Character songs give opportunity for singing, drama and dance. Students enjoy acting out thecharacters and moving to the music. Simple movement teaches coordination and rhythm, getsthe brain revved up for learning, is good for vocal health, and addresses the kinesthetic learner.Incorporate simple props (baseball hat, plastic bat) and choose actors to “be” that character,leading the rest of the class in the movement.

QUINCY QUARTER NOTE

Learn: "Quincy Quarter Note" song. Use Note Family and Friends recording.

Quincy’s song is written in all quarter notes,giving students opportunity to see, hear andfeel his notes. This approach is used insongs for each Land of Music character.Notice the lyrics. They reinforce the musictheory concepts. Setting concepts to musicmakes them easier to learn and retain.

Quincy Quarter Note as Beatsetter.When you see the numbers in the first room of a songhouse, those numbers tell

you what kind of a songhouse it is. The top number tells you how many counts orbeats are in each room of a songhouse. The bottom number tells you who thebeatsetter is. When you see a 4 as the bottom number, you will know that I, QuincyQuarter Note, am the beatsetter. That means my quarter notes each get one beat orcount every time they appear in a songhouse room. A large C ( ) in the first room ofa songhouse also means 44 time. You will hear my beat setter story in Series 2, Unit 5.

Associating the bottomnumber of a time signaturewith a Land of Musiccharacter helps childrenremember what a timesignature “tells” them.

Movement suggestions:March in place from measures 1 through 8 placing your hands over your head with finger tips touching to

form a kind of house. On measure 9, point to yourself. On measures 10 and 11, turn around and walk in a circlecounter-clockwise and hold up four fingers when singing about Quincy. On measures 12 and 13, walk in a circleand hold up two fingers when singing about Helen. On measures 14 and 15, walk in another circle. On measure16, put right hand out toward the audience, and on measure 17, hold index finger in the air when singing aboutWillie.

The Note Family lives in the Land of Music. They build songhouses. When theyfinish a songhouse, they send it to the Land of People, where you live! Songhousesbecome songs in the Land of People.

The Note Family has many friends in the Land of Music. The Rest Family, Little Dot,Monroe Moon, Twink, and Wink all help the Note Family build songs. And of course, sodo I. I’m very important in the Land of Music.

There are many different songhouses in the Land of Music, just like there aredifferent kinds of houses in the Land of People. All of these different songhouses becomethe many different kinds of songs you hear in the Land of People.

The Land of Music is filled with exciting places to visit. You can travel to RockMountain and visit the Rock and Roll Castle. It's always a fun place!

Or, you can have a foot-stomping time in Country County. While you are there, youmight see Gunther Guitar and Old Bell, the cow. She makes the most delicious cheese!

If you visit Symphony City, you’ll meet many instruments, including Mello Cello andHanna Harp. You’ll also see Bartok Baton working to help the instruments.

You can even visit Jazz Town. When you go, Ella Jazzella will sing you a song. She'sone of my favorite singers!

And of course, it’s always fun to play at the Land of Amusicment Park. Take a ridearound the park on Follies Trolley, then slide down Fiddle Falls or spin on the WarpedRecord Ride.

We send songhouses to the Land of People where they become songs. My dad, WillieWhole Note, and my mom, Helen Half Note, own the Treble-Bass ConstructionCompany.

When I’m not building songhouses, I play baseball at Stan Musical Field. CoachKettle Drum is the coach of our team, the Treble Clef Titans.

I play baseball with Tommy Trumpet, Floyd Flute and sometimes, Jeff Moore. He’sfrom the Land of People. Last year, our team won first place in the Land of Musicbaseball series. That was exciting!

Did I tell you that I have two sisters? Their names are Ellie Eighth Note and SusieSixteenth Note. They are always trying to play with my pet, Pa-Pa Parrot. That's OK withme, unless baby Susie pulls on his tail feathers, then I have to rescue Pa-Pa and put himin his cage.
