uring my four years at Parsons The New School for Design, I have been influenced by my peers. I have been inspired by their style, their sophisticated opinions in class, their out-looks on life, and the amazing art projects they create. After

observing and admiring the talents of friends and classmates, I recog-nized that I belong to a truly significant generation. We have grown up with computers, the Internet, and other new technologies that have empowered us to interact with the world in new ways. We are deeply im-mersed in a new global culture, where the bounds of time and place no longer affect the information we have access to. For these reasons, we are adaptable, communicative, and eager to impact the world.

After reading an article in The Boston Globe that labeled today’s youth as the “Entitlement Generation,” I was curious to find out how my peers would define themselves. With that direction in mind, I compiled a sur-vey consisting of 14 brief questions. For the purpose of this project, I chose to consider today’s generation as people born between 1985 and 1995. Networking through friends, I surveyed 137 individuals over the course of one month.

Upon receiving the first several responses, I was excited by the quality of what was being shared. I remember sitting at the kitchen table with my family, looking through the pages of interviews, and not being able to put them down. Some answers were serious and some were sarcastic, many were humorous, and others uplifting. My desire was to feature the interviews as creatively as possible to bring out the unique viewpoints of each individual.

My visual style combines line drawings, vintage imagery, paint, digital art, original photography, magazine clippings, typography, and collage. Through distinct use of color, texture, and space, I hope this book will serve as a voice for the young people who are featured. Whether you feel inspired, hopeful, or amused after reading “Bright,” I hope you will gain a fresh perspective on today’s generation.

One thing that stands out to me about our generation is that it’s dealing with so much constant change, whether it’s with technology or just the way of life. I’m not sure if I could call it unparalleled yet, but I think in another decade it may be.

I personally do not feel that I am hard on myself, but definitely am witness to many who are. I think that the standards set on today’s youth are high, but that people are often misguided. The standards do not necessarily appeal to the actual wants, desires, and passions of young people, which is a major problem.

I feel like in order to succeed in today’s world, you have to hold yourself to high standards—no matter what that means. The standards themselves are individual, but I think it’s important that everyone have goals because without something to reach for, the present becomes unimportant.

I think we have to hold ourselves to high standards if we want to succeed and achieve our goals, but on the other hand, I think the standards we have to live up to, in some ways, are not near as high or hard as they have been in the past. Our generation has a new wave of wanting to be productive in changing people’s lives and I think those who are focused on that hold themselves to a very high standard.

I’m very hard on myself. But that’s how we better ourselves, by never being complacent with the work we’ve done. There is always a new way to go at a problem. That’s the best way to learn, I think, by always assuming there is a better way.
