Presidents Report November 2015

Hi Troops, Well back in the seat again, for the good or for bad, you have to put up with me for another year, but I must admit, I must be doing something positive and right or you would have given me the flick ages ago. Good for the ego, but apart from that, we do have a great and stable club and it is a pleasure to be involved with it and its members.

This month we have the Bill Evans Memorial Shoot on the 22nd November. Bill is pictured here outside his tent. Bill was a gold prospector in his spare time, having worked for the S.E.C. for many years. He was an early member of the club who enjoyed having a shot with his mates, as you do today. It is also a Club Barbecue so we will need to know in advance if you intend to turn up so we can cater for those attending. SO please let MEEEEE know well before the date if you are attending. We will log names so that those who have informed us will be the only ones fed. My Mobile No. is 0427400930 so if you are not at the November General Meeting, contact me so I can add your name to the list. The Xmas Barbecue is another thing to put into your social calendar. Tuesday 8th December at the clubrooms at the Quarry Hill Community Hall. Our club is supplying the all food including sweets, so it will be a good cheap social meeting for club members and their families. We will try for a 6.30 to 7 pm start as we have to fit in with the Karate Group who has the hall that evening to 7.30 but we will be under the veranda outside, so that should not affect them too much. It is a BYO alcoholic drinks if you want to do that, otherwise the club will supply water and soft drinks.

Not so far away is the Australia Day event at Lake Weeroona so if you are interested in displaying, please add this day to your diary as we need to plan for this day which is always a great day. It is a great PR Day for our club and the atmosphere is very relaxed. There will be no newsletter for December, so you won’t be able to use it as wrapping for your collectables under the Xmas tree. A new issue will come out in early 2016. This will give our Editor Sue a break for the time. For those members who will not be attending the Xmas Barby then I will take this opportunity to wish you all ‘Merry Xmas’ and hope the next year is a Great One. For all of our members and partners who are not well, stick in there and keep battling… Our thoughts are with you. Again, I leave this with you… In collecting, Gee Pee (Greg Penna, President)

October 29, 2015 From the SSAA of Victoria’s Noticeboard - The NFA inside information

The National Firearms Agreement (NFA) Technical Review has had law-abiding firearms owners on edge for the past four months.

As meetings with politicians and working groups take place behind closed doors, and often under a shroud of secrecy, the majority of firearms owners are left in the dark.

But SSAA Victoria can today reveal that a significant meeting took place this week in the State, and confirm two other major milestones that are approaching.

The Victorian Firearms Consultative Committee yesterday met with a representative from State Minister for Police Wade Noonan’s office and provided recommendations on the Adler issue and NFA review.

The committee – comprising representatives from SSAA Victoria, Field and Game Australia, Australian Deer Association, Firearm Safety Council, Victorian Farmers Federation, Victoria Police, Police Association Victoria and Department of Justice representatives – was united in its view that any decisions related to firearms regulation must be based on research and data, not prejudice.

We can confirm that the advice from the Victorian group is consistent with the recommendations being provided to the Commonwealth politicians.

SSAA is on the Firearms Industry Reference Group (FIRG) that has been advising Commonwealth Justice Minister Michael Keenan on this issue over the past few months.

SSAA and the shooting organisations involved in the working party have voiced concerns to Minister Kennan that any decision to reclassify the Adler lever-action shotgun could well have ramifications for lever and pump-action rifles.

SSAA this week revealed that Minister Keenan said no discussions about re-categorising lever-action rifles were taking place.

In the coming three months there will be two pivotal meetings.

In mid-November the justice ministers and police ministers from all of the States and Territories will meet. At this meeting, the Firearms and Weapons Policy Working Group (FWPWG) – charged with undertaking the NFA review – will present its final report.

The outcomes of next month’s meeting will then be reported to the Prime Minister and all Premiers and leaders of the ACT and Northern Territory at the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) in February next year.

What can I do?

As we approach the 11th hour of the review, it’s time for anyone who is yet to do so, to write to any relevant people in power. While the NFA is a Commonwealth agreement, it will be considered by both State and Commonwealth MPs, so writing to Victorian politicians is important. SSAA Victoria encourages members to call for any changes to firearms laws to be based on evidence and fact.

We also encourage every member to write to Victorian Minister for Police Wade Noonan, Shadow Minister for Police Edward O'Donohue, Attorney-General Martin Pakula, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Commonwealth Minister for Justice Michael Keenan.

Page 4: Parthian Shot - GCCA · 2020. 2. 28. · SSAA (Vic) objects to the assertion that the Adler five-shot shotgun is an “illegal weapon”, is “high-powered”, “rapid-fire” and

Labor has slammed Canberra’s decision to only ban the Adler seven-shot shotgun, calling instead for a blanket ban on all Adlers. With this in mind, we encourage SSAA members to write to David Feeney and Graham Perrett asking them to explain the factual basis on which they formed their opinion to support a ban on all Adlers.

The situation...

The review of the Adler 7 shot lever action shotgun is complete. Federal Justice Minister Michael Keenan

has advised that the National Firearms Weapons and Policy Working Group (NFWPWG) have

recommended to Police Ministers around Australia that lever action shotguns with a magazine capacity

greater than 5 - BE MOVED TO CAT D.

The Police Ministers are meeting on NOVEMBER 5 to consider the recommendation.

This is despite the NFWPWG and the Minister's own technical experts highlighting that there was no new

technology present in the Adler or any other lever action shotgun.

What does this mean? This places 7 shot lever action shotguns in the same category as highly restricted

assault rifles. This policy is based on emotion and not substantiated by any technical or ballistic evidence.

Confiscation & No Compensation - There is NO RECOMMENDATION for a buy back or COMPENSATION for

individuals that lawfully own lever action shotguns with a magazine capacity greater than 5 shots.

What can I do? It's time to step up and let YOUR POLICE MINISTER AND PREMIER KNOW that Australian shooters have

had enough! Licensed firearms owners should seek meetings with and register their objection with every

State Police Minister and Premier and their local State Member of Parliament.

October 8, 2015 - Nonsensical campaign against Adler must end

A campaign by lone Labor and Greens MPs to ban the Adler A110 five-shot lever-action shotgun in Australia is outrageous, totally unjustified and nonsensical.

Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (Victoria) and its 35,000 members is calling for Labor MP Graham Perrett and Greens MP Nick McKim to end their vendetta against law-abiding firearms owners.

Yesterday, Mr McKim claimed the Adler A110 five-shot shotgun was a “dangerous, rapid-fire weapon, regardless of whether the magazine holds five or seven rounds”.

Mr Perrett said in a press release, “The Liberal Government must immediately act to prevent these high-powered and illegal weapons from being imported to Australia. Gun critics have said the Adler 110, which can shoot multiple rounds in rapid succession, is faster and more powerful that other models of firearms.”

SSAA (Vic) objects to the assertion that the Adler five-shot shotgun is an “illegal weapon”, is “high-powered”, “rapid-fire” and “more powerful”.

“I want to make it explicitly clear – the Adler five-shot lever-action shotgun is not an illegal firearm,” SSAA (Vic) Chief Executive Officer Jack Wegman said. “Importation of the Adler A110 seven-shot shotgun, which was legal under Australian law at the time, was temporarily suspended without justification. This is a different firearm with a magazine capacity of five, to suit current Australian law.

“To say that the Adler five-shot shotgun is ‘more powerful’ is ludicrous. The Adler is a 12-gauge shotgun. It’s the most widely used gauge of shotgun in the world.

“The Adler does not use any technology which has not been in existence for 100 years. In fact, the first significant lever-action shotgun in 1860 was fed from a seven-round tubular magazine – just like the Adler A110 seven-shot shotgun.”

This firearm is legally available for sale only to people who have been vetted by Victoria Police as being a fit and proper person. Firearms owners must demonstrate a genuine reason to own a firearm, undergo a training course and pass a safety test before police will even consider their application for a license.

“We are talking about responsible people, who have been deemed responsible by Victoria Police,” Mr Wegman said. “If the police believe these people are fit to own a firearm for hunting, target shooting or pest eradication, why should the magazine capacity concern politicians?” The report of the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Reference Committee into Gun-Related Violence confirms that there is not comprehensive, verifiable, accurate and transparent data on which to base policies related to firearms, firearms ownership and firearms usage.

Page 6: Parthian Shot - GCCA · 2020. 2. 28. · SSAA (Vic) objects to the assertion that the Adler five-shot shotgun is an “illegal weapon”, is “high-powered”, “rapid-fire” and

“This lack of facts and data risks creating a vacuum which easily can be filled by instinct, intuition and prejudice,” Mr Wegman said. “I believe that’s what Mr Perrett and Mr McKim’s campaign is based on.

Their call for a ban on the Adler is about as credible as John Howard's statement in 2002 that he hated guns and that ‘the only people who should have guns are police, the military and the security industry’.”

SSAA (Vic) will continue to promote the facts relating to firearms ownership in Australia and hold accountable anyone who misinforms the public or distorts the truth.

Drive radio talks about the Adler (August 26, 2015) SSAA (Vic) chief executive officer Jack Wegman appeared on ABC’s Drive show on 774 yesterday afternoon. Program host Rafael Epstein questioned why the Adler A110 seven-shot shotgun should be available on a Category A licence.

A not so smart Gun Owner!

A .45 calibre round makes a pretty big hole; I can just imagine

how the conversation went:

"Hey honey...

Check out my new .45, it has a really great trigger pull"

Nice squeeze.............. Bang!!!!!!.............

Oh Shit.............

"Honey.............. I need another Budweiser

Damn that hurts............."

"Just off to Rivers for some new shoes...

And a book called...

Handguns for Dummies!"

A smart Blonde!

A blonde walks into a bank in Sydney and asks for the loan officer.

She says she's going to Hong Kong on business for two weeks and needs

to borrow $5,000.

The bank officer says the bank will need some kind of security for the

loan.

The blonde hands over the keys to a new Mercedes.

The car is parked on the street in front of the bank, she has the

title and everything checks out.

The bank agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan.

The bank's manager and its officers all enjoy a good laugh at the

blonde for using a $250,000 Mercedes as collateral against a $5,000 loan.

An employee of the bank then proceeds to drive the Mercedes into the

bank's underground garage and parks it there.

Two weeks later, the blonde returns, repays the $5,000 and the

interest, which comes to $15.41.

The loan office says, "Miss, we are very happy to have had your business.

This transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a little puzzled.

While you were away, we checked you out and found that you are a

millionaire.

What puzzles us is, why would you bother to borrow $5,000?"

The blonde replies... "Where else in Sydney can I park my car for two weeks for only $15.41 and expect it to

be there when I return?"

"Which Bank?"

Bankrupt Colt Gun Company Had Famous and Infamous Users by Susanna Kim 15 June 2015)

Rifles sit on display in the Colt's Manufacturing Co. booth on the exhibition floor of the 144th National Rifle

Association Annual Meetings and Exhibits, April 11, 2015, in Nashville, Tenn.

The Colt gun company, which recently filed for bankruptcy Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, has amassed a long history and a trove of famous and infamous gunslingers across the way.

The firearms of Samuel Colt, who opened his first plant in 1836 in Paterson, NJ, appeared in key moments in American history, including both sides of the Civil War. Years later, the Colt Single Action Army Revolver, introduced in 1873, was known as "the gun that won the West."

Gun Manufacturer Colt Filing Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

(NEW YORK) — The gunmaker Colt Defense LLC is planning to restructure under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to stay in business. Colt’s senior lenders will supply $20 million in financing to help the gun manufacturer to operate under the bankruptcy, according the Wall Street Journal.

Sam Colt received his first patent in 1836 and paved the way for the company to become well-known for its revolvers. In recent years, the company had more success supplying the Army with M4 combat rifles. The military dropped that contract two years ago. Though gun sales overall have surged since 2012, accounting and supply chain problems compounded with

the loss of the U.S. Army contract left the company $355 million in debt, the Journal reports. Colt plans to use the proceeds from a court-supervised auction to repay some of its lenders.

Among the American West's icons who carried a Colt was Army scout and buffalo hunter William "Buffalo Bill" Cody.

His Colt model 1873 Frontier Six Shooter Revolver sold for $40,625, including the buyer's premium, on June 14, 2014 through Heritage Auctions. It's one of only five known Colt Single Action Army Revolvers and the only Colt Frontier Six Shooter documented to have belonged to him.

Cody may have purchased the revolver at the famous firearm seller Hartley & Graham in January 1883 while on extended stay in New York City with his famous theater troupe, according to the auction house.

Another Colt firearm owned by American gangster "Al" Capone sold for $109,080 in June 2011 in London.

The nickel-plated six-shot double-action revolver came with an original personal letter from Madeleine Capone Morichetti, the widow of

Capone's brother, Ralph Capone, confirming that the gun "previously belonged to and was only used by Al Capone while he was alive."

Other famous "proponents" of the gun company include Wyatt Earp's friend and lawman William Barclay “Bat” Masterson, World War II General George Patton and President Theodore Roosevelt, Colt's website states.

Now Colt Defense, headquartered in West Hartford, Connecticut, has found itself with more debt than it can handle. However, according to

its bankruptcy filing dated Sunday, the company has $20 million in financing to continue operations during the bankruptcy proceedings.

"Importantly, Colt remains open for business and our team will continue to be sharply focused on delivering for our customers and being a good commercial partner to our vendors and suppliers," Colt's

chief restructuring officer Keith Maib, said in a statement. "We look forward to successfully executing on this plan, which provides a sound path of stewardship for an iconic American brand and the key stakeholders we serve.”

Sales of its handguns and rifles have slid. The company lost a decade-long government contract in 2012 that supplied the Army with the M4 carbine rifle, edged out by competitors like FN Herstal and Remington.

One of my jobs in the school library where I work is to catalogue topics featured in a bi-monthly publication called

Current Social Issues produced for students for discussion or to write opinion pieces on. This is an example of the

articles selected on the topic of Firearms. These particular articles are from an August edition.

Page 11: Parthian Shot - GCCA · 2020. 2. 28. · SSAA (Vic) objects to the assertion that the Adler five-shot shotgun is an “illegal weapon”, is “high-powered”, “rapid-fire” and

As you can see one article is called “Greens seek ban on rapid-fire shotguns’’ and another at the bottom of the

page is called ‘’Gun ban triggers Senator’s ire’’ so the students can read articles on both sides of the debate.

Sounds like Senator David Leyonhjelm formerly a member of the Shooters Party & now the Liberal Democratic

Party may be one worth contacting re Firearms issues to get more info or to work for Firearms shooters/collectors.

Government Jobs Once upon a time there was a king who wanted to go fishing. He called the royal weather forecaster and inquired as to the weather forecast for the next few hours. The weatherman assured him that there was no chance of rain in the coming days. So the king went fishing with his wife, the queen. On the way he met a farmer on his donkey. Upon seeing the king the farmer said, "Your Majesty, you should return to the palace at once because in just a short time I expect a huge amount of rain to fall in this area". The king was polite and considerate, he replied: "I hold the palace meteorologist in high regard. He is an extensively educated and experienced professional. And besides, I pay him very high wages. He gave me a very different forecast. I trust him and I will continue on my way." So he continued on his way. However, a short time later a torrential rain fell from the sky. The King and Queen were totally soaked and their entourage chuckled upon seeing them in such a shameful condition. Furious, the king returned to the palace and gave the order to fire the weatherman at once! Then he summoned the farmer and offered him the prestigious and high paying role of royal forecaster. The farmer said, "Your Majesty, I do not know anything about forecasting. I obtain my information from my donkey. If I see my donkey's ears drooping, it means with certainty that it will rain." So the king hired the donkey. And so began the practice of hiring jackasses to work in the government and occupy its highest and

most influential positions.

K-Mart Job Application

Jennifer, a manager at a local Kmart store, had the task of hiring someone to

fill a job opening. After sorting through a stack of resumes she found four people who were equally qualified.

Jennifer decided to call the four in and ask them only one question. Their answer would determine which of them would get the job. The day came and as the four sat around the conference room table, Jennifer

asked, 'What is the fastest thing you know of? 'The first man replied, 'A THOUGHT.' It just pops into your head. There's no warning. 'That's very good!' replied Jennifer. 'And, now you sir?’ she asked the second man. 'Hmmm...Let me see 'A blink! It comes and goes and you don't know that it ever happened. A BLINK is the fastest thing I know of. ''Excellent!' said Jennifer. 'The blink of an eye, that's a very popular cliché for speed. 'She then turned to the third man, who was contemplating his reply. 'Well, out at my dad's property, you step out of the house and on the wall there's a light switch. When you flip that switch, way out across the pasture the light on the barn comes on in less than an instant. 'Yep, TURNING ON A LIGHT

is the fastest thing I can think of'. Jennifer was very impressed with the third answer and thought

she had found her man. 'It’s hard to beat the speed of light, 'she said.

Turning to Wally, the fourth and final man, Jennifer posed the same question. Old Wally replied, 'After hearing the previous three answers, it's obvious to me that the fastest thing known is DIARRHEA. ''WHAT!?' said Jennifer, stunned by the response. 'Oh sure', said Wally. 'You see, the other day I had a rotten pain in the guts, so I ran for the bathroom, but before I could THINK, BLINK, or TURN ON THE BLOODY LIGHT, I shit meself!! 'Wally is now working at a Kmart near you!
