Part Time Teacher of Music

(0.6 FTE)

September 2021

The RoleWe require a talented and well qualified Part Time Teacher of Music (0.6 FTE) to teach Music from Year 7 to A level and make an enthusiastic contribution to the activities of a flourishing Music Department. The successful candidate will report to the Head of Music.

This is an exciting opportunity to join an outstanding HMC school with an exemplary reputation for academic results, innovation and pastoral care. Bromley High School is a consistently oversubscribed academically selective girls' school with 900 pupils from 4-18 and is a member of the Girls' Day School Trust (GDST).

The ‘All Steinway’ Music School is housed in purpose-built accommodation with 9 practice rooms, 2 large teaching rooms, an octagonal Recital Room and an iMac Music Technology Room. There are over twenty five visiting teachers, offering tuition on piano, strings, woodwind, brass, percussion – orchestral and kit, guitar – acoustic and electric, voice, harp and recorder.

A variety of choirs and ensembles rehearse weekly – Orchestras, Bands, Choirs, Jazz Group, Rock Groups and Chamber Ensembles. There are regular concerts, both formal and informal, in school and in the local community and a major annual concert at a London Venue. A Music Festival held each year enables all musicians to compete for the prestigious Music of the Year Award, and runs alongside a series of workshops delivered by professional players. The department is an ‘All Steinway School’ which includes the provision of a complete fleet of Steinway pianos in addition to extending links with prominent pianists world-wide; we are the first and only all girls’ school in the world to have this status.

The Music and Drama departments work closely together on annual productions, which have included Edward Scissorhands, High School Musical, a musical based on the life of Mary Quant which was taken on Tour to New York in October 2016, and our most recent production of Grease performed at the Churchill Theatre in Bromley. There are regular music tours, recently to France, Belgium, United States of America, Germany, Spain and the Czech Republic. The school has produced CD recordings of performances. Girls are encouraged to perform as much as possible and to take part in activities at the local music centre.

Music is taught to all girls in year 7, 8 and 9. Schemes of work have been devised to encompass the activities of Listening, Composing and Performing and are interlinked wherever possible, with cross-curricular themes included. This gives a good foundation for the Edexcel GCSE and A level course

Please note that the GDST recruitment policy means that contracts are subject to a probationary period.
