Catering and Hospitality has witnessed a significant increase in enrolments over the last five years, with excellent job outcomes. The College provides industry standard training kitchens, specialist pastry kitchens, a Bistro, servery and two public restaurants. The menus and styles of service mirror current industrial trends and all courses are developed in liaison with London's hospitality industry. Part-time students can benefit from these partnerships as well as receiving high quality training and a varied programme of catering work placements that have contributed to outstanding job opportunities. We also employ apprentices, all of whom have gained employment across a range of hospitality businesses including: Harrods, Chez Gérard, Laduree, Rhubarb, BMI and The Grosvenor House Hotel. Courses are also available for those already working in the industry but need recognised qualifications, which can lead to Commis Chef or Chef de Partie positions.

“After learning French at school many years ago I’ve always wanted to take it up again. I really was a beginner and the Barnet course was perfectly suited for my needs. I found the teachers motivational and my fellow classmates were terrific fun. After 2 years studying I feel confident enough to enjoy myself in Paris!”

The College offers excellent teacher training programmes accredited by the Institute of Education and the University of London. We have several ‘Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTTLS)’ courses, some with the additional benefit of underpinning knowledge for the A1 assessor award (QCF). A full ‘Diploma in Teaching Training (DTTLS)’ is offered as a 1st year programme with the 2nd year being based at the Institute of Education, which is a highly respected endorsement. Initial teaching training is suitable for those wishing to move into post 16 education, whatever the specialist subject, or for those who are regularly asked to train others at work and would like the qualification to develop and recognise those skills, leading to improved personal development and promotion at work.

Course fees are printed in the Course Listings throughout this Course Guide.

The listed fees include all tuition, registration and materials fees and, where marked, exam fees.

On some courses you will also be expected to provide your own uniform and/or equipment. On others there may be a cost associated with use of the College laser printers. Where there are additional costs such as these they will be explained at interview.

Fees can be paid in cash, by cheque or postal order, or by credit/debit card on 020 8266 4000.

You do not become a student or have access to the College facilities until your fees have been paid.

Fees are correct at the time of printing. But do check the fee again when you enrol as it may be different from that listed here.

Need financial help?

There are various ways you can get help with the costs of coming to College, and our Services for Students team can advise you on what options are available.

If you qualify for any of the concessionary fees below you should bring appropriate supporting proof for this.

Fees and Discounts

Learners who are still at School If you are under 16 on the 31 August 2012, you can enrol on some but not all of the courses in this Guide. Where you can enrol the listed fees will not apply. To find out which courses are applicable please call our Course Information team.

Learners who are aged between 16 and 18 on 31st August 2012 16-18 year-old learners do not generally have to pay course fees.

Learners who are aged 19 or over on 31st August 2012 If you do not qualify for a concessionary fee then the listed full fee will apply.

You can claim a concessionary fee if any of the following applies to you :

•   You are on Jobseekers Allowance (JSA) or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and the course will make you more employable.

•   You can show you are on other means-tested benefits and looking for work, and the course will make you more employable.

•   You are between 19 and 23 years old and you do not have a Full Level 2 qualification – this entitlement applies only to specific courses e.g. where the course you want to do is a Full Level 2 or where you need to do an Entry or Level 1 qualification before you can do the Full Level 2. It does not apply for ESOL courses.

•   You are aged between 19 and 24 years old and the course is your first Full Level 3 qualification.

•   The course you want to do will get you a Literacy or Numeracy qualification.

Payment assistance

•   You may be able to pay for your course in instalments over the first three months.

•   You may be able to claim from our Learner Support Fund. (Ask an advisor for more information).

•   Learners on means-tested benefits should speak to their Job Centre Plus Advisor to see if they are entitled to claim JSA or work-related ESA (WRAG).

Talk to Services for Students Information and Advice Officers for further help and guidance.

Proof of Discount

If you think you are entitled to a concessionary fee we need to see up-to-date proof of this when you enrol.

You may be entitled to a concession because of your previous qualifications, depending on the course you want to do. We would need to see some proof of these. Or you may be entitled to a concession because of your benefits status and the fact that you are looking for work.

The benefits we are allowed to consider for concessionary fees are:

•   Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)

•   Employment Support Allowance (ESA)

•   NASS support (for asylum seekers)

•   Income Support

•   Working Tax Credit if you are a dependent, only

•   Pension Guarantee Credit

•   Council Tax Benefit

•   Housing Benefit

Confirmation that you are receiving benefit and will be receiving benefit when the course starts will be required.

For asylum seekers this will be your latest receipts from the National Asylum Seeker Support System (NASS).

If you are on JSA or ESA we will need to see a letter from your DWP or benefits office dated within the last two weeks confirming that you are or will be receiving benefit at the time of enrolment. Your ES40 JSA signing book will not be accepted as evidence of Jobseeker’s Allowance.

In all benefits-related cases you will also have to sign a declaration stating that you are looking for work and that the course will help your job prospects.

Instalments

If the total tuition fee payable is more than £200 and your course lasts for 24 weeks or more, you have the option of paying in instalments over three months.

For example: if your course starts in September, you must pay the first instalment at enrolment and the third payment will be due before 30 November 2012.

Changing Courses

You will be asked to pay £5.00 for any change from one class to another unless this is because of a College decision.

International Students non EEA (European Economic Area)

If you are from outside the EEA, the fee for your course may be different from the fee in this prospectus. Visit http://www.barnetsouthgate.ac.uk/international and please check with Course Information before you enrol.

Refunds

•   Course fees will only be refunded in full if a course is cancelled. If a course is closed prematurely, a partial refund will be given, based on the number of cancelled sessions. The College reserves the right to close any class on which insufficient learners have enrolled. The decision to close classes may be made two weeks before the course is due to start – so don’t leave it too late  to enrol.

•   If, because of an illness, you are unable to take up a place or complete a course, a partial refund may be given. A medical certificate must support the application for refund, and any refund given will be subject to an administrative charge of £15.

•   If you do not take up a place or complete a course for any reason other than those listed above, there is no entitlement to a refund. You are also still liable to the College for any outstanding fees and will still have to pay them.

•   In exceptional circumstances, a refund may be made where it is considered appropriate.

•   If a refund is granted, but you have fees outstanding, the refund will be used as a credit against fees due.

•   In the event that a class tutor is ill every effort will be made to cover that class. If this is not possible the College will use reasonable endeavours to make up the lost time. In all such cases there shall be no entitlement to a refund.

•   Refunds will not be given if the College has to close due to storm, flood, fire or other unforeseen emergency.

•   If you choose not to take an examination, on a course where the exam fee is included in the listed fee, you will not receive a reduction or refund.

•   Unless the College has cancelled a class, the College registration fee will not be refunded under any circumstances.

•   Refunds can only be approved by the College’s Head of Management Information, or by a member of the Senior Management Team.

•   If you decide to move to a lower-fee course, there is no entitlement to a refund.

Please note: If a student wishes his/her refund to be paid to a third party, a letter of authorisation signed by the student must be sent with the refund request. This also applies if a third party has paid fees for a student.
