How to Download and Install R and R-Studio

Introduction: R is a free software for statistical computing and graphics. Its learning curve is a bit steep. But, fortunately for us, there also exists R-Studio. R-Studio is a user interface that allows the user to run R in an environment that is much more friendly, especially for new users. In this course, we will be using R from within R-Studio. Before you begin: Downloading and installing R and R-Studio is in two parts. R must be downloaded and installed first (Part I). Only then can R-Studio be downloaded and installed (Part II).

PART I (Must be done first) – Download and Install R #1. Go to the R Project Home page www.r-project.org. You should see the following. In the center, under “Getting Started”, at right, click on the link, download R.



#2. You should now see a long listing of “CRAN Mirrors” (CRAN = “Comprehensive R Archive Network”). Scroll down to see those for the country, USA. Choose and click on a CRAN Example – I chose the CRAN at UCLA (http://cran.stat.ucla.edu) .

#3. Depending on what type of computer you have (Windows or MAC), click on appropriate link. This will be either Download R for (MAC) OS X or Download R for Windows.

MAC Users - skip now to page 5… WINDOWS Users Will See #4 (WINDOWS Users) Click at right, install R for the first time.



For WINDOWS Users - continued #5. Click on Download R.3.1.2 for Windows

Follow the prompts to do a standard installation.

Dear Windows users –Sorry, I don’t have any more instructions after this, as I am a MAC user.



WINDOWS Users - skip to page 6… MAC Users Will See #4 (a) Before you download – Check your version of OS X before downloading your R installation package. To do this, click on the apple icon at the upper left ! “About this MAC” (b) Click on the appropriate R installation package Example – My version number of OS X is 10.9.5 Therefore, I clicked on the 2nd download, “R-3.1.2-mavericks.pkg” Tip – You may need to wait a bit for the download to finish.

For MAC Users #5. Your installation package should look like the picture below. Double click and follow the prompts to do a standard installation.



PART II – Download and Install R-Studio #1. Go to the R-Studio home page at www.rstudio.org. You should see the following. Click on Download RStudio

#2. From the Download RStudio page, scroll down to see the following. Click, at left, on DOWNLOAD R STUDIO DESKTOP



#3. You should see lots of installers to choose from (see below). See under, “Under Installers for ALL Platforms” Click on the platform installer than corresponds to your computer. Follow instructions. Example – I am a MAC user with OS X version 10.9.5 I clicked on RStudio 0.98.1091- MAC OS X 10.6+

For MAC Users #4. As with the download of R, the download of RStudio might take a bit. (a) Your installation package should look like the picture below. Double click on the installation package (picture shown below) (b) Follow the prompts to do a standard installation.



For MAC Users – continued. #4 – continued

(a) After double-clicking on the installation package, you should see the following window (1st picture below), showing an RStudio icon and an Applications Folder (actually, an alias)

(b) Drag the RStudio icon to its immediate left and drop it into the Applications Folder (alias) You can close this window now. (note – the arrow shown is mine. cb)

(c) Next, open your applications folder and scroll down to verify that the RStudio.app is there. (2nd picture below)

For MAC Users – continued. #5 – Finish.

(a) Last but not least! Optionally, drag the RStudio.app to your dock.

(b) All done! You can now drag the ”RStudio_098.1091.dmg” installer to the trash.
