BYOD@CSHS Participation Agreement

Caboolture State High School aims to provide students with the opportunity for more

personalised learning through access to technology both at home and school. With the

privilege of using a device at school comes the responsibility to use it in a manner that is in

keeping with our core values: pride, respect, integrity, diligence and excellence.

1. Participation

a. Before students are permitted to connect their device to our network:

This Participation Agreement must be read, signed and returned.

Participation fee must be paid to Cashier - BYOD 1 supported choice $80; BYOD 2 own choice Everyday $20, Media $40.

NB BYOD 2 own choice devices can only be joined to our network if they meet the minimum specifications (please check carefully at point of purchase).

b. Participation ends:

If the student is no longer enrolled at the school.

Potentially through breach of this Agreement, the school’s ICT Access Agreement or the school’s Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students. Note: The laptop may be retained within the school during any period of suspension.

c. All students will receive instruction on how to access the network and relevant resources and

programs. They are not to share their access with anybody else.

d. To assist management of private devices connected to the school’s network, all must conform to a

standard naming convention. As part of the BYOD@CSHS program, your student’s laptop must be

named as per their MIS ID (the unique identification issued by Education Queensland on enrolment eg

cbrad175).

e. While in the program, students are expected to maximise the opportunity bringing their own device

affords. Following teacher instructions and establishing a constructive learning relationship is essential

to this. Being resourceful and independent in optimising the potential of technology will also be

important.

f. Students are expected to recognise when and where use of their laptop for leisure purposes is

appropriate. If this does not occur, mediation with parents will take place and the benefit of the

program for that individual reviewed.

g. Learning is to be respected. Students are to adopt an etiquette that does not interfere in any way with

the work of other students, either in the same class or anywhere else on the school network. (This

etiquette includes a ban on non-curriculum related networking, downloading or messaging; playing

music, movies and games; touching or using any other student’s laptop without prior permission.)

h. Students are not to bring to school or share with other students material considered illegal or

inappropriate for a school environment.

2. Equipment

a. To participate in BYOD@CSHS, students need to provide a laptop that meets the program’s minimum

specifications, a carry case, anti-virus software, a USB (EVERYDAY 4GB, MEDIA 16GB minimum) and

headphones.

b. Students will install MS Office as part of the connection process. They do not need to buy this product

as Education Queensland provides it free of charge to all state school students.

c. Media device students will be provided with Adobe CC as requested and on proof of licence payment.

d. Students are to be prepared for learning every day with equipment ie fully charged laptop, carry case,

portable storage (USB) and headphones. They must also be prepared with basic stationery for any off-

line learning.

e. Devices should be brought to school fully charged as recharging facilities are not provided.

f. Students are responsible for the security of their laptops at all times and must take their laptops home

each day. Lockers are not available. All property should be clearly labelled with the student’s name.

Students may be held accountable for any deliberate damage. Common sense and responsibility for

property is expected.

g. Students must use a carry case. It should be one of the approved hard-sided varieties for maximum

protection.

h. It is strongly recommended that parents insure their child’s device for loss or damage. The school

accepts no responsibility for loss or damage of the device or peripherals.

3. Network and internet access

a. Students will be able to connect to the Education Queensland Network and have filtered internet and

email while connected to our network.

b. Students are to connect their device to the designated wireless network only. Laptops must not be

made a member of any other domain or workgroup in such a way that it removes the laptop from the

school’s network or interferes with its operation on the school network.

c. Students are not to use mobile phones to create hot spots and access non-filtered internet.

d. The school uses AB Tutor to assist management of student internet and network access.

e. Connectivity is governed by the school’s ICT Access Agreement and Responsible Behaviour Plan for

Students. Breaches of these agreements could mean loss of access.

f. Students’ home internet browsing is not managed by the school. No web filtering system can be 100%

effective and it is the parent/guardian’s responsibility to monitor student Internet usage. The school

accepts no responsibility for consequences of Internet access outside the school.

g. Internet connectivity is required at home to facilitate software updates, homework and assessment.

Page 4: Participation Agreement - Caboolture State High …...BYOD@CSHS Participation Agreement Caboolture State High School aims to provide students with the opportunity for more personalised

4. Technical support

a. Students should see the school technical support team before school or during school breaks if they

require assistance.

b. The level of support available to students is dependent upon the level of program participation (ie

BYOD 1 supported choice or BYOD 2 own choice).

c. Ongoing support is reliant upon appropriate, reasonable, courteous student conduct.

BYOD 1 supported choice:

- Students will receive school IT support and coordination of authorised repair agents if necessary for

warranty and accidental damage repairs.

- The school reserves the right to re-image the laptop to ensure a functional system and to overcome

problems with the operation of the computer.

- Students will be responsible for the backup of data on a regular basis and prior to re-imaging.

- The school is not responsible for restoring any programs, music, pictures or other data which may

have been installed by the student.

- Where a problem cannot be solved at school level, authorised repair agents will facilitate repairs.

- The student and parent/guardian should not arrange or allow any repair or maintenance work to be

carried out on the laptop by unauthorised persons.

BYOD 2 own choice:

- IT support staff will assist in network connection and school software functionality but will not be able

to provide onsite support or service for hardware or operation issues. This is the family’s responsibility.

5. Software

a. Any software provided by the school is not to be copied, deleted or transferred for any reason without

prior consent from the school.

b. Students will have access to a range of school-owned software. BYOD 2 - own choice students will

need to access this from the network.

c. Students have the right to install additional software onto their laptop; however the student must hold

a valid license and the software must be appropriate for a laptop used in a school environment.

d. Laptops may be periodically audited by the school and the student asked to present a valid license for

any software which has been installed.

6. Virus protection

a. Computer viruses, malware and malicious code have the potential to severely damage and disrupt

operations within the school and the Department’s networks. It can also be costly to restore the

network, infected hardware or software to its previous state and operability.

b. Viruses can enter laptop computers through:

- Removable media such as CDs, DVDs and USB memory sticks

- Emails / Phishing attempts (emails linking to malicious websites)

- The Internet (including web browsing, FTP programs and chat rooms)

- File download

- Network file shares, such as servers and shared folders

BYOD 1 supported choice laptops have anti-virus software installed as part of the Windows operating

system. Families are welcome to install their own if they wish. At all times, all BYOD@CSHS students

must have anti-virus software installed. They will be unable to connect to the network without it.

Page 5: Participation Agreement - Caboolture State High …...BYOD@CSHS Participation Agreement Caboolture State High School aims to provide students with the opportunity for more personalised

7. Responsible use This agreement is in addition to the ICT Access Agreement and the school’s Responsible Behaviour Plan

for Students as signed on enrolment. Any use of a device or related conduct deemed inappropriate by

the school may result in the withdrawal of BYOD privileges.

Expectations of BYOD@CSHS Students

1. You should use your laptop to support your learning both at home and at school.

2. While at school, you must follow teacher expectations and rules around technology use and management.

3. Your CabConnect access is issued to you alone. You must not share this or tell anyone else your account name and password.

4. You are responsible for the security and care of your laptop.

5. You are responsible for regularly backing-up all necessary data.

6. You must ensure that school software is not copied, deleted or transferred for any reason at all.

7. All software installed on the laptop must have a legitimate license and be appropriate for school.

9. Any personal data files stored on the laptop are not to be uploaded to school server(s).

10. You must only connect to the school’s network via CabConnect and must ensure your connection to our network does not compromise the school’s operation- no streaming, downloading (unless with permission) or hacking.

11. Take care not to void your device’s warranty. Do not allow anyone (other than an authorised repair agent) to open the hardware case of your laptop to install additional hardware (including video card, sound card, network card, modem, RAM or hard disk drive).

12. You must take all reasonable steps to prevent a virus from infecting your laptop, including never disabling the installed anti-virus software, monitoring any data that is downloaded or uploaded onto the laptop from the Internet or any device, and virus-checking any USB drives used in the laptop.

13. You must not intentionally use the laptop or internet services to which it may be connected:

BYOD DEVICES – minimum specifications Own choice devices will need to meet the following minimum specifications in order to operate satisfactorily on our

network and run the required programs. If you are unsure how to determine this, the school’s IT support staff will be able

to help. We recommend that existing devices not be more than two years old.

The following devices/processors do not meet minimum requirements:

- iPads

- Smartphones

- Androids

- Tablets

- HP Chromebooks

- Devices with Atom or Celeron processors

- Windows 10S devices

- Some Macs

- Linux distributions (eg Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora etc)

Please note that we cannot guarantee connectivity of Mac devices. If your student has a Mac, the IT support staff can

see if it will connect but cannot guarantee it. Students whose Mac can connect will be able to use the Internet and

networked resources but will not be able to print on our network at this point in time.

Remember, own choice devices cannot be supported by school IT support staff beyond network connection and basic

operation. Devices with operation or warranty issues will need to be returned to point of sale or own repair agents. This

could mean the student is without the device for some time.

For students to receive full day-to-day support with connection, software, hardware and warranty concerns, the

device needs to be purchased through the specified Toshiba or HP education vendors.
