Clinical reasoning can have a positive impact on clinical outcomes – but flawed clinical reasoning can lead to errors, with potentially dire consequences.

The 2017 Partners in Veterinary Education Conference program will explore the themes of clinical reasoning, error management and error disclosure in veterinary practice. Our speakers and panellists will share their experiences and perspectives across a range of disciplines, from the medical field, pathology, production, mixed and companion animal practice.

The conference will be an informative, thought provoking day. You will have the opportunity to meet our recent graduates (and perhaps catch up with interns you’ve played a role in training) at the Cocktail Party. Please mark the date in your diary. There is no cost to our Partners in Veterinary Education to attend this conference, it is a way of us thanking you for your contribution to veterinary education and the development of our profession.

Anne Fawcett

Anne Fawcett is a lecturer in veterinary professional practice in the Faculty of Veterinary Science. Anne has teaching experience as a lecturer and unit of study coordinator. She developed a new ethics course within professional practice and has lectured on veterinary ethics at both the University of Sydney and the University of Queensland.

Sanaa Zaki

BVSc (Hons) MACVSc GradCertEdStud (Higher Edu)

Sanaa Zaki graduated from the University of Sydney in 1992. She became a Member (by examination) of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists, Anaesthesia and Critical Care Chapter in 1997 and completed the Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies (Higher Education) at the University of Sydney in 2005. Since 1995 she has been teaching, conducting clinical research and providing clinical service within the Faculty of Veterinary Science at the University of Sydney and as Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Anaesthesia she teaches final year students clinical anaesthesia.. Recently, her passion for teaching has expanded to include curriculum development and teaching in the area of Professional Practice in the new DVM program She is currently completing a PhD looking at ‘Understanding the Pain of Osteoarthritis’.

Andrew Coggins

MBChB FRCP (UK) FACEM FRCEM MAcadMEd

Dr Andrew Coggins is a full time Emergency Department Staff Specialist at Westmead Hospital in Sydney. He is a Senior Lecturer in Emergency Medicine at the University of Sydney and frequently involved with the supervision of medical and nursing staff as well as the teaching of medical students. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (UK) and the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine. He is interested in free open access medical education (FOAM) and started the popular website www.emergencypedia.com in 2013. His particular interests include teamwork in healthcare, simulation based medical education, medical systems and development of the postgraduate Emergency Medicine curriculum. Outside of medicine he enjoys gardening and spending time with his 9-month old son.

Dr Coggins is currently working on the following strategic priorities as part of his role in Simulation in Western Sydney: A sustainable and evidence based simulation curriculum for junior doctors at Westmead Hospital; and Training of Skilled Facilitators to improve the future of training at Westmead, in particular in the area of healthcare ‘debriefing’.

Michael Reynolds

BVM&S DCHP MRCVS

Mike Reynolds qualified from the University of Edinburgh in 2003 and after three years in mixed practice, has since worked exclusively in production animal medicine. He gained the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Certificate in Cattle Health and Production in 2011, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Diploma in Cattle Health and Production in 2015 and is an RCVS recognised Specialist in Cattle Health and Production. He has published and presented work on Cattle Health and Production in the UK and on the international stage with his main interests in the epidemiology and control of infectious disease, clinical governance and Advanced Reproductive technologies.

Annette Katelaris

MBBS MPH FRACGP

Annette Katelaris is an Associate Professor and the founding Director of Professional Medical Education at Sydney Medical School. Her group have developed 6 postgraduate Master programs which they deliver to young health professionals. Formally, Annette was Editor of the Medical Journal of Australia and contributed to the establishment of the Australian Clinical Trials Alliance. Annette was a practising general practitioner for more than 20 years and is the co-developer of Juno Childsafe, a novel child safety device for the storage of medications.

James Carroll

BVSc (Hons I)

James Carroll is a Veterinarian and the star of Village Vets Australia on The LifeStyle Channel. Born in Queensland, James grew up between his family’s farm in Bundarra in Northern NSW, Sydney and Brisbane. James graduated from Sydney University in 2004 with first class honours, and first worked in mixed practice in Northern NSW in Barraba and Manilla, gaining experience across all aspects of mixed practice. In 2007 James travelled to work in the UK where he worked until 2010. James worked in Northern Wales, Cambridgeshire and Kent in mixed practice and in a 24 hour Emergency Centre.

Following extensive travels in a campervan around Europe for several months, James returned to Australia with his wife, Ronnie, in 2010. James initially worked at Ku-Ring-Gai Vet Hospital in Sydney before moving to Berry in 2012. James completed his AACV pregnancy testing exam in cattle in 2005 and the head vet course for vetting Endurance rides the same year. James is currently enrolled in a Masters degree in Small Animal Practice through Murdoch University. James has a special interest in small animal medicine, ultrasound of both small and large animals and in Bull fertility.

Anthony Bennett

BVSc (Hons I)

Anthony Bennett is a veterinarian and the star of Village Vets Australia on The LifeStyle Channel. Anthony graduated from Sydney University in 2004 with first class honours. His first job was at the Berry Vet Clinic, working for Geoff Scarlett and Geoff Manning, which enabled him to live on the family farm in Nowra. Anthony gravitated towards the dairy cattle and small animal medicine and surgery aspects of the clinic. In 2005 Anthony sat and passed The Australian Cattle Association pregnancy testing exam. Soon after he became accredited with Animal Health Australia to manage cattle, sheep, goat and alpaca herds in their respective Johnes market assurance programs. Anthony is registered to manage sheep herds for ovine Brucellosis and is also an AQIS accredited vet for live animal export.

Taking a share in the practice in 2008 with now-retired veterinarian Dr Geoff Manning, he today co-owns and operates the practice with his best friend James Carroll. They opened a third practice, All Creatures Clinic, in the coastal area of Shoalhaven Heads last year. Currently President of the Shoalhaven branch of the Australian Veterinary society and honorary vet at the Berry Show, Anthony is also on the Dairy Panel for the Royal Easter Show. Anthony is engaged to successful equestrian showjumper, Sidney Roberts.

John Baguley

John graduated from The University of Sydney and worked mostly in small animal practice for over 10 years. While in practice he completed his College membership in pharmacology and an MBA from Macquarie University. John joined the University of Sydney Faculty of Veterinary Science in 2003 where he coordinated the Professional Practice Program and the final year Veterinary Student Internship Program. John has a PhD in veterinary practice marketing and a Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies (Higher Education). His research interests include veterinary practice management and education. He is currently Registrar of the Veterinary Practitioners Board of NSW and an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney.

Stephen Yeomans

BSc(Vet) BVSc MVSc MANZCVS DACVP (Anatomic & Clinical)

Stephen is dual-certified by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists in both anatomic and clinical pathology. He has 18 years experience working in veterinary diagnostic laboratories, including a year on faculty at the University of Tennessee. Stephen has been head subject examiner and chair of the examination committee for the Pathobiology Chapter of the ANZCVS. He serves the AVA as co-ordinator of the small animal stream at AVA national conference as well as sitting on the NSW division committee and the ASAVA executive committee. In the laboratory Stephen consults on all aspects of veterinary pathology including histology, cytology, haematology and biochemistry.

Lara Boland

BVSc MANZCVS (Feline Medicine) Dipl. ECVIM-CA

Lara graduated from the University of Sydney in 2004 and initially worked in feline and general small animal practice in Brisbane and Canberra. She has completed internships in small animal/emergency medicine at the Animal Referral Hospital, Sydney and the University of Bristol, UK. She commenced an International Cat Care sponsored residency in small animal medicine in 2010 at the University of Bristol and returned home to Australia in 2013 to work at the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Sydney. Lara has completed Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists membership examinations in feline medicine and the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine specialist examinations.

Geraldine Hunt

BVSc PhD MasterVetClinStud Dipl. ACVS

Geraldine Hunt graduated from the University of Sydney and worked in private practice before undertaking a PhD in cardiac electrophysiology. She returned to the University of Sydney for a small animal surgery residency (Fellowship of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists) before working at the same institution as a Lecturer in Anatomy, followed by Small Animal Surgery. Her main interests are in the anatomy, biology and treatment of congenital vascular diseases of dogs, reconstructive surgery (in particular, skin flaps) and new techniques for veterinary education in comparative anatomy and medicine. Geraldine is dedicated to better understanding small animal surgical diseases and refining surgical options to allow development of practical methods of treatment, improving veterinary practice and patient welfare world-wide.
