Music in Entiat: Both Band and Choir were busy with North Central Washington Music Education Association (NCWMEA) festivals in March!

The MS/HS Band performed on March 21, receiving a banner for Excellent performance, adjudicated at the High School level. The Band performed “Cyclone,” and a beautiful Native American piece, entitled, “Mazama.”

The Entiat MS/HS Choir performed at festival on March 28. The students performed, “Hey Ho, Nobody Home” an English Folk Song, “Petite Enfant,” a French Folk Song, and “Gloria Deo,” a song performed in Latin. The choir received an Excellent-Plus, (1 point away from Superior), again adjudicated at the High School level. This is pretty amazing since the choir only meets 3 mornings a week for a half hour.

The Entiat spring concert was held on March 28, for grades 3-12. The third grade students did an incredible job reading their music and performing “Rainy Day Blues,” and “D-Vision.” Following the 3

rd grade was the 4

th and 5

th Grade combined Beginning

Band. Students performed: “Midnight Mission,” “Brontosaurus,” and “Nature’s Fury.” 5th Grade students who performed at the NCWMEA Solo and Ensemble Contest performed their musical selections for the evening concert. This included: Aurora Berg, Haley Chisam, Bailey Ward, Ithzel Avelar-Olmos, Araya Clark, Necia Sax, Isaac Torres, Monico Valdez Robinson and Camilo Barragan. The MS/HS Choir and Band performed their festival pieces. Kaleigh Michael, a senior, also performed her Solo and Ensemble piece entitled: “Trumpet Concerto in E Flat, Allegro,” composed by J. B. G. Neruda. Kaleigh was accompanied by Entiat’s amazing piano accompanist, Yuka Sanford. Yuka also accompanied the choir for festival and the spring concert.

On May 5, the Entiat Tiger Band and Flag Color Guard marched in the annual Wenatchee Apple Blossom Parade. Entiat scored first place in Band Performance and Drill Performance for the B-Division Schools. Entiat also placed 9

th place overall among all the bands

performing in Apple Blossom. Entiat tied with Kennedy High School (Seattle) in receiving the highest score in “Visual Ensemble Performance.” Way to go TIGER BAND! A huge THANK YOU to Stacy Mitchell and her work with the Flag Auxiliary.

On May 8, the 4th and 5

th grades participated with 5 other schools in the Beginning Band Festival, held at the Chelan

Community Gym. Annie Chalmers, the Director with the Icicle Creek Center for the Arts, was the guest conductor. The students practiced together for 3 hours and then all performed six songs together in a 20 minute concert. Entiat shined as they performed with Chelan, Brewster, Bridgeport, Manson and Pateros students.

We have a few remaining performances left before summer starts. The MS/HS Choir will have a last performance singing the National Anthem at the Wenatchee Apple Sox game on June 6, for the 7:00pm game. The MS/HS Band and Choir will be performing at Silverwood Theme park on June 9, at 12:00 noon. That following Tuesday, June 12-14, Entiat Band students will fly to Anaheim, California, to take part in a performance workshop in Disneyland. The band students worked the past two years to earn money for the trip, through selling Entiat Tiger Shirts, Valentine’s cookies and flowers and working the concessions at basketball games. A big “thank you”

goes to the community for helping the band to achieve their goal.

PICK YOUR PRIORITIES IN PUBLIC K-12 EDUCATION!

Chris Reykdal, the Superintendent of Public Instruction has released a survey that asks the public to help develop the future K-12 education budget.

The survey asks participants to decide how important they find things like student support services such as counseling and mental health, family engagement and outreach, school safety enhancements, programs that specifically address racial disparities in learning and discipline, and more.

The survey will remain open until Friday, June 8, and is available in 10 languages. Reykdal plans to release a second survey in mid-summer that will provide Washingtonians an opportunity to prioritize budget request items that emerge from this first survey.

For more information and to take the survey, go to: www.k12.wa.us/Communications/BudgetSurvey.aspx

Principal’s Message Dear Entiat Families and Community:

As we close out our school year, I would like to extend a huge thank you for the great support you have given to our schools, staff, and your students. We are so proud of our graduating seniors! We wish them well on their future endeavors. We credit their families for helping them to reach this special day.

I would like to also welcome three new teachers who will be joining our Entiat staff. Kellen Drake has a strong background, multiple subject endorsements, and a great mindset towards students and teaching. Kellen will teach 6-12 P.E. and Health along with being our new boy’s head basketball coach. He was a college athlete and has been employed as a firefighter for the U.S. Forest Service during the summers. Jennifer DeLay is an experienced teacher moving to the Wenatchee valley from Puyallup. Jennifer has a Master’s in Teaching, with several years of experience at the elementary level. An interesting fact about Jennifer; teaching is her second career. She got her start in finance. She is excited to work for a small school in our close-knit community. She brings with her a husband and two children. Jennifer will teach 3

rd grade.

Our third new teacher is Vicki Edwards. Vicki has been the Enrichment STEM and Highly Capable teacher for elementary students in Quincy for 6 years. Teaching since 1992, she has taught as an upper elementary classroom teacher in Quincy and the Tri-Cities. Vicki is a National Board Certified Teacher. Vicki has three grown children and a husband who also teaches in the valley. Vicki will teach a 3

rd/4

th split classroom. One of my favorite principles is “hire the heart, train the

brain.” Our new teachers have an abundance of both qualities.

It is with sadness we say goodbye to John Draper, Lori Anderson and Dana Cada. John Draper is retiring after 34 years of total teaching with 24 of those years with Entiat School District. John plans to spend more time fishing and hunting with his spare time. Lori and her family are moving to Tucson, Arizona for her husband’s employment. Dana has accepted a position in Quileute School District. This move fits Dana’s plan to retire on the Washington Coast with her family. These staff members are dear to our hearts, our district and the community. We send love and positive wishes with them as they embark on new adventures.

It has been a pleasure serving as your principal this year. In my 23 years of education, this year has been the most rewarding. I love the Entiat way! I will be in the school office through June and back in August. My door is always open. Feel free to stop by and say hello!

I wish you a relaxing summer filled with sunshine and time with family.

Sincerely, Robin Kirkpatrick

The Entiat Cemetery hosted the annual Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 28, 2018. The local Boy Scouts of Entiat participated by carrying flags from all branches of the military including the POW and MIA flags. Cathy Montgomery organized the event and Jimmy Mitchell, a local Entiat Boy Scout, was the master of ceremonies. The United States Flag, which has flown for years in the cemetery, had become tattered and was taken down. There will be a retiring flag ceremony in the near future. Linda and Don Olin donated a flag in honor of their son, Michael Olin, who served in the United States Navy for 20 years. He was a graduate of Entiat High School and died in 2009 of cancer. The beautiful ceremony ended with the scouts retrieving the colors.

The Entiat High School Career Exploration class had a great experience exploring different programs offered by Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake earlier this month. The tour on campus was informative and interesting to all of the students and chaperones. With limited time, we were able to visit the Criminal Justice Program, Aviation Maintenance Technology, Automotive Technology and Commercial Pilot Training.
