Spotlight a Park: Prairie Farm Preserve and Bruentrup Heritage FarmPrairie Farm Neighborhood Preserve is a 22-acre natural area located on County Road D between White Bear Avenue and McKnight Road. The Bruntrup Heritage Farm’s two-acre farmstead is adjacent to the preserve. With a little imagina-tion, at Maplewood’s Prairie Farm Preserve you can travel back in time to the early 1900s and beyond. The open pasture at the preserve was seeded with native prairie grasses and flowers and offers a chance to wade through that sea of grass the early settlers described. A wetland created at the preserve attracts birds and wildlife. As you’re hiking the preserve, you’ll never be far from a glimpse of the old red barn of the Bruentrup Heritage Farm. The farm buildings were relocated to the preserve in 1999 and are maintained by the Maplewood Historical Society.

YMCA Swim Academy Coming to the Maplewood Community CenterThe City of Maplewood and the YMCA, a leading nonprofit dedicated to strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, have entered into a new operational partnership with the Maplewood Community Center (MCC).

Beginning in June, the YMCA will offer the YMCA Swim Academy at the MCC. With over 100 years of swim lesson experience, the YMCA will provide a safe environment for swimmers of all ages to develop water safety skills, build confidence and discover the health benefits of swimming. The YMCA, with support from the Hawkins Foundation and Abbey’s Hope Foundation, will also offer free water safety classes to 250 local youth.

The City of Maplewood is very excited about this partnership and what it will mean for the children and families we serve. We see this as the beginning of a strategic vision to further enhance and improve the Maplewood Community Center to ensure its long-term viability and serve the community. We believe that together, we can do more. The framework of the partnership agreement:• YMCA will manage the MCC Aquatic Center and directly supervise all aquatic staff• YMCA will manage the two City Beach contracts• YMCA will conduct swimming lessons • YMCA will hire a program executive to support staff with the overall management of the MCC• YMCA will support staff with development of marketing strategies for the MCC

NURTURING SKILLS AND BUILDING CONFIDENCE IN THE WATERFor more than 150 years, the Y’s goal has been to strengthen the whole person – spirit, mind and body. One of the most effective ways to accomplish this is to teach youth, teens and adults to swim. And, in the land of 10,000 lakes, it’s one of the most important offerings on the list. Swim lessons provide you and your child with new-found confi-dence. They learn skills which could save a life, and will last for lifetime. We’re committed to keeping class sizes small so swimmers get the expert, personal attention they need to succeed. Y instructors have a minimum of 40 hours of training including CPR, AED, First Aid and Oxygen Administration and are nationally certified to build your child’s swim skills and comfort level in the water. Every 7 weeks over 5000 youth, teens and adults choose the YMCA of the Greater Twin Cities to learn this lifelong skill. And now you can count on Y expertise for a high-quality learning experience through The YMCA Swim Academy at Maplewood Community Center.

WE’RE HERE FOR EVERYONEAll ages – from infants to seniors – can be a part of Y Swim Academy. We offer expansive day, evening and weekend class schedules offered 7 days a week to fit your family’s busy life.

She believes in the power of Pilates to nourish the mind, body and spirit and believes everyone can benefit from a Pilates practice; in addition, she hopes to teach Pilates to people who have suffered traumatic injuries and can empathize due to a hand injury sustained when she was 10.
