A native o Turkey, Baris Gokturk describes his experience at Parsons as

cosmopolitan and international. I not only met people rom all over the

world but also worked with them in my classes. Baris explored a number

o areas o design beore deciding that ne arts is his true passion. He

says, The aculty was so supportive when I switched rom Illustration

to Integrated Design Curriculum and then to Fine Arts. By allowing me

to try dierent elds, they helped me realize that what I really want to do

    is paint.

Today painting is exactly what Baris does. For his junior-year intern-

ship, a standard part o the Fine Arts program, Baris worked withsculptor Jeanne Silverthorne. He currently works with painter Fabian

Marcaccio while studying or his MFA in painting. I am working on a

series o paintings about the intangibility o inormation versus

knowledge. In my paintings, I work with sets o words whose meaning

is becoming more and more ambiguous because o overuse and deliber-

ate political misuse. Baris uses images, ound mainly through Google,

to create collages representing reconsidered meanings o the words.

I aim or a chewed-up, worn-o pictorial zone in which the mean-

ing is stripped o the word, the image is stripped o meaning, painting

is stripped o painting, and so on. This way, every aspect o the work

becomes paradoxical yet its raison detre becomes meaningul.

Martina and I have always had similar ideas about design and

aesthetics, Amanda Toles says o Martina Sencakova, with whom she

collaborated on a thesis project. Martina agrees, adding, Working with

Amanda was easier than working by mysel. Every time I would come to a

halt, she would bring the project into ocus, allowing it to move orward.

Martina and Amanda redesigned The New Schools building at 25

East 13th Street applying principles o sustainability. Our ocus was

on increasing natural light and ventilation. We did so by carving two

light wells into the building that could change depending on weather

conditions. In moderate weather, the interior skin o the space wouldopen, allowing complete natural airfow, while in winter the space acts

as a buer between exterior and interior conditions. The spaces also

brought natural light deep into the building through refective suraces.

Although both students describe the curriculum as intense, they

would not trade their experience at Parsons or any other. Martina says,

You learn so much more than technical skills. I have become more

responsible, organized, and willing to go beyond the expected, and

because o the small classes, the relationships you establish are truly one

o a kind. Amanda adds, The workload is intense, but i you manage

your time, it is completely doable. I learned how to think through a

problem, apply mysel creatively, and work eciently.

Michael Hoefers interests range rom painting to jewelry making.

He says, I came to Parsons as a Fine Arts student because it is known

not only or design but or social responsibility as well. I switched to

Product Design because it is anti-elitist. The things we design are useul

    to everyone.

Michaels thesis project, bounce Baby Sign Products, refects

both his commitment to social responsibility and his knowledge o

product design. The project has special personal signicance or

Michael, the son o dea parents. He explains, Many dea children have

hearing parents who only know how to communicate orally. Parentsdont learn sign language because it is oreign and they are given only an

institutional approach to it. I wanted to take everyday necessities and

toys, such as baby blankets and building blocks, and add American Sign

Language and illustrations to them to introduce sign language to

parents and to give both hearing and nonhearing children a method o

    preverbal communication.

For Justin Shoji, the Design and Management program was ideal,

oering him fuency in both the business and ashion worlds. I can

crunch numbers and analyze spreadsheets, and I also appreciate

creativity and design concepts. Although Justin developed many o

these skills in the classroom, his experiences as an intern proved equally

important in helping him choose a career.

As a reshman and sophomore, Justin interned at Fashion File TV,

where he worked on broadcasts o events during New York Fashion

Week. He also explored the world o event planning as an intern at Mark

Stephen Enterprises. But Justins avorite internship, arranged with helprom Parsons instructor Steve Lindner, was at Diesel. There he joined

the womens wholesale group and gained incomparable hands-on

experience. I was able to assist in appointments with buyers and attend

trade shows. Theres nothing better than seeing rsthand how things

operate. Ater graduating, Justin parlayed this internship into a

ull-time job, and today he is happily employed as a customer service

    representative or Diesel.

I am interested in developing educational structures that allow students

to eel ree and to understand their own power and possibilities, says

Integrated Design Curriculum instructor Pascale Gatzen. In her courses,

Gatzen ensures that her students have abundant opportunities to grow

not only as designers but also as individuals. I want my students to test

the intersection between ashion and reality. Do their designs work?

How do people react to the clothing they have made? Testing, making,

and doing are very important. We perorm in our clothes. I want students

to be present, to grow with their work as human beings.

Gatzen believes that actually making clothing is essential orstudents training to become ashion designers. In the core Integrated

Fashion Curriculum class, taken by sophomores in the all, students

develop a creative and critical approach to ashion. They learn by

experimenting and playing with clothes that are worn in everyday lie.

By exploring things that attract them culturally or historically, or

example, students make garments or themselves once a week.

Through a collaborative project between New School students and

Ajkema Loya, a womens cooperative in Guatemala, Gatzen has taken

her approach to both ashion and education abroad. The students sharetheir knowledge o business, marketing, and product design with the

Guatemalan women. In return, the Guatemalan women teach the stu-

dents beading, dyeing threads, pattern making, and weaving. The

goal is or the collective to create products o their choosing and to

    operate without external support.

Duncan Smith came to Parsons to study design and liberal arts. As a

graduating senior, he has ullled his goal, earning a combined degree

in Writing and Integrated Design Curriculum. Beautiully rendered

illustrations inormed by ancient Mexican art spill rom the pages o his

thesis project, a short graphic novel based on the true story o a Mexican

worker in New York City. Duncan explains the inspiration or this project:

In my rst year, I took Community Organizing at Eugene Lang College

as part o my BA studies in the dual degree program, and I became

entwined with a nonprot group dedicated to workers rights. Thats

where I met Sergio, and I modeled the main character in my graphicnovel ater him. Still committed to promoting workers rights, Duncan

continued working with the group ater the class ended. He hopes that

his thesis project will advance this cause by shedding light on the

working Mexican population in New York, which is oten invisible.

Even with his diploma in hand, Duncan will have no time to relax: He

has received a contract to write and illustrate a childrens book about the

experiences o two Mexican cousins, one living in New York City and the

    other living in Mexico.

Duncan says one o the great things about Parsons is that a loto proessors are people in the eld right now. He plans to continue

writing and illustrating, looking orward to becoming one o their peers.

Maya Sariahmed says she came to Parsons by accident. I wasnt

considering art school. I wanted to go to a liberal arts college and get a

well-rounded education. I looked into Parsons out o curiosity, and when

    I visited the Communication Design department, my decision was made;

there was something pragmatic that appealed to me and my parents, and

the energy o the sta was wonderul.

Ater two years in the program, Maya knows that her decision was

the right one. I love the broad curriculum; theres so much I can do. I

can study book or publication design, motion or spatial graphics, or

example. I love art but dont want to be pushing a portolio in Chelsea.Communication Design is a little more practical, but its wonderul or

whimsical, collaborative, crazy, experimental projects, too.

Maya is particularly happy studying in New York City. Everything

that happens in the art world seems to nd its roots here, whether youre

in Dumbo investigating the Puppet Lab, strolling through the labyrinth

o photo and ne art galleries in Chelsea, enjoying the murals in Harlem,

or perusing the works o the masters in some o the worlds greatest

    museums. Art is absolutely everywhere.

    case studies

Students explore a variety o design

elds and learn to use design as a tool

or change, or example in the eld o

    environmental sustainability. In Senior

    Seminar and Thesis classes, students

    work independently on case studies,

which include a project brie, poster,

website, oral or digital presentation, and

ormal paper. These nal projects allow

    students to display original thinking

backed by solid research. Past project

topics include designing a street ashion

website, accessing clean water in Haiti, improving the subway riders experi-

ence, and addressing the issue o student

    credit card debt.

    ieldwork

    Students pursuing an environmental

studies degree use New York City and the

    surrounding region as their laboratory.

You apply what you learn in the class-

    room to real-world problems through

    eldwork with local organizations,

    government agencies, and businesses.

    You work with leading environmental

    proessionals to design experiments,

    collect data, develop prototypes, and

    implement projects that address

    urgent urban environmental problems.

Fieldwork in the second or third yearorms the basis or a senior project.

Recent eldwork has taken students to

the marshes o Jamaica Bay, green roos

in the South Bronx, and the banks o the

    Hudson River.
