also produced over a dozen Recovery
Minute videos of individuals sharing their personal stories of addiction and recovery that ap-
pear on YouTube. Several more are in production. Hundreds of people have visited the Re-
covery Minute YouTube channel to date, with hits growing daily. Participation in these pro-
jects is simple and completely free. To begin receiving CCAR daily affirmations or to view a
Recovery Minute story, click the appropriate link above.
In October 2012, ValueOptions, CT issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to partner
with a community-based peer program to provide recovery and wellness services to our mem-
bers. The CT BHP reviewed 11 proposals from a variety of organizations using a weighted
scoring system to consider a number of factors: program qualifications, cultural competency,
community and family engagement, data management, staffing, innovation, outcomes and
responsiveness to community needs.
The selection committee was pleased to award the contract to The National Alliance
for Mental Illness (NAMI). CT BHP was impressed with NAMI’s two-tier and innovative
approach to recovery and wellness. The first aspect of NAMI’s proposal involves a peer
support training program for young adults, thus building future capacity. NAMI’s second
component involves the development of an online resource that will provide expert content,
reference materials, education in peer mentoring, blogs and linked testimonials. In both
ventures, NAMI is seeking individuals and community partners who are invested in helping
to reduce the stigma of mental illness in new ways.

A core objective of the Provider Relations and Network Operations Departments is to
educate and support the provider community as they navigate the behavioral healthcare sys-
tem. We also strive to familiarize providers with evolving CT BHP policies and procedures.
In 2013, there are two major components to our provider training. We offer biweekly
ProviderConnect training webinars. Each of these online trainings is approximately 90
minutes long and covers every major aspect of the ProviderConnect system. Participants learn
how to obtain their own IDs and passwords, complete authorization requests, open saved
drafts, view and print authorization letters and complete discharge information. To view our
training calendar and register for these webinars online, view our Webinar Training Invitation.
Our provider training program also offers live monthly workshops held at our Rocky
Hill, CT office. Workshops are conducted the first Wednesday of each month and will cover
topics requested by the provider community. To date, we have trainings scheduled through the
summer covering issues such as the DSS Spend-Down process, the Affordable Care Act, and
Digital Engagement with Social Media. Complete workshop descriptions and registration can
be accessed through our website at www.CTBHP.com.
