I hope everyone had a great and safe Halloween (or, depending on when this newsletter gets delivered….is gearing up to have a great and safe Halloween)! It’s one of my families’ favorite times of the year. You know, I believe recognition is important and I haven’t used my column

to do that yet. So, I want to take this month to say thank you to some folks, our homeowners, our volunteers and our board. All of you make Park Glen a great place to live! Being part of a large Community like Park Glen isn’t easy sometimes. All of our families have different tastes, different styles and different outlooks on things. The cultural diversity here is really amazing to me but regardless of those differences, I think we are all somewhat common on the inside. We want to live in an area that’s filled with good people, one that feels safe when we go outside and one that feels like home when we’re inside. Maybe I am biased, but I think Park Glen fits that

description. The families that live here make it that way. Thanks so much for being great neighbors!

Speaking of family, you are probably aware of the many family events that are planned for our community…start with the staples, Holiday in the Park, the annual Turkey Trot, our Easter celebration the Eggstravaganza and last but not least, our Independence Day celebration in July.

This year we also added two Dive-in movie nights and a Polar Express night is planned as well. Soon we hope there can be more. But let me be clear, these things don’t happen by accident. They happen because we have great volunteers who are willing to spend hours of their own time selflessly serving this community.

In addition to the event volunteers, a big shout out to all of the committee volunteers as well. You play roles that many don’t know about but your importance to our community success is no less. To all of the volunteers who make Park Glen

as good as it can be I want to say thank you so much for what you do! It certainly does not go unnoticed. And to those who would like to help plan events or volunteer, I want to encourage you to get involved. There is so much to do. Just talk to a board member or email Dana Hammack at [email protected].

Now, to the Board of Directors. You are breaking new ground here in Park Glen and people are noticing. You are available and dedicated to listening to our community and trying to do what is right. You insist on accountability from yourselves and you are an example of servant leaders who take time away from your families to provide a voice for our community. To those who may see you in action, it’s not always pretty, it’s not always precise but it’s always consistent and purposeful. No reward, no extra paycheck, just service. I want to thank you for that. I am honored to work with you.

District 4 Rolling Town Hall:Thank you, Park Glen, Kyle Jensen, Randy Acosta, Mayor Price, Ft. Worth Police and neighbors of all ages, for joining us on our first Rolling Town Hall! We had a wonderful turn out of approximately 40-50 cyclists of all levels. What a success to have had great dialogue about our streets, community needs; especially in particular the parks and trail connectivity.

With the 30plus riders, we were able to make a remarkable impact on diverse conversations as well as a visual display to commuters and neighbors, whom often waved or sometimes joined in on the ride, that we are serious about seeing firsthand the important concerns and or ideas you have for your community. We want to continue to encourage dialogue as we see the potential of immeasurable results if we work

together and keep the lines of communication open.

Our final event of the summer was a big hit! There were around 60 adults and kids who came out to our Dive-In Movie night at the Longhorn Activity Center Pool in September. They enjoyed free hotdogs, chips and swimming. Then at sunset, Big Hero 6 was shown on the big screen. We would like to give a big shout out to Boy Scout Troop Leader Bob Kilburn who saved the day and thanks to 9Round Basswood for providing the water!! We will certainly be planning some more movie nights next summer!

Take mental safety precautions:Your sanity is as important as your family’s physical safety. Expect some amount of stress and plan ahead as much as possible to keep it to a minimum. Organize your shopping list and spread your shopping activities out over a few weeks. Have the holiday dinner at someone else’s house if having it at yours is too much stress.

Take physical safety precautions:Young children are at-risk of eating poisonous holiday plants (mistletoe, poinsettias, and holly berries). Keep your local poison center’s number near the phone. Small table decorations and ornaments can be harmful if swallowed. Try to keep small objects, including hard candies

and nuts, out of reach. If a child eats too much, read the medication label before treating upset stomachs. Fire-proof your home. Natural and artificial trees can catch fire and while roaring fireplaces may look festive they can be dangerous if proper safety measures are not in place.

Involve your children in the preparation of the festivities:Have your children help you with the all of the various aspect of preparing for the holidays. Brainstorm menu items from a stack of holiday recipes. Make holiday decorations together from ideas gathered in family magazines or special holiday craft books. Some craft ideas make excellent gift ideas. Start a holiday memory box. Save all of the notes and cards, bits of wrapping paper, special pictures, and other odd assortments to review later in the year. Get excited about looking in the mailbox for Christmas cards and let the children help decide the best location for them. Make up a list of people to send your holiday greeting. If you’re really ambitious make them up by hand.

Create special traditions and rituals:Traditions and rituals are patterns of behaviors that have symbolic or spiritual meaning. They build firm foundations and reduce children’s holiday hyperactivity by creating a sense of

family identity. Crafting, Dinner menus, religious observances, advent calendars, gift wrapping parties, ornament collecting, sing-a-longs, and special holiday stories are just a few ways that parents can develop more intimate relationships with their children.

Reduce your expectations:If you expect to have no problems, perfect children, or accident proof holidays you will be in for a major disappointment. Remember that children are often over-stimulated by the sights, sounds, and incredible number of television commercials about the holidays. Think positively, optimistically, and rationally.

Give yourself a gift:The greatest gift you can give yourself is the gift of taking care of yourself. You have to take care of yourself before you can start taking care of everyone else. Delegate some of the shopping and preparations to other family members and take frequent breaks to regain lost energy. Do something for someone else that doesn’t involve writing a check. It’s amazing how doing a selfless act can renew your inner strength. Call a few nonprofit organizations in the phone book to see how you can help. Valuing yourself and help others less fortunate is also a good model for your children of what the holidays are really about!

What a fun month for the Scouts in Park Glen. The Scouts are right in the middle of their “Popcorn Sales”. They have been selling popcorn at several retailers and door to door. Thanks for supporting Scouting. Popcorn sales supports local units provide quality programs for the boys.

The Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts both participated in the Trinity Trash Bash in Fort Worth. Our area was the Trinity River around the Coyote Drive in and Lag rave Field. The Scouts were busy as usual. They began with a Court of Honor, recognizing all their accomplishments for the last 3 months, they camped out at Worth Ranch Boy Scout Camp and participated in the Brazos River Canoe Race meanwhile back in Fort Worth some of the

Scouts went to the Alliance Air show, earned and received their Aviation Merit Badge and were invited on the tarmac to meet and greet the Blue Angels. I am sure you heard them flying over our neighborhood. They hosted an open house at the Longhorn Activity Center for Webelos (soon to be Boy Scouts), where they shared some scout skills and had some fun including, rock climbing, tug-war, Dutch oven cooking and lots of branding. They rounded out the month with some hiking in preparation for a trip to Philmont ( Scout Heaven) next summer.

The Cubs Scout had their first Pack Meeting of the year, where they all cleaned up on their awards over the summer break. They manned a float in the Central High School Homecoming Parade, led the Flag ceremony for the PTA

meeting @ Park Glen Elementary School, and welcomed all the new Cub Scouts to ROCKET INTO SCOUTING at a rocket launch for all new scouts provided by our local council. All the new Cub Scouts built and launched their rockets and had great fun doing archery and stomp rockets.

Please join us for the Red, White, and Blue Tribute to our Veteran’s on November 1st @ 4PM @ Alliance United Methodist Church where our entire community will gather to honor our Veteran’s in a community wide Flag retirement ceremony. Cranberry Bread Pudding Ingredients• 3 cups milk • 1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream • 3/4 cup white sugar • 5 eggs • 1 1/2 teaspoons lemon zest • 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 3/4 vanilla bean, split and seeds scraped away • 1 1/2 French baguettes, cut into 2-inch slices • 1/2 cup golden raisins • 1 cup cranberries • 2 teaspoons butter Directions1. Whisk milk, cream, sugar, eggs, lemon zest, salt, cinnamon, and vanilla bean together in a bowl; fold in baguette slices, raisins, and cranberries. Set aside to soak for 40 minutes.2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Butter a 12-inch deep-dish pie dish.

3. Transfer bread mixture to prepared pie dish; remove and discard vanilla bean. Cover dish with aluminum foil.4. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake until until pudding is set and lightly browned, about 15 more minutes.

Turkey Tetrazinni Ingredients• 2 (8 ounce) packages angel hair pasta • 1/4 cup butter • 2/3 cup sliced onion • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour • 2 cups milk • 1 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon ground white pepper • 1/2 teaspoon poultry seasoning • 1/4 teaspoon ground mustard • 1 cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese, divided • 2 tablespoons chopped pimento peppers • 1 (4.5 ounce) can sliced mushrooms • 1 pound cooked turkey, sliced

Directions1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook for 4 minutes, or until almost tender. Drain.2. Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion; cook and stir until tender. Stir in the flour until blended, then gradually stir in the milk so that no lumps form. Season with salt, pepper, poultry seasoning and mustard. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens. Remove from the heat and add 2/3 cup cheese and pimento, stirring until cheese melts. Add undrained mushrooms to cheese sauce.3. Place a layer of pasta in the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish. Cover with a layer of turkey, and then a layer of cheese sauce. Repeat the layers. Sprinkle remaining 1/3 cup cheese over top.4. Bake for about 25 minutes in the preheated oven, until sauce is bubbly and cheese on top is toasted.

If you did not receive a statement, you can log in to the Resident Portal at RealManage.com to correct your address, get your balance, and make a payment. Instructions for making a payment or contacting RealManage may be found on our website (www.parkglen.org).

Because the statements were late getting out, the payment due date has been extended to November 1, with a late fee and interest applied if payment is not received by Nov. 10. The address and available methods for payment are different from last year because of the change in the neighborhood's property manager, so please do not use prior addresses or methods to send payment. The statements from RealManage contain the new mailing address for payments, or you can make an electronic payment by logging in to the Resident Portal at RealManage.com. While you can make a payment by credit card, we strongly discourage this because of the $14.95 fee that would be charged to you by the credit card processing company. Payment by e-check (ACH bank transfer) is free.

You can find the Property Modification Approval Request Form and instructions on our website (www.parkglen.org). The Architectural Control Committee (ACC) is the group of volunteers that reviews and makes decisions on these requests. The ACC’s mission is to ensure that all changes to our properties will conform to the deed restrictions that we all agreed to abide by. A copy of your Deed Restrictions and the approved CCR Bulletins may be obtained from the Park Glen website.

The Board of Directors gets lots of questions about sidewalks and mailboxes. Questions like, how do I get on the list to get my sidewalk replaced or how do I get my mailbox repaired? Honestly, these are really good questions and of course, as homeowners, we want really good ones, right? The answers are in the Conditions, Covenants and Restrictions (CC&Rs). You can find the CC&Rs for your Village on ParkGlen.org. Below is an example from Phase VII.

“Section 1.13. Sidewalks. Any owner, when building houses on the Lots, shall build sidewalks along the fronts and sides of Lots abutting streets, which sidewalks shall conform to the City, FHA and VA specifications and regulations.” “Section 1.14. Mailboxes. Mailboxes shall be constructed of a material and design approved in writing by Declarant prior to their installation, and shall be in conformity with the requirements of the City of Fort Worth. Mailboxes may be built in enclosures containing multiple mail boxes, and in such event the Owners of the Lots with mailboxes in such enclosure shall be responsible, equally, for maintaining such enclosure in good condition and repair. If such Owners fail to do so, Declarant shall have the right, but not the obligation, to make any repairs, the cost, of which shall be reimbursed to Declarant by such Owners, equally, promptly upon receipt of an invoice therefor. The amount to be reimbursed, if not paid within 10 days after the date of such invoice, shall bear interest from the date of the invoice at the maximum legal rate of interest that can be contracted for under the laws of the State of Texas.”

The section and language isn’t the same for every Village but the intent is the same. Park Glen homeowners are responsible for the condition of their mailboxes and sidewalks.

FYI… Do you know the little newspaper that is delivered to most Park Glen homes once a week, that many residents didn’t ask for and don’t want? That’s the Keller Citizen, which sits in many driveways for weeks before being picked up and thrown away. Did you know that you can cancel that delivery? Just call 1-800-776-7827 between 7am and 3pm M-F and ask for “Customer Service Representative.” It’s pretty easy to cancel, then you’ll never have to deal with it again.

Park Glen Neighborhood AssociationCommittees & Volunteer Opportunities

We are always on the lookout for volunteers!! Here is a list of places where you can volunteer your time and serve your community.

Social Committee (Activities & Events) - This committee organizes, promotes and produces a few events throughout the year (Easter Eggstravaganza, July 4th Celebration/ Parade, Turkey Trot, and others).

Communications Committee - Gather information and/or write articles for the monthly newsletter as well as communicating through social media and the Park Glen website.

Hospitality Committee - Greet and welcome each new homeowner to our neighborhood, delivering a welcome gift.

Service Committee - The vision is to build a network of volunteer neighbors who will assist other neighbors as the need arises. For example, an elderly couple who is unable to get their yard cleaned up one week and need some help, we would like to be able to call some folks to help get that yard done for them.

Development Committee - This committee monitors plans and projects and works with local government to exert influence over improvements, infrastructure, and development of our area.

Code Blue: Citizens on Patrol - Volunteers act as additional sets of ears and eyes for the police. Requires brief training at the police academy.

Crime Watch Block Captains - Coordinate and mobilize your neighbors to look out for crime and keep watch for each other. Requires training from the Fort Worth Police.

Architectural Control Committee - This committee will meet biweekly to review requests from homeowners for home improvements in accordance with the requirements of the deed restrictions. This group helps protect our investments in our property.

Village Advisors - These are folks who are willing to be a point of contact for homeowners in their particular neighborhood to help solve any issues or concerns that may come up. Park Glen has 13 different villages and our goal is to get a Village Advisor for each village. There are lots of opportunities for you to be active in Park Glen, and we could sure use your help! If you are interested in being involved in the neighborhood please come to the next Board meeting or contact us at [email protected].

Girl Scout Juniors and Cadettes learned that Flying IS for Girls during a workshop sponsored Offered by the Dallas Chapter of the Ninety-Nines, an International Or-ganization for Women Pilots. Girl Scouts discovered how airplanes fly, assembling model planes, and learned how to Map out a route of flight and identify key features to look for and look out for during flight. This was a very exciting STEM event led by women pilots.

Girls were completely engaged in discussion on mental health and men-tal illness as we earned the Girl Scout Mental Health Awareness Patch and talked with coordinators from JPS Health and MHC of Tarrant County. Juniors and Cadettes were given the

opportunity to discuss steps to boost our mood, how to handle change, and signs of mental health distress. These things along with a few point-ers on positive reinforcement are just some of tools we can use to create our sense of happiness and maybe offer support to our friends.

The Cowgirl Museum presented Camp Wildfire where the girls took part in activities that centered on the stewardship of the land and protec-tion of the wild horse. Lead. The 99’s presented the Girls Can Fly workshop at the Frontiers of Flight Museum in Dallas. Juniors and Ca-dettes met professional pilots of high wing, low wing, and commercial air-planes. They learned the science be-hind flight: thrust, lift, drag, aviation alphabet, and flight planning. It was Amazing!
