ABOUT USThe Gaiety School of Acting - The NationalTheatre School of Ireland was founded in 1986by internationally-renowned Theatre DirectorJoe Dowling in response to the lack of full timeactor training in Ireland at the time. The school isnow widely regarded as the country’s premiertraining facility for actors. The policy of theGaiety School of Acting - The National TheatreSchool of Ireland is to train actors for thetheatre, film and television industries. The schoolprovides an extensive programme of part-timecourses for adults, children and young peoplethroughout the country that encourage anindividual to grow in confidence and developtechniques which will enable them to respond tothe challenges of theatre, film and televisionwhile also being pro-active in the developmentof new work. The GSA also runs a widelyacclaimed full time actor training programme,which has been accredited through Dublin CityUniversity as a three year degree programme,and is currently awaiting funding through theHigher Education Authority.

PERFORMANCE WORKSHOPLearn the craft of acting. Students who havecompleted at least one term in the DramaWorkshop, or who have had previous dramaexperience can join the PerformanceWorkshop, where specific performance skillssuch as voice, movement, characterisation,improvisation, ensemble and devising will bedeveloped. Each term, a new performanceskill will be introduced such as dance, singing,mime or puppetry, which will be demonstratedin an end of term showcase. This course isideal for those students who are serious aboutacting and wish to begin developing solidskills.

THE YOUNG PERFORMERSCOMPANY(TEMPLE BAR ONLY)Advanced students are invited to join theYoung Performers Company, where they willwork with a group of highly motivated youngactors, preparing devised andclassical/contemporary scripts forperformance, under the guidance of anexperienced tutor/director. Students will alsoget a chance to explore complementaryelements of theatre such as writing, directingand stage managing. Each term culminates ina scripted performance. This course is suitedto students who are experienced in drama andwho wish to apply the skills they havedeveloped through focused performancework. Entrance is by audition only.*

YOUNG GAIETYSATURDAY SCHOOL(TEMPLE BAR, BRAY & NAVAN) (4 – 15yrs)The Young Gaiety Saturday School inTemple Bar, Navan and Bray, is the mostcomprehensive acting course available toyoung actors in Ireland. The year longprogramme consists of 3 ten week terms. Thestructure of the course is both flexible andcomprehensive, allowing students toparticipate in anything from a 10 week courseto a three year cycle. In Navan and Bray,within each age group, you can choosebetween the Drama Workshop and thePerformance Workshop. In Temple Bar weoffer both of these courses, as well as a thirdoption, The Young Performers Company.

DRAMA WORKSHOPHave fun, meet new friends, gain confidenceand expand your imagination in the DramaWorkshop. Aimed at students who are justbeginning to study drama, this lively,interactive workshop focuses on confidencebuilding exercises, improvisation andteamwork, and culminates in a devisedshowcase at the end of terms 2 and 3.Students will learn how to work effectivelyand confidently with their peers and gainconfidence in themselves, their creativity andimagination, and in their overallcommunication skills, all of which will lay thefoundation for the development of a wellrounded actor.

REGIONAL DRAMAWORKSHOP(4-19yrs – varies according to location)

The regional Young Gaiety Drama Workshopruns around the country in 6 locations:Malahide, Wexford, Castleblayney,Portlaoise, Thurles and Cork.

This year long programme consists of threeten week terms, and has a flexible structureallowing students to participate in anythingfrom a ten week course to a three year cycle.The course focuses on imaginative andconfidence building exercises, incorporatingskills such as dance, singing, creative writingand voice. Over the course of the year,students will receive valuable feedback anddirection from their tutor, and will follow aclear route of progression. Ultimately, theYoung Gaiety Saturday School aims to buildconfidence and creativity, freeing theindividual to play an informed andcontributory role, not only in Theatre, but in allwalks of life.

Each term will culminate in a devisedshowcase which parents and friends areinvited to attend. To encourage selfconfidence and ensure personal attention foreach student, class size is strictly limited andapplications are accepted on a first-comefirst-served basis.

FOSSETT’S CIRCUSWORKSHOP(8-16 years) – October Half Term

Roll up, roll up! For one week only thisOctober, the Gaiety School of Acting – TheNational Theatre School of Ireland will joinforces with Fossett’s Circus, Ireland’sNational Circus, to deliver a fun packed weekof circus training in the Fossett’s Big Topitself!

So if you’ve dreamt of unicycling, clowning,tightrope walking and more, join us in the BigTop to experience what it’s really like to jointhe circus!

Students will learn about the history of circusand how to create their own clown, includingcharacter development, make-up andcostume ideas. They will also practice avariety of circus skills such as juggling,diabolo, basic acrobatics, wire walking,trapeze and lots more! On the final evening,the students will become part of a realFossett’s show, wowing the audience withtheir amazing feats!

YOUTH THEATREWORKSHOPThis ten week course uses drama as amedium to reflect and respond to youngpeople’s lives. Using improvisation,participants learn to explore and enhancetheir imaginations. The course is bothenjoyable and challenging, enabling studentsto express themselves in a creative andconstructive manner. There is a showcase atthe end of each term that parents andfriends are very welcome to attend.

There will also be specialist skills e.g. dance,singing, creative writing and voiceincorporated into the programme.

MAKE A MOVIEThis exciting ‘hands-on’ course is designedfor students eager to learn the basics of filmmaking and to have a valued input into thecreation of an original short movie. Studentswill also explore the differences betweenstage and screen acting. In just one week,participants will write, direct and shoot ashort movie guided by an experienced tutor.Approximately 4-6 weeks after the end of thecourse, each crew/cast member will receivean edited DVD to remind them of their uniquefilm making experience.

At the end of the course allparticipants will have a portfolio of dramaticworks. STAGE COMBATACTOR TRAININGPROGRAMMEThese classes provide an opportunity foreveryone to learn stage combat, whether theyattend acting school or not. There are classesand workshops that cater for all levels of skill.These are open to everyone – professionaland amateur actors, theatre technicians,academics, and those who are simplyinterested.

THE INTRODUCTORY STAGE COMBATWORKSHOP

This is the workshop to choose if you havelittle or no experience of stage combat,offering technique and safety foundation skillsin the use of Rapier & Dagger FightTechniques for stage and screen and inUnarmed Combat, with emphasis on thetheatrical presentation of each system. Thecourse is practical, with students observingand then participating in the techniques andexercises, while being closely watched by aqualified instructor. No prior experience isnecessary for participation in this course.

THE STAGE COMBAT WORKSHOPThis is the workshop to choose if you havetaken an introductory course or have hadsome previous basic training. The courseoffers training in Weapons (Rapier and DaggerFencing) and Unarmed Combat for Stageand Screen, with emphasis on preparingstudents for the optional fight proficiency test.This is a performance based course withstudents applying action to text.On successful completion of this course, youmay opt to take the Irish Dramatic CombatAcademy (IDCA) fight proficiency test.Successful students will be awarded the IDCABasic Actor Combatant Certificate.

TUTORPaul Burke is a member of the Equity StuntRegister. He has worked as a Fight Director,Actor and Stunt Performer. ADULT THEATRECOMPANY– Cork OnlyAdvanced students are invited to join theAdult Theatre Company. Over the course ofthree terms, the group will work with aprofessional theatre practitioner on a chosentext or will devise a play. The result will beperformed in a Cork theatre or a site-specificvenue. The Company is designed for thosestudents who would like to further exploretheir potential in a concentrated rehearsalatmosphere. Students will take charge offundraising, advertising and promoting theplay, thereby learning the essentials ofindependent theatre work.

The Studio gives advanced students who areserious about their acting the opportunity toenhance and practise their skills, prepare forauditions and work in a concentrated,professional setting, receiving constantfeedback about their progress.
