Having trouble with this year’s holiday gift selection?

You may choose to have the Foundation mail the card to them or you can have the card sent to you so you can put a personal note on it. And best of all, you can charge your donation to a credit or debit card at the Foundation’s website.

To find out more, go to www.parrishfoundation.com or call Ben Jordan at 776-9019. Supporting the Parrish Foundation’s Grant Fund helps charitable organiza-tions continue to supply services to the Parrish community and supporting those less fortunate is what GREAT COMMUNITIES DO!!

Have someone in your fam-ily who is hard to buy a Christmas gift for? Need a really unique gift that helps those in need? How about making a donation in their name to The Parrish Founda-tions Grant Fund? It’s a gift that will be used to support charitable organizations serving the Parrish community, and the person named in the gift will receive a beautiful card informing them that you have made a donation in his name.

News about the Chili Cook Off

The committee working on the Chili Cook off fundraiser has been very busy and announced last week that Billy Rice and his band will headline the entertainment at the event. If you are a fan of the band, you know what a great show they put on and if you have never heard them before, you are in for a real treat. There are several other exciting things the committee is working on to entertain the kids – more on that next month.

Sign up’s to be a team in the Chili Cook Off are coming in, and we are adding the ability to put the entry fee on a credit card at the web site www.parrishchili.com . All spots for the teams are good, but some are better, so the committee handling the placement of the teams has decided to hold an initial drawing for spaces on De-cember 1st. This gives teams signing up first the best chance for one of the more preferred spots. In addition to drawing for spots, there will be a drawing for a gift card from Publix to help pay for your chili ingredients.

All teams who have paid their entry fees by November 30th will be eligible for these two drawings, so get your team together and get your entry fee in. Remember that all proceeds from the event will go to The Parrish Foundation’s Grant Fund which is used to support charitable groups that serve the Parrish community. So get involved and support a great cause – and come out and have some fun.

Event chairman Ron Kutinsky is still looking for volunteers to help with the event. If you can help, just call him at 941-806-7550 or email him at [email protected].

When I reach November of each year, I stop (briefly) and pause to reflect on the many blessings that I have:

I live in a great community where the people are generous and give their time, money and efforts to make our community better.

I have an opportunity to be the edi-tor of the Parrish Village News). It gives me a tremendous opportunity to meet so many wonderful people in our commu-nity - both residents and business people. I feel so good about this paper and seeing it progress from a fledging 4-page paper to its 32-page product now. (At first, I wondered if we would make enough rev-enue to pay for the printing, postage and mailing service that it required.)

I can make a difference in how our community progresses and those people who have like interests.

I get to shop when I want, cook when I want, read when I want and write when I want.

I get to take advantage of the many opportunities by volunteering where my skills can help an organization. A case in point is helping get the new library in El-lenton/Parrish and anxiously awaiting its grand opening on November 16 or help-ing to organize the Chili Cook Off which will take place in conjunction with Heri-tage Day 2012 on March 10.

I retraced the history of the Par-rish Village News from its first publica-tion in March 1994 to the present day. In reading every issue, you could trace the chronological history of Parrish. One of the editorials in the paper read, “With this first issue of the Parrish News, should we not think about the future of our community? There are issues that are going to appear that could change our good, quiet, historical and agricultural community. If we take the time and try to guide change, perhaps we can build a better historic Parrish. With the potential that the Florida Gulf Coast Railroad and Museum presents, many will visit our community. With the rebuilding of US Highway 301 north, many more will see our community. With the location that Parrish is fortunate to have, much build-ing will occur and ti will bring people; there are already more people in sight. With all this we can (and must) contrib-ute to keeping Parrish the agriculturally oriented, quiet community for the future. Let’s all work together to do this through the Parrish Civic Association!

Our community and its goals have hardly changed from that beginning in 1994. The same concerns the communi-ty faced then are still with us and our sur-veys say that people still want the same kind of community. It’s reassuring!

God Loves YouMore Than You May Think

Another Reason WhyYOU SHOULD BE A CHRISTIAN

God made man superior to all His creations even to His angels. He gave us eyes to enjoy His handi-work, hands to work with His world, a mind that can think and reeason, the ability to love and be loved, and the ability to choose between right and wrong. He even gave knowledge of himself to mankind through His Bible. And above all He gave all men who recognized and appreciate Him through Chris-tian living the opportunity to live forever. Doesn’t God merit our very best?

The effect of networkingTheresa Gilleard, Vice President, Parrish Professionals

Cooking with CookieSoups for fall and then some!

With Thanksgiving approaching and cooler weather coming, I think it’s time to think about making some good soups. Whether you like them light or hearty, here are a few of my favorites,

Clam Chowder3 (6.5 ounce) cans minced clams1 cup onion, minced1 cup celery, diced2 cups potatoes, cubed1 cup carrots, diced3/4 cup butter3/4 cup all-purpose flour1 quart half and half cream2 Tbsp. red wine vinegar1 1/2 tsp. saltGround black pepper

Drain juice from clams into a large skillet over the onions, celery, pota-toes and carrots. Add water to cover and cook over medium heat until tender. Meanwhile, in a large, heavy saucepan, melt the butter over medi-um heat. Whisk in flour until smooth. Whisk in cream and stir constantly until thick and smooth. Stir in vegeta-bles and clam juice. Heat through, but do not boil. Stir in clams just before serving. If they cook too much they will get tough. When clams are heat-ed through, stir in vinegar and season with salt and pepper.

Yield: 8 servings.

BLT Soup3 Tbsp. butter2 tsp. vegetable oil3 cups French bread, cubed1 pound sliced bacon, diced2 cups celery, finely chopped1 onion, finely chopped2 Tbsp. sugar6 Tbsp. all-purpose flour5 cups chicken broth1 (16-ounce) jar picante sauce1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce1/8 tsp. pepper3 cups lettuce, shredded

In a Dutch oven or large saucepan, heat butter and oil over medium heat. Add the bread cubes; stir until crisp and golden brown. Remove and set aside. In the same pan, cook bacon until crisp. Drain, reserving 1/4 cup drippings; set bacon aside. Saute cel-ery and onion in drippings until ten-der. Add sugar; cook and stir for 1 minute. Stir in flour; cook and stir for 1 minute. Add broth, picante sauce, tomato sauce and pepper; bring to a boil. Boil and stir for 2 minutes. Just before serving, add lettuce and heat through. Garnish with the croutons

and bacon.

Yield: 8 servings.

Tomato Soup1 (29-ounce) can diced tomatoes1 (10.5-ounce) can condensed

chicken broth, undiluted2 Tbsp. butter2 Tbsp. white sugar1 Tbsp. onion, chopped1/4 tsp. baking soda2 cups heavy whipping cream

In a large stock pot, mix tomatoes, chicken broth, butter, sugar, onion and baking soda. Simmer for 1 hour. In a double boiler heat cream until hot. You can also do this in a regular saucepan over low heat, but watch it carefully so that the cream does not scorch! Once heated through, add to the tomato soup and serve.

Yield: 10 servings.

Cheesy Potato Soup2 Tbsp. butter1 cup onion, diced1 1/2 cups potatoes, peeled and diced3 cups chicken broth1 cup heavy cream1 3/4 cups sharp Cheddar cheese,

shredded1/4 tsp. dried dill weed1/4 tsp. ground black pepper1/4 tpsp. salt1/8 tsp, ground cayenne pepper

In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt butter. Cook onion in butter un-til softened. Stir in potatoes and broth and bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat and simmer 15 to 20 minutes until po-tatoes are tender. Puree potato mix-ture in a blender. Return to pot over medium heat. Stir in cream, cheese, dill, pepper, salt and cayenne. Bring to a low boil and cook, stirring until thickened, 5 minutes.

Yield: 6 servingsBon Appetit!

your friends, too. Did you know that we have an in-home companion/homemaker service by active seniors who want to help other seniors stay independent? What a concept! Who better to understand what it means as you get older and some of your independence is taken away? Marlene McKeefrey, the Branch Manager, has 25 years of Nursing Management. That speaks volumes in the Networking World. Her com-pany, Caregivers For Seniors, Inc. keeps seniors independent. She can be reached at 776-3299 or check out the web site at www.caregiversforseniors.com.

We also met, Beth Ann Elsberry with Premier Designs. That’s right, even though I am also a Premier Designs Jewelry Lady, it doesn’t mean that we can’t network together. We have totally different personalities and exposure to many different types of people. There is always enough for everyone. Besides, Premier Designs teaches us to run our business on biblical principles and to serve others. I look forward to helping Beth Ann grow and prosper. She is available at 729-0075.

Then in walks Karen Pfeiffer with Keller Williams. I love her business card that states, Realtor “by Choice.” Now, that tells me she loves what she does. Karen displayed such confidence not only in how she presented herself but also in the abil-ity to meet the needs of others. Even though our country may be experiencing some economic stresses, Karen was so positive about the market and how she could work it for you. Her contact information is 747-2171, [email protected].

Another great fit was Manatee Apparel Graphics. We met Dennis and Linda Frey who provide promotional products, embroidery and screen printing. Hello . . . get your business name on something and get it out there! Let people know who you are and what you do. With the holidays coming up, start thinking of an item that could be given to your clients to show how much you appreciate their loyalty to your business. If they have the choice to hire anyone, set yourself apart so they hire YOU! Give them a call and set it up, 746-6353.

Last is Ilona Maegdefrau with Sun Horse Farm. She provides lessons, boarding, dressage, jumping and eventing. She also holds a German Master’s Degree. If that wasn’t impressive enough, let me tell you what is . . . when you speak to Ilona about horses, her eyes light up and the most beautiful smile is on her face. She has such a passion for what she does and wants so much to share that with you. She shared a story with me about one of her rescue ponies which is actually a miniature stallion. With love and attention, Primus, (as she named him) is doing wonderfully and is very happy at the Sun Horse Farm right off Jim Davis Road. Adults and children of all ages should check this out. Spend a few moments or a few hours enjoying the peaceful setting of pastures, the beautiful oak trees and a romantic creek in the back 12 acres. Ilona would love to talk to you more about it at 776-1134.

So, as you can see, there are plenty of networking opportunities in November. Don’t miss an opportunity to refer a “business friend” to someone you know. They may never have the chance to meet without your referral.

Visit with us the third Thursday of every month at the Parrish Y, upstairs. Meet and Greet at 6:30 p.m., meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. Contact Jackie Felix, President at 504-2376 for more information.

I have found that once you see the first hint of oversized candy bags on the end cap at the grocery store, the holidays are upon us. That means if we were not busy enough before, we will be adding many more things to our already “too much to do list”! Those of us in Parrish Professionals are no exception!

We had a wonderful Open House event tht allowed us to meet many new “business friends.” I promised I would introduce them to you so that they could be

If the number of trucks in front of the new Rocky Bluff Library indicates anything, it shows the amount of labor going on inside and outside the building.

The shelving units are in place, new carpet installed, the check out desk completed and painting throughout the building is beautiful. Work continues in the staff area and conference room. Books are scheduled to be moved from the old location to the new one during the first week in November.

The Grand Opening is also set for Wednesday, No-vember 16, 2012 at 12:00 p.m. This beautiful facility will be ready for all the community to see and begin us-ing. Manatee County has done a terrific job to provide this wonderful new library for our part of the county.

Outside the new sign is up and messages will inform the community of events scheduled at the library. Addi-tionally, the area behind the library has been cleared so that staff workers can go outside for lunch or a break and see the beautiful wetlands behind the build-ing. The footbridge has been repaired and is beautiful and the parking lot will soon be improved.

You can still support the library by contributing to the fund raising cam-paign. As the opening nears, there are still some needs that the Friends of Rocky Bluff would like to fulfill, The levels of giving are:

Diamond - $5,000Platinum - $1000 to $4,999

Ellenton-Parrish Lions Clubparticipates in the

White Cane Safety Walk

Pictured are a few of the Ellenton-Parrish Lions Club members aiding the White Cane users in Downtown Bradenton.

For the sighted, white canes have come to symbolize the loss of vision. For the blind, the white cane is a means of maintaining mobility and independence. In 1930, George Bonham, President of the Peoria, Illinois Lions Club, witnessed a problem with a blind man trying to cross a busy street. Realizing that drivers were unaware of the man’s impairment, Lion George’s answer was to paint the cane white with a band of red around it. The Peoria Lions received approval from the City Council and canes were painted and given to the blind in the city. During the 1940’s, techniques for using the cane were improved and by 1956 every state in the USA had passed White Cane Safety Laws that gave any individual using a cane at a crossing the right of way. In 1964 President Lyndon Johnson issued a proclamation that makes the White Cane officially recognized.

On Thursday, October 13, 2011, despite the intermittent rain, there were nine members of the Ellenton-Parrish Lions Club who participated in the White Cane Safety Walk held at Old Main Street, Bradenton. It started at the bus stop at Manatee Avenue and Old Main Street and ended at the Bradenton City Hall.

Others who helped with the walk were Southeastern Guide Dogs, Manasota Lighthouse for the Blind, Division of Blind Services, Manatee County Council of the Blind and Lions Clubs International.

Proclamations were read by the Mayor of Bradenton and a member of the Mana-tee County Commissioners.

White Cane Safety means that drivers must comply with Florida Statutes 752.52 Sec.2.

(1) A driver of a vehicle shall not approach a crosswalk or any other pedestrian crossing without taking all necessary precautions to avoid accident or injury to a blind pedestrian carrying a cane or using a guide dog.

(2) A driver who approaches a crosswalk or any other pedestrian crossing with-out taking all necessary precautions to avoid accident or injury to a blind pedestrian carrying a cane or using a guide dog shall be liable in damages for any injuries caused the blind pedestrian.

Also, section 752.53 Sec. 3.A person who violates section 2. (1) is guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by

imprisonment for not more than 90 days, or by a fine of not more than $100 or both.Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organization. There

are 1.35 million members in more than 46,000 clubs worldwide. Lions are every-where. They are active men and women in more than 206 countries and geographic areas. For information about the Ellenton-Parrish Lions Club, please call our Mem-bership Chairman at 941-722-9388.

It hardly seems possible that Ferrao’s is celebrating its 2nd anniversary in Parrish, but it’s a fact! Just two short years ago, Frank LoGrande opened his second restaurant in this area (the first is located on 14th Street in Bradenton).

Come celebrate this momentous occasion at Ferraro’s on Monday, Novem-ber 7, 2011 - all day long - where 1 large pizza with one topping is ONLY $8.00! You won’t want to miss this bargain and celebratory day.

And if this anniversary isn’t enough, Ferraro’s has just opened its third restau-rant - Ferraro’s Italian Restaurant in Lakewood Ranch at the corner of SR 64 and Lakewood Ranch Boulevard. Stop by and try the new restaurant out. The menu is similar, but there are some different dishes served at this new restaurant. Also, the restaurant has wood-fired ovens for baking - the authentic Italian ones. You’ll want to try the pizzas out there.

Ferraro’s is committed to being a part of the Parrish community and sponsors many events in the community. One event coming up on Saturday, Noember 12, 2011 is a Blood Drive at Ferraro’s. It starts and 11:00 a.m. and lasts to 3:00 p.m. Rollup your sleeve and come on by. All donors will receive a free personal pizza and soda. Florida Blood Services is also giving all donors a chance to win a 2012 KIA Soul courtesy of Friendly Kia if you give blood prior to February 2012. All blood donors will also receive a dome lid cup, a wellness checkup and a cholesterol screen-ing just for rolling in and donating blood. (You can give blood every 56 days.)

The LoGrande Pizza Eating Challenge is also continuing. Here’s the deal: there can be two challengers per pie; the pizza is 28 inches in diameter with five toppings; you must eat it within 40 minutes and if you do, it is FREE; plus you win a $25 Gift Certificate from Ferraro’s. If you are hungry and have a “buddy” who wants to team up with you, come on in and try the challenge.

Egmont Key will be presented atManatee County Historical Society

Manatee County Historical Society, (founded in 1946 and covering the whole coun-ty) will meet at noon on Wednesday, November 16, 2011, at Renaissance on 9th (Meals on Wheels Center) located at 1816 9th Street West in Bradenton.

At their November luncheon meeting, Society member Don Thompson who has 34 years experience teaching Social Studies and 11 years as historical interpreter will speak to the group about Egmont Key, “The Little Island With A Big History.” From pre-Co-lumbian natives to the present day use as a nature preserve and home of the Tampa Bay Pilots and with old maps and narratives, anecdotes and illustrations, he tells the history of early Spanish exploration and Egmont Key in the Seminole Wars and Civil War. Once home to 300 people, today the island’s main inhabitants are gopher turtles and sea birds.

Accessible only by private boat, Egmont Key has a unique natural and cultural his-tory, including a lighthouse that has stood since 1858. In 1898, as the Spanish - American War threatened, Fort Dade was built on the island and remained active until 1923.

The luncheon costs $15.00. Please make reservations ASAP. Call Liz Boling at 941-748-5788 or Lorraine Tetlus at 941-748-6694. For more information contact Pamela N. Gibson at [email protected] or call 941-778-1594 (home) or 941-748-5555, exten-sion # 6309 or #6310 (work).

What is it about November that makes us feel extraordinarily charita-ble? Could it be the sounds and smells wafting from neighborhood restaurants? Maybe it’s the cinnamon brooms in the grocery store aisles or the slight crisp-ness to the Florida air. The child in all of us remembers those special holidays with family and friends. We want that for others.

My office is never in short supply of donation opportunities. From scouts and sports to cancer awareness, homeless initiatives, political causes and so much more, the need is endless. We try our best to help those we can, but the decision-making is never easy. Our hearts break when we hear about dislocated families, young children living in their cars or older folks who can’t afford to fill much needed prescription orders.

This year we’ll see the need increase into the millions as more Americans suffer from joblessness, mortgage foreclosure and illness. In fact, 2011 has an entire new group of people that are reaching out for some kind of financial help. Our agents are especially in tune to the amount of need in our community. We deal daily with those that have never before asked for a helping hand. Many proud men and women who have worked their entire lives are now depending on their children to make ends meet. Young families are moving back in with their parents, and some have nowhere to go at all. We encounter many stories and each reminds us to appreciate what we have and do what we can to help others.

Throughout the year, our agents help us to determine which charities would ben-efit most from our contributions. Collectively, we provide not only money, but our time and our hopefulness as well. We collect toys for the kids, socks and underwear for grownups and canned goods for the food pantries. The things we take for granted are often the very things so many in need hope to have.

As Thanksgiving approaches and the crisp air sends your memories soaring, think of how delicious a full meal can taste. Think of how wonderful it is to play a quick game of football in the backyard. Think of how special it is to cuddle up in a warm blanket because you want to, not because you have to. If you can afford it, consider purchasing a turkey for a struggling family. Consider donating some of your BOGO grocery deals to a food bank. Remember charity has no timeframe or time limit. Like they say, “It’s the little things that make a difference.”

Happy Thanksgiving from Leslie Wells Realty.

Celebrate agriculture during Farm City WeekIn Manatee County, agriculture is big … really big. It’s so big that there’s an

entire week dedicated to celebrating and raising public awareness of the importance of agriculture to this community.

Annual agricultural production is estimated at over 500 million dollars and is second only to tourism in its economic impact to Manatee County. This ranks Mana-tee County in the top ten Florida counties for agricultural sales. Some of the main agricultural industries in the county are vegetable production (including tomatoes, potatoes, cabbage and strawberries), citrus, livestock and forage production, orna-mental horticulture, commercial fishing and forest products.

The Manatee County Farm City Week program began in 1967 to promote a clear understanding of the economic importance of agriculture in Manatee County and the effect of urbanization on agricultural lands. Folks can participate in a number of ways, included a guided bus tour of select agricultural operations, the Cortez Village Folk Art Fishing Festival, the Faye Blackstone Memorial Junior Ranch Rodeo, and much more!

Part of the week’s events is to honor individuals who have made a significant im-pact to agriculture and the agricultural community. Two honorees, for the Outstand-ing Agriculturalist of the Year and the Manatee County Agriculture Hall of Fame, will be recognized during the Kiwanis Club of Bradenton Farm City Week Luncheon on November 15th and at the Palmetto Historical Luncheon on November 17th, re-spectively.

This year’s Farm City Week runs from November 14th through the 19th and is filled with a diversity of events that will truly open your eyes to the past, present, and future of agriculture in Manatee County. The theme for 2011 is Rodeo: A Rancher’s Way of Life. A summary of the week’s events are listed below. For more informa-tion, call the number listed for a specific event or visit http://manatee.ifas.ufl.edu.

Farm City Week is a collaborative effort among several key stakeholders, includ-ing the Manatee County Agricultural Museum, Kiwanis Club of Bradenton, Manatee

Chapter of the Florida Farm Bureau, City of Palmetto, Manasota National Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), Florida A&M University, University of Florida IFAS Manatee County Extension, Florida Westcoast RC&D, Florida Cattlemen and Cattle Women and Manatee County agricultural producers.

Farm City Week runs fromNovember 14 through November 19.

Your friendly reminder service . . . that’s ME!

Jan KaufmanOver the last several months, we’ve talked about

Fire Safety, Home Safety and Security, Internet Secu-rity, and more. Quite a few of those articles were based on first-hand experiences I’ve gone through or prob-lems friends and family have endured over the years. We all learn from our experiences; yet, it’s far too easy to grow complacent because “it always happens to the other guy.” Don’t wait until that “other guy” is you.

So . . . here are some reminders:

1.) Smoke Detectors - With Daylight Savings Time, and changing our clocks, take out the ladder and change the batteries in your Smoke Detectors, too. The batteries you remove can be reused in other less important things and you’ll have another year knowing your smoke de-tectors are ready to help if you need them. Test them at the same time to make sure they are working properly.

2.) Fire Extinguishers - Do you have a Fire Extinguisher at home? Check the gauge and make sure it is showing in the Green Section. In addition, take the extinguisher and turn it upside down and back and listen to make sure you can hear the powder moving. Most home ex-tinguishers are filled with powder. By shaking them and turning them upside down and right side up you can usually hear the powder moving. If you leave them set for too long, the powder will settle and cake and will not be effective when you most need it. You will need to have the extinguisher replaced or recharged.

3.) Computer and Website Passwords - Have you changed your passwords on your computer lately? The passwords you use on your computer should be changed at least twice a year to help ensure no one can access any sites you normally use, especially sites where you purchase items, banking and credit card sites, and any site that could give away your personal information. Be sure to use a combination of letters and numbers as well as a combination of capital letters and symbols (such as &%?). By changing your passwords regularly, it will keep the hackers at bay. To help remember to reset your passwords later, go into your calendar on the day you change your passwords and put in a reminder several months down the road to change them again.

4.) Neighborhood email address lists - Do you live in a neighborhood that sends out emails to the homeowners and residents? Have you double checked to make sure they have your correct email address? Drop them a note to make sure they know how to get in touch with you if needed. You don’t want to miss out on that fabulous neighborhood event just because you forgot to send them your new email address or new phone number.

5.) Tire Pressure - Gas prices are on the rise and the cold weather is coming. One way to save a bit on gas is to make sure your tires are inflated properly. Check your tire pressures and make sure they are inflated properly. It’s a good idea to check them every so often anyway. By checking them you not only save a bit on gas but you will extend the life of the tires also.

6.) Alarm Systems – If you have an alarm system at home it’s wise to check it at least once a year to ensure everything is functioning properly. Contact your Alarm

Alarm Company and let them know you will be doing a test or talk to them about schedul-ing a test. At the same time check with them on the names and phone numbers they show on their contact list for your home. Make sure your lists are up to date.

7.) Watering Systems – When is the last time you checked your automatic watering systems (if you have one)? How often is it watering your lawn and for how long? Tempera-tures are starting to drop and it feels like fall. Is it time for you to adjust the timing on your system?

8.) Credit Reports – Your credit report should be reviewed at least once a year for mistakes, prob-lems, discrepancies, etc. There are a number of sites where you can get a free credit report. It’s important to review re-ports from all three agen-cies as their information may be quite different.

These are just some ideas to help get you started.

This has been a Pub-lic Service Announce-ment from your friendly reminder service – Me!

Enjoy Livin’.

Pastor Bill StraitwellMemories of Thanksgiving

These are some of the memories I have of when I was growing up. I write them down and share them with my family. I urge you, the reader to do the same - for your children, for your grandchildren, for posterity. How else will they know?

There were good memories though – a boiling pan on the stove held the neck, gizzard and heart of a turkey as Mother slowly cooked them so that they could be cut up and added to the gravy. The smell of apple, mince meat and pumpkin pies, fresh out of the oven, then placed on the Hoosier cabinet to cool.

Mother cooked the largest turkey we could find, because our family was large. Often we had venison - fresh deer meat, fried to a tender finish for our dinner as well.

The night before the big dinner we had all pitched in and pulled bread slices into small pieces for the stuffing. Also, we had clamped that old, leaky grinder onto the kitchen table and ground cran-berries and oranges for the cranberry sal-ad. That grinder was a worthless piece of junk, but it was all we had. Juice ran from it as fast as ground cranberries did into the bowl and we would put pots or pans around the grinder to catch it. Also, on the floor we put cookie pans to catch the leftover juice – the pans sat on news-paper. The end result: a sticky linoleum floor that had to be scrubbed. But the further end result was a wonderful tast-ing cranberry salad!

Dad would help by staying in the other room smoking cigars. Or working in his small shop reloading ammunition for himself and others. (I don’t think he smoked out there.) His workshop was separate from the house and in it he had various reloading equipment. Also he had drums and barrels of gun powder, enough to blow us to “kingdom come,” wherever that was. He often warned us kids not to go into the shop unless he was in there working, because we might blow ourselves to kingdom come. Fun-ny, I can so well hear him saying that.

When dinner was ready and the corn, mashed potatoes and gravy with the neck, gizzard, etc. ground up and put into it, we would all anxiously sit down for dinner. Mother would surely have been exhausted! Dad always said the blessing at the Thanksgiving dinner, and he was always truly thankful for every-thing we had. After all, Mother and Dad had survived the great depression and appreciated everything they had.

Can’t you just smell that dinner right now? The stuffing with the various spic-es, that huge turkey, the coleslaw and the pumpkin pie.

Speaking of pumpkins, someone sent this to me: Being a Christian is like being a pumpkin. God lifts you up, takes you in, and washes all the dirt off of you.

Please see Memories CONTINUED ON PAGE 29

As you read this, Halloween is nice-ly over and turkeys are already on sale. But before we talk turkey, I want to re-late this short story about my memories of October.

How I remember the smell of the fresh cut hay and straw on the hay wag-ons! Several bales of straw were broken up so that the wagon had a thick covering for comfort, and then a number of bales, still with binders twine holding them to-gether, were placed here and there on the wagon. The first year when our church youth group met at the church for our annual ride, we used two work horses to pull the wagon. After that we used a tractor.

One year an old Oldsmobile with several young boys in it harassed us, shining their bright lights on us, and throwing coke bottles at us. Our preach-er asked the tractor driver to stop by his house and we were ordered to get off and go to his apple tree and pick all the ap-ples we could handle. Then, once again we boarded the wagon. That Oldsmo-bile found us again, and after the first coke bottle was thrown at us, we pelted them with apples! That was the last time we saw of that old gray car. I think our preacher may not have believed in turn-ing the other cheek; rather he believed in an apple a day. Those boys can be thank-ful the preacher didn’t own a pumpkin patch!

It was always cool weather during our hay rides and jackets were needed. After a wonderful ride, we would meet at someone’s house and bob for apples with our hands behind our backs. One year, it was so cold we used someone’s large truck, which kept us out of the wind. It was in that truck that I got my first kiss. I was twelve years old and the girl was fourteen. Personally, I was shocked when she suggested kissing - she must have been desperate.

Naturally, we often dressed up in outfits depicting scary or weird charac-ters. Many of the kids had nice outfits, but our family did not have money for clothes that did not have use for school or church. How I remember one year – we couldn’t come up with a mask for me, but on the back of a cereal box was a cardboard mask you could cut out. So you just cut it out with scissors, cut holes for eyes and fastened a string around it to hold it onto your head. Everyone knew it was me right away. I was embarrassed by this, but that was the way it was back then. I wonder what gave my identity away. It was probably my laugh. Then came November:

It is so nice to live in Florida in No-

vember. We’ve lived here for over 20 years now and there has not been a No-vember that I wish I lived back in Penn-sylvania. Sure, there was the smell of fresh fallen leaves and when I was a kid, the making of pretend “smoking pipes” –

out of acorns. But with it, and as an adult it meant changing the anti-freeze in your car, putting on snow tires, making sure you had good working tire chains and a bag of salt in the trunk of your car preparing for the first snow.

get a few days every year that we get on the Reds and catch 50+ fish. This does not happen often but it does happen a few times every year at this time. On the trip I was on the other day, I found so amazing when we caught over 60 Reds. That’s not the unbelievable part. The thing that I found crazy was we were catching them by hanging the bait off the side of the boat. We could have been fishing with cane poles. Sounds absurd, doesn’t it? I have never had Redfish swarm the boat like that. It was so bizarre at times that there would be up to a dozen fish within 10 feet of the boat, in 3 feet of water waiting on chum. Before you call me crazy and/or liar, I have to tell you I got it all on video. Gotta love a smart phone! One of the guys I was with has promised to post the spots on YouTube. My technological training is not that advanced.

Other species that should be on the fishing menu are Trout and Spanish Mack-erel. The Mackerel bite may slow down as our water cools, but that should only make the Trout bite better. Another fish that should lend itself to the angler is the King Mackerel. They should be around in our area for another month or so, again, depending on how fast our waters cool off. Kingfish are a lot of fun to catch, but you better have tackle with a good drag system and plenty of line.

The FWC is supposed to make a ruling on the new Trout regulations on No-vember 16th. There is a possibility that we will have no closed season on our Trout fishery. If you are not familiar with the Trout regulations, you should know that November and December are usually the months that it is illegal to keep Trout.

If you are a bottom fisherman and Grouper digging is your thing, you still have some time to go get that trophy gag. The Grouper season closes the 16th of Novem-ber. Hopefully, you will have a great fall season of fishing. Until next time, good luck and be safe on the water. Remember: don’t let your kid be the one that got away, take them fishing. For charter information, you can call (813) 601-2900 or email [email protected] or you can visit www.ReelSimpleFishing.com.

Fishing in the Tampa Bay area has continued to be good and occasionally great as long as our weather has coop-erated. This is the most comfortable time of year to fish, but we still get in-clement weather from time to time that can be disruptive. Redfish have been the main focus over the past few weeks and should stay fairly steady with nice schools of reds eating in all areas of the bay and surrounding waters.

I had a trip the other day that was a fun trip with two of my peers and had a Redfish bite like I have never had. We

NORTH RIVER CHURCH OF CHRISTWE CARE ABOUT YOUR PROBLEMS

Everybody has problems some big, some little, but all very real. Some-times they overwhelm us and we can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. When they do, we need others to help us cope with them. We believe the church is a family, and as in the human family, we ought to help one another. The Bible teaches us, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2). No, we can’t solve all of your problems, but we can help you find your answers in Christ. We care enough to try.

If you are trying to find some answers and are looking for people who care, we hope you will visit our services and consider our plea to be just Christians. Search with us for answers in the written word of God. We believe you will find what you are looking for.

Join us for Worship this Sunday at 11 am. We are on US 301 North, 2.5 miles North of Parrish Center. Our office is open Tuesday - Friday 9 am to 1 pm. Stop by for a visit. We are on the NET at www.NorthRiv-erChurchofChrist.org. We can be reached at 941-776-1134.

located in Ellenton Commons and wondered what it is? I’ll bet that many Parrish (and Ellenton) residents have seen it and wondered about it.

Well, it’s a private club - but it is free to join. When you join, you get a membership card and your own ac-count. You have the opportunity to play 66 playing machines and attempt to win a Visa prize card in de-nominations of $25 up.

The owner of this location and also one in Sarasota on Lockwood Ridge Road says he has been in the in-dustry all his life. He measures his success not by dollars and cents but rather by running a clean, legiti-mate establishment that is fun and entertaining for his members.

The members who go there enjoy other amenities besides the playing machines. There are daily specials, pizza parties, dinner one night a week and complimen-tary coffee and sodas.

You can also play redemption games on the Inter-net where your winnings are played in cash.

Williams has an active October filled with projects and eventsAnna Maria Oyster Bar holds

Williams Family Night

Jon Tipton from the Anna Maria Oyster Bar and Ms. Campbell and Mr. Hockenbury from Williams Elementary show off the check received from Family Night.

Williams Elementary and the Anna Maria Oyster Bar held a Family Night at the Ellenton restaurant for all Williams families. The Oyster Bar donated a percentage of the sales from Family Night back to the school. The Oyster Bar also threw a Pizza Party for Mrs. Council’s fifth grade class for having the most students in attendance at Family Night.

In these times of budget reductions and schools searching for ways to support programs, the partnerships with businesses such as the Oyster Bar have become vital. Williams Elementary will use the funds from the event to support the school’s Posi-tive Behavior Program (PBS).

Mrs. Council and her 5th grade students with Mr. Tipton and Ms. Campbell.Mrs. Council’s class has the most students in attendance at Family Night.

Mrs. Sue Johnson’s first grade class was awarded cake pops from the PTO for collecting the most box tops during the first month of school. What a hit! The chil-dren loved them.

Green Team works on recycling project

Green Team Members: Front: Bryan, Bryce, Rhett, Megan; Back: Mr. Hockenbury,Matthew, Tyler, Morgan, Jasmine, Gracie, Haylie

The Green Team is working hard to reduce materials that go to the landfill by recycling paper, cardboard, aluminum cans and plastic bottles. Once again the paper that is collected is sent to a paper mill in Georgia where it is broken down to pulp and reused to make new paper products. The school in return gets compensated based on the quality of paper recycled and the weight. To date the Green Team has just over $600.00!

New this year, the Green Team will start accepting paper and plastic bottles from parents on Thursday mornings in front of the school. Just pull up and the Green Team will unload your recyclables. Parents may contact Mr. Hockenbury with any questions.

Cancerawareness

Williams Elementary’s Clinic supported October Breast Cancer Awareness Month by affirming the importance of self examination. The goal was to educate staff on the importance of monthly exams, mammograms and annual exams.. Manatee Diagnostics donated a goody basket including a gift cer-tificate for a free mammogram for a drawing for all who participated.

School Nurse, Donna Pasko, RN, is shown with the raffle basket.

News from Brown’s GroveTim and Hiedi Brown

thank you to all the vendors who helped make the festival a huge success. If you haven’t stopped by the Parrish Farm Market on US Highway 301 lately

you, need to get by and check out Tim’s beautiful field of heirloom tomatoes and squash. We should start picking some of the smaller varieties of heirlooms in a few weeks. The yellow squash at all the markets are from the Brown’s garden and are on special for 99 cents a pound the first week in November. We are also picking zuc-chini squash from our own garden.

Florida vegetables and citrus are just starting to come into season. We are now picking Ambersweet Oranges, Falglo Tangerines and Flame Red grapefruit that are available at all the markets. This week we also have plum and grape tomatoes, col-lard, turnip and mustard greens, avocados, pickling cukes, peppers, squash, Athena Cantaloupes, watermelons and radishes all from Florida!

Beiler’s Pretzels will be at Parrish Farm Market on Fridays and Saturdays. Mike makes hand made fresh soft pretzels that are available plain, salted or cinnamon/sug-ar as well as a pretzel dog that is very tasty and the best homemade lemonade slushy.

Many of you were able to meet our daughter, Tressie this weekend. It was won-derful having her home for a short visit! This past weekend we were able to make our Parrish Farm Market available for a special Fall Festival for families with children with Autism. They really enjoyed their time at the farm and thank you to our daugh-ter, Tressie, niece Tabby, Hiedi’s Mom and Dad and Sarah for helping these special children have a great day!

Tim and Trevor are having a short break before the start of citrus season by going hunting up in Georgia for the past week. So in the next article when Tim is back, we will have an update on a few more varieties of heirloom tomatoes.

Look forward to seeing you soon at the market!

What a great time we had at the Brown’s Grove Fall Festival! Beautiful weather, fun games, lots of sweet little children picking out the perfect pump-kin, family and friends enjoying the weekend! A big THANK YOU to Parrish Patriot 4-H Club for volunteering to run the children games; they did a fabulous job! Thank you!!! Also

Memories CONTINUED FROM PAGE 20side and scoops out all the yucky stuff - including the seeds of doubt, hate, ggreed, etc. Then He carves you a new smiling face and puts His light inside you to shine for the entire world to see.

I was always honored to sit at the table with all of my family and would always thank God for them. Our family was one that laughed and had fun. I think one of the things that made life fun was our ability to laugh at ourselves.

We should always be honored to be with our family. It doesn’t matter what they’ve done, what their circumstances are or what their abilities are. And then, families should pray together. We’ve all probably seen the signs that say “Families that pray together stay together.” That is a true statement.

Recently someone sent us an email with a prayer request. It went like this: I have a special prayer request to pass along. There’s a lady I’ve known forever. She’s very sick. On top of that, she’s being abused by those to whom she has given everything. Lies about her abound, and seem to come from all sides. It just breaks my heart. It seems there’s nothing I can do alone, but maybe, if we join together in prayer and lift her up, she will get better and survive. She’s well over 200 years old, but way too young to die. Her name is America….and I love her. What a prayer request! If you notice, I usually put II Chronicles 7:14 at the bot-tom of my stories. The scripture reads like this: “If my people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” What could be simpler than that? The Bible tells us not to steal, so we obey and don’t steal. It also tells us to love people, so we love people. Then, it tells us in II Chronicles 7:14 to pray and ask God to heal our land and He will do it. It’s very clear, but we don’t do it. Instead of complaining about government, situations, markets, etc., we should be praying. Please pray for our nation.

I pray that all of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving.Your comments about any of my stories are welcome at [email protected].

God bless America! II Chronicles 7:14

You can email Pastor Billat [email protected]

What can happen if disability Strikes?Today, income covers expenses, but . . . disability means lower income, higher

expenses. Did you know? According to a Harvard Law/Medical School study, medi-cal expenses associated with an illness or accident caused nearly 50% of the bank-ruptcies in 2001 (Health Affairs, February 2005). “Unless you’re Bill Gates, you’re just one serious illness away from bankruptcy,” said Dr. David Himmelstein, the study’s lead author and an associate professor of medicine. “Most of the medically bankrupt were average Americans who happened to get sick.”

How will you meet the expenses of a disability, just at the time your income ceases? The information, general principles and conclusions presented in this will help you make some valuable decisions.

What Social Security benefits are available in the event of a disability?Almost everyone in the United States who is employed or self-employed is cov-

ered by Social Security, which pays benefits to or on behalf of covered workers who retire, become disabled or die, assuming that eligibility requirements are met.

Disability benefitsEligibility: To qualify for monthly Social Security disability benefits, you must

be under age 65 and so severely disabled that you cannot perform any meaningful work. You must also have a minimum number of quarters of Social Security cover-age, based on your year of birth. Ordinarily, benefits do not begin until the sixth full month of disability. It can be difficult to qualify for Social Security disability benefits. In fact, from 1996 through 2006, an average of only about 48% of Social Security disability claims was eventually approved. (Source: Annual Statistical Re-port on the Social Security Disability Program, 2007; released September 2008).

Benefits: Your Social Security disability benefit equals your Primary InsuranceAmount (PIA) at the time you are disabled. Your spouse and eligible children can also receive disability benefits, determined in the same way as if you had retired. The Maximum Family Benefit, however, is lower than for retirement or survivor benefits. The average monthly Social Security disability benefit received in 2007 was $1,004.(Source: Annual Statistical Report on the Social Security Disability Program, 2007; released September 2008). You can request an Earnings and Benefit Estimate State-ment by submitting Form SSA-7004 to the Social Security Administration.

What does Social Security mean by disability? From the Social Security Administration: “The definition of disability under

Social Security is different than other programs. Social Security pays only for total disability. No benefits are payable for partial disability or for short-term disability. “Disability under Social Security is based on your inability to work. We consider you disabled under Social Security rules if you cannot do work that you did before and we decide that you cannot adjust to other work because of your medical condition(s). Your disability must also last or be expected to last for at least one year or to result in death. “This is a strict definition of disability. Social Security program rules assume that working families have access to other resources to provide support during peri-ods of short-term disabilities, including workers’ compensation, insurance, savings and investments.” Source: Social Security Online (http://www.ssa.gov).

What does this mean for you?According to the 2007 Annual Statistical Report on the Social Security Disability

Insurance Program for the period from 1996 through 2006:An average of about 48% of disabled-worker applicants were ultimately granted

disability benefits. The percentage of applicants awarded benefits at the initial claims level averaged 31%. An additional 17% of applicants were later awarded benefits as a result of appeals and hearings. Denied disability claims ultimately averaged about 49%. The average monthly benefit paid in 2007 was $1,004. Parrish Civic Association Corner

October 2011Dear Friends:

T-ShirtsThe pre-order for T-shirts has been placed. They will be delivered in time for the November 17th general membership meeting and will be available for pick up that night at the Y. Price will be $12.00. All sizes are available.

General Meeting/Birthday PartyThe Parrish Civic Association has represented the citizens of the Vil-lage of Parrish for 30 years as of November 16th. Therefore, at our first general membership meeting of the season on November 17th, we will be displaying memorabilia from previous years showing some of the great things the Civic Association has accomplished. Our featured speaker will be Joe McClash, our Commissioner-at- Large who will be speaking about what we can expect in the future.

Heritage DayThe third annual Heritage Day Festival and Parrish Chili Cook Off is off and running. We are receiving tremendous response to our requests and the committee is very excited about how the day is shap-ing up. Keep your eye out for more information in this paper and subsequent issues.

Post Office TreesWe were so proud of the trees that were planted around the Parrish post office by the Pack 41 Webelos. Unfortunately, the freezes and drought wreaked havoc on our trees and we lost several of them. The good news is that Mike Armstrong Landscaping agreed to supply us with some more trees so the Troop 41 Boy Scouts dug up the dead ones and replanted. We will be extra diligent next spring ensuring that the trees are continually watered. Now, that the new ones are planted, if you happen by the post office and notice some wilting, please let me know!

Parrish PrideWe are still working on our Parrish Pride Project and would like to encourage our businesses to meet with our committee and give us suggestions on what we can do to help spruce up our wonderful vil-lage. Whitney Watson’s youth volunteers have met and are having a yard sale on November 13th to benefit Reba’s House Assisted Living Facility. It will be from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at North River Hair and Nails on the corner of 73rd Street and US301, just north of the Y.

Please feel free to contact me with any other ideas or concerns about Parrish.
