Welcome to the Central Bedfordshire College part-time course guide. Within this guide we are offering a host of new courses which are aimed at meeting the skills shortage within the local

region, enabling students to gain qualifications to help with their chosen career.

Due to popular demand we have re-launched a suite of Modern Language courses. During August we will also be running a series of Creative Arts short workshops which are designed to

provide a taster for a particular subject to enable students to gain a better insight into the subject.

We continue to offer outstanding information, advice and guidance to our students, ensuring that you receive the best support possible whilst studying at the College.

I wish you every success during your time at Central Bedfordshire College and as you progress to your chosen career or further studying.

With a wide range of qualifications aimed at all levels of ability, studying at Central Bedfordshire College will benefit you whether you wish to fulfil your career aspirations, or want to learn a new skill for a hobby or interest. Regardless of previous levels of study, we have the right course for you:

Students studying on any of our programmes are able to progress on to the next level once they have completed their course. The table opposite shows the entry requirements for each level of study. However, if you are unsure about which level to enter education please speak to a member of staff who will be happy to help with your query.

E N T R Y L E V E L Q U A L I F I C AT I O N S - these are ideal to build your confidence if you currently have minimal qualifications and wish to return to education.

G C S E s & A L E V E L S - it may be possible to combine these with other programmes. A Levels are the most popular route for gaining entry into university. Students study on a more academic programme than the more vocational BTEC route.

N V Q s - nationally recognised qualifications for each sector of employment and related directly to the persons work.

B T E C D I P L O M A S , C E R T I F I C AT E S A N D A W A R D S - the BTEC study level is dependent on previous qualifications and experience. Our BTEC qualifications cover a wide variety of course areas, enabling you to specialise in your chosen field.

F O U N D AT I O N D E G R E E S - enable you to study a Higher Education level course at your local College.

T H E Q U A L I F I C AT I O N S A N D C R E D I T F R A M E W O R K ( Q C F ) - is the new framework for creating and accrediting qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It’s at the heart of a major reform of the vocational qualifications system, which will become simpler to understand and use. The QCF:

• Recognises smaller steps of learning and enables learners to build up qualifications bit by bit • Helps learners achieve skills and qualifications that meet industry needs • Enables work-based training to be nationally recognised.

Every unit and qualification in the QCF has a credit value that tells you how long it takes to complete — one credit represents 10 hours’ work. Each unit and qualification also has its own level, between Entry level and level 8, to show how difficult it is.
