14 April 2015 S Schätzel: Particle Physics 2015 - Introduction 2
ContentContent Overview of Particle Physics
QED, EM Scattering, Accelerators, Detectors, Weak Interaction, Electroweak Unification, QCD, Proton Structure, CP Violation, Neutrinos
Not from scratch!
Will assume basic knowledge of fundamental forces, leptons, quarks, hadrons and Special Relativity as covered in Heidelberg Bachelor Programme (including lecture PEP5)
Introduce some theoretical concepts
Goal: intuitive understanding of reaction rates and particle detection

Lecture organisationLecture organisation 10-15 min break after first 45 min of each lecture Figures and Pictures
available from lecture webpagehttp://www.physi.uni-heidelberg.de/~sschaetz/teaching/PP15/
user: student, password: mkep1 Lecture notes
available for the first 6-7 lectures (Theoretical basis and QED) from the lecture webpage
Exercise SheetsExercise Sheets You can work in groups of up to three people and hand in one
solution together (all will get the same score). distributed on Tuesdays, to be handed in the following Tuesday
printed copies in lecture
PDF versions in Übungsgruppenverwaltung 50% of total points required to qualify for exam
ExamExam 2h written exam on Thursday, 23 July 2015 The grade for the lecture will be determined exclusively by the
exam. Procedure:
bring an identity card with picture
aids: A4 sheet (front and backside) with hand-written or printed notes
we provide: electronic calculator (Texas Instruments TI-30 or similar) Clebsch-Gordan elements/d-matrix table sheet with properties of “unusual” particles (kaon, Lambda, …) paper
