INTRODUCTION TO PART THREE

Part Three (entries 1856 through 2010) describes the 154 nautical charts of the bays, coasts, harbors, lakes and rivers of Ireland published by the British Hydrographic Office in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries up to 2004. In keeping with Library of Congress usage, these catalog entries also include the numbers assigned to the charts by the British Hydrographic Office. The collection in the Geography and Map Division includes several charts published by the Admiralty from surveys made under the direction of Captain George A. Frazer, M. R. I. A., the noted hydrographer who, from 1842 to 1853, surveyed the northern, eastern, and southern coasts of Ireland as far as Cork.

The first and major portion of Part Three, entries 1856 through 2010, provides a full

bibliographic description of such B.A. charts in the Division. Within these numeric catalog entries, the chart numbers assigned by the British Admiralty Hydrographic Office are arranged sequentially, in accordance with the Division’s usage. Each numbered catalog entry provides, therefore, the B.A. chart number, the title of the chart, the date of publication, the dates of editions, the chart size in centimeters, and the scale. Dates of corrections, if any, are also included. Most of the charts date from the publication date of 1832 to the present

The second portion of Part Three consists of a table followed by a graphic index map of

Ireland which will assist the researcher in locating place names used in the B.A. chart titles along various sections of the Irish coast.
