ST LUKE’S CHURCHLast time I said that September was looking busy – I was not wrong, and October is continuing the busyness!

High on the agenda, of course, is the annual celebration of Harvest which, this year, will take place in St Luke’s Church on Sunday 22 October at 11.15am. Stickney Primary School will be celebrating in Church on Monday 16 October. All the tinned items donated will go to Centrepoint in Boston, where they help support the homeless. If you would like to support this worthy cause, but cannot make the service, just pop your goods into the Church during the week and add it to the display.

Our Harvest celebrations continue with the Harvest Supper in the village hall on Monday 23 October. Good food and enjoyable company await all who come with their own plate and cutlery (Adults: £7.50, Children under 11: £3.00). Please let us know you are coming – it helps us get the catering right! Bev Gosling (480641) Sandra Boone (480802) or Doreen Cooley (480397) would love to hear from you.

We want to record our thanks to all who supported the August Bingo which raised £414.35 and Sandra & Dave’s Open Garden which raised £241.00. Thanks go also to Sarah Gosling who used her holiday from studying to paint the St Luke Owl on our servery. Call in and admire her handiwork. The faculty to permit the repairs to the window and the permission to remove some diseased trees in the Churchyard should arrive on my desk any day now and the work will commence.

Services during October:(in St Luke’s Church unless otherwise indicated):01 October 11.15am Holy Communion

08 October 9.30am Morning Worship

15 October 11.15am Family Worship

22 October 11.15am Harvest Festival

Gardening Tips for OctoberOutdoor temperatures fall quickly this month and we may even experience the occasional frost, so be prepared to protect any plants still maturing and also those sown late for early spring harvesting. Even cloches which are covering dwarf French beans in order to prolong the picking season or summer salads will need to be protected at both ends if a frost is forecast. Oh dear, nothing makes the year speed by more quickly than writing gardening notes in one month to be read for the next!

Here then are a few jobs we could be getting on with as the days become increasingly shorter and the TV winter schedules begin:

1} A major task for this time of the year is the 'Autumn Tidy'. This could include useable produce or ripe seed heads to be gathered for drying. Exhausted stems of e.g. Runner beans or Sweet corn can also be cut down and can be added to the compost heap. Dead and yellow leaves should be cleared away especially around fruit trees and, of course, any weeds should be cleared. Autumn leaves should be put in plastic bags which are spiked and then watered. In a couple of years the contents of those bags will be a valuable source for the garden.

2} Sow seeds of 'early' varieties of broad beans. They should grow over-winter and give you a crop from around June next year.

3} October is the last chance for transplanting spring cabbages. Plant them in ground that has been well firmed down and cover with nets to protect them from the birds.

4} If you have a cold frame or greenhouse, try sowing a few seeds of early summer cauliflowers in pots or modules. Keep them under cover and plant them out in March.

5} If you did not plant out your over-wintering autumn onion sets earlier, it's not too late to do so in early October. This year I'm trying 'Radar' and 'Senshu Yellow'.

6} If you have grown pumpkins in readiness for Hallowe'en, they should be cut and left to dry in the sun. This 'curing' hardens the skins and they keep longer.

I leave you with this thought, which I saw at a Gardening Show recently: " Curious how gardening is cheaper than therapy, and you get tomatoes".

FOUND DOG ADVICE ALERTThis is a general advice alert to all members of the public who may come across a lost dog.Under current law the finder of a lost dog may provide accommodation for that dog for an initial period of seven days whilst the owner of the dog is sought. You MUST contact the dog warden for your area, Tel: 01507 601111, and register the dog as found or you could be charged with theft by finding. The dog warden may decide that you can board the dog for the seven days if you are a suitable person. The finder must take all reasonable steps to ensure the legal owner of the dog is found within that period of time:

Check if the dog is microchipped (now a legal requirement) Check DOGLOST website to see if the dog is registered as lost Ring local rehoming kennels to see if an owner has registered their details Check Lincs FM website to see if the dog has been registered as lost Put up local notices to say you have found a dog Add the dog to social media sites such as Facebook

After seven days, if an owner has not been found, the finder may decide to keep the dog or rehome it. To ensure your dog is found and reunited with you as soon as possible, ensure your dog tag is up to date and your chip details have the correct address on the database. Keep your chip details on your mobile phone so they can be updated on the data base if your dog is lost.

Special circumstances: If you find a sighthound, ie lurcher, saluki, or greyhound please take extra care when trying to trace the owner. Many dogs are abandoned during the hare coursing season, for various reasons, and care should be taken to trace the legal owner of these dogs. If the microchip gives a current owner, these details should be passed to the Dog Warden to enable them to make an informed decision as to whether the dog should be returned or not.

Barking DogsComplaints are often received regarding pet dogs barking in neighbouring gardens, for example when the owners are at work, or just out for a few hours. This can be very annoying and upsetting for neighbours. Please take care to ensure your dog is happy, and safe when being left outdoors for any length of time.

Stickney is classed as a large village in the plan, the Planning Inspector suggests that small and medium villages should have some development to allow for growth so they do not disappear. Lincolnshire Waste Partnership is now working better to deal with the disposal of household waste. A way of disposing of food separately is being looked into. The Louth Livestock Market consultation has ended and the results will be used for ELDC to make a decision on its future. The Councillors were asked if ELDC would be providing signs with the new law regarding dogs. This would mean that signs through the District were all the same with the ELDC logo on. This will be looked into by the Dist Councillors.

County Cllr Bowkett reported by email: £110,000.00 will be spent on Fodderdyke Bank in this financial year. £1.2m will be spent on Fodderdyke Bank in each of the next two years. A number of the vehicles were speeding and, with the accidents in this area, it now meets the criteria for the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership to use speed camera enforcement.
