PARK SCHOOL FOR GIRLS AUTUMN 2017 NEWSLETTER U11 Netball – Chigwell School Netball Festival Early morning on Saturday 16 th September, the u.11 netball girls arrived to play in the annual Chigwell school netball festival. This is a great introduction for new players to learn and have fun in a competitive yet informal environment. Our team was a mixture of girls from year four to year six and all should be commended for such great attitude and determination in their first tournament. The girls were a credit to the school, listening well and doing their very best. I must say a huge thank you to the band of parents who stayed to cheer them on throughout the morning and to Khadija in year ten who umpired to such a high standard. The team was: Year Six - Aisha (captain), Makaila, Tia, year five - Safah, Mariam, Kanika, Tvisha, Zaynah and year four- Zainah. Mrs L Wright (Head of PE)

Forest Netball Tournament

The Prep Netball team entered the Forest Netball Tournament on Friday 13th October. They started slowly but ended up being the winners of their group. We are delighted with how well they did, considering some of the girls have not played much netball. Every week they are improving. Keep up the good work Ladies!

Prize-giving dance

I would like to mention a special well done to all the dancers at prize giving. Girls from year ten and eleven worked so hard in their preparations culminating in wonderful performances at the town hall. I was delighted and proud to see such an array of talent and hope that the younger girls were inspired and can strivetowards such excellence in future years..

House Dance The house captains and girls have been working hard all term on perfecting their performances. Girls are encouraged through house meetings to choose a theme and all girls from year three – to nine perform in the final at the beginning of December. It is lovely to see girls of all ages coming together in the spirt of their house. This year the winning house was Cranbrook, with Wanstead in 2nd place and Valentines in 3rd.

Well done to all those who took part.

YEAR 11 CHARITY COMMITTEEEach year students from Year 11 form a Charity Committee and then choose a charity to

support. Throughout the year, the Committee organize fund raising events for their chosen charity. The Committee wrote the following piece to explain what their chosen charity does

and why they chose Girls Not Brides. We chose Girls Not Brides, as we are a community of young girls who have promising futures. However, some girls in developing countries do not have the same opportunities as us so the year 11 Charity Committee decided this would be a good charity to support other young women.

Girls Not Brides is a global partnership of more than 800 civil society organisations from over 95 countries committed to ending child marriage and enabling girls to fulfill their potential.Members are based throughout Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas. We share the conviction that every girl has the right to lead the life that she chooses and that, by ending child marriage, we can achieve a safer, healthier and more prosperous future for all.Stronger together, Girls Not Brides members bring child marriage to global attention, build an understanding of what it will take to end child marriage and call for the laws, policies and programs that will make a difference in the lives of millions of girlsThe Elders, a group of independent global leaders working together for peace and human rights, as part of their efforts to more attention to the harmful practices that hold girls and women back, and to encourage and empower others to work to create a world without child marriage initiated girls Not Brides in September 2011. https://www.girlsnotbrides.org/

YYEAR 7 – STUBBERS ADVENTURE

The focus of the Y7 trip to Stubbers was to bond with one another and to provide an opportunity for the new intake to get to know all of the girls in their year. Girls slept the two nights in dormitories with their close friends but spent the days in random groups of eight that changed round on the second day. We travelled with our Head and Deputy Head girls so that the younger children could benefit from their care and see their role models at first hand. Both days were filled with exciting outward-bound activities, the first day included water activities and the girls learnt to drive jet skis and paddle canoes as well as drenching themselves from head to foot playing in the shallows on the ‘beach’. They also tried their hand at off-road 4x4 driving and I note some Grand Prix stars in the making. On the second day we were introduced to the high ropes and many of the girls showed extreme bravery and agility as they faced this exciting course. A bush craft activity saw all the girls learn to start a fire without matches. A final team challenge activity reinforced the bonding and teamwork aspect of the trip. Mrs Nicholas, Mrs Harker and Mrs Jarada thank the girls for their excellent behaviour and attitude throughout; it was a great pleasure to spend time with them and to have the privilege of getting to know them and their talents further. (A.H.) Comments made by Year 7 about the Stubbers trip: ‘Lots of fun and incredibly fantastic activities. We got to know each other more and it is a good way to learn to cooperate at the start of Year 7.’ ‘My favourite thing about Stubbers is that we really bonded and I faced my fears. The instructors were very enthusiastic and I learned from many fun activities. I loved Stubbers.’

‘ I think Stubbers was a fantastic trip and I really enjoyed it because I have always been scared of water and when we did canoeing and jet skiing it was absolutely amazing.’

RRED NOSE DAY

Park School for Girls has taken part in designing an iconic nose for the Red Nose Day collection. The winning pupil will get the chance to see their winning idea brought to life by designers, and be presented with their Nose before it hits shelves in Sainsbury’s and Oxfam stores across the country in 2019. Five runners-up will also have their Noses exclusively designed and 3D printed. Our pupils worked hard and submitted excellent, creative entries on a magical theme. I have chosen the maximum amount of seven entries for the competition. Those girls whose designs have been submitted by me are: Zarah Alam, Zayba Umer, Iman Ali and Tisha Chowdhury in Year 7 and Areeb Khan, Amelia Bhattacharya, Hannah Hajwane and Thairah Salawu in Year 8. Good luck girls! Well done to everybody that entered – it was very difficult to pick just seven. Mrs Bellew

Shoes should be shoes, not boots, and they should be brown. Slip on shoes are not appropriate for children below Year 7.

HOUSEKEEPING

Please remember to update the school with any changes to your contact details, it is essential that we are able to contact you in the case of an emergency. If your daughter is going on a school trip or visit it is also necessary that you complete all sections of the consent form that is sent home, even if you have already provided the information. The person leading the trip/visit may not be your daughter’s form teacher and they need to refer to the information provided to ensure your daughter’s wellbeing at all times.

Please also remember that Park School is a nut free school, the following extract is from Kids Health Organisation:

‘If it is not treated quickly, anaphylaxis can be life threatening. Although a small amount of peanut protein can set off a severe reaction, it is rare, but not unknown, that people get an allergic reaction just from breathing in small particles of nuts or peanuts, normally the protein has to be ingested (swallowed) to cause a reaction.’

As from 3rd January if you’re sending Medicines into school, Mrs Williams and Mrs Powley will not administer this without a completed request to administer Medication form. This form will be available to download from our website

Parking Please can we ask parents not to park on the front of the school to drop off or pick up their children, we have a no parking policy between 8.20 and 9.00 and 3.20 and 3.40 as this is against safeguarding. Thankyou Mrs Nicholas

This Is Rattle

Take the time to imagine yourself being a teenager, going to your post box to find a letter with

your name on the front of it sent by the London Symphony Orchestra, which invites to play at the

Barbican centre with Sir Simon Rattle as your conductor. I think we can all agree on this being

quite bizarre and astonishing, but this is what happened to me during the summer of ’17.

Before coming to London, Simon Rattle previously directed the Berlin Philharmonic orchestra,

and so a 10-day festival named ‘This Is Rattle’ welcomed the conductor to his new concert hall

and orchestra. The festival included

galleries, specifically designed artworks

and exhibitions dedicated to the conductor,

along with daily concerts performed by full

orchestras, playing some of the most

exhilarating and renowned pieces of music

ever written.

I was asked by the LSO to join them for a

concert as part of the ‘This Is Rattle’

festival on Sunday 24th September. This

was a result of many rehearsals held at

either LSO St Luke’s or Guildhall school. I

was required to attend practices with other

students from across London along with

LSO members and Guildhall graduates,

some being directly after and some during

the weekend, and all being around 2hrs

30mins long, with only short, 10 minute breaks. It was definitely a challenge to complete, but all

the hard work put in was certainly worthwhile.

One of the pieces we played was ‘The Rite Of Spring’ by Stravinsky, and as a 1st Violinist I

definitely found it to be strenuous and demanding, but to hear the final result with the full

orchestra felt immensely rewarding, and I don’t think I’ve ever encountered a more electrifying

piece during the 7 years I have been part of an orchestra. It was so loud that all instrumentalists

were given ear plugs at the beginning of rehearsals!

The entire experience was priceless and I shared many hilarious, memorable moments with friends

I met during the rehearsals and performances, and I feel extremely grateful to have been involved

in such a monumental event!
