1 PARISH WEEKLY NEWSLETTER 19 APRIL 2015 “Christ Appears to the Disciples at the Table after the Resurrection” A Panel from the Maesta Altarpiece of Siena, by Duccio, di Buoninsegna, d. 1319 Excerpt from LUKE 24:36B-48: A WELCOMING TABLE An article in the Huffington Post by Henry B. Brinton, dated 18 April 2012. The first thing that Jesus says to his frightened disciples on Easter evening is "Peace be with you" (Luke 24:36). These words are addressed to all of the gathered disciples including Peter, who had denied him (Luke 22:54-62). To prove that he is really alive and anxious to resume his table fellowship with them, Jesus asks for some food and eats a piece of broiled fish in their presence (Luke 24:38-43). Then Jesus tells them, "Everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled." He opens their minds to understand the Scriptures, and says to them that what was written has come true -- the Messiah has suffered and risen from the dead, and now "repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem" (Luke 45-47). Jesus intends to widen the circle of inclusion, and the good news is that many Christians across the theological spectrum are following in his footsteps today. In 2010 Dr Crispin QC said : “You look at people who have a long history of drug addiction and they will, inevitably, be driven to keep committing crimes whilst ever they're drug addicted. What they really need is to whole-heartedly embrace a rehabilitation program. ...They are not going to get that in prison... .” Forum Chair: CES President, Rev’d. A Passion for Peace is a community oratorio that we are creating for premiere performances by 100–200

singers in April 2015. It is inspired by 1300 women who gathered in The Hague from 12 warring and neutral nations at the end of April 1915 for the International Congress of Women, while Australian and New Zealand soldiers were in the first heartsick week of the eight-month Gallipoli campaign. We will perform A Passion for Peace as part of a five-day peace festival at the Albert Hall which will coincide with the centenary congress of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) at The Hague in the same week.

The festival incorporates premiere performances of a new community choral work in oratorio style, A Passion for Peace, by Canberra composer Glenda Cloughley, which celebrates the centenary of the International Congress of Women — a remarkable, but largely forgotten, peace congress held at The Hague at the end of April 1915 with over 1200 women from warring and neutral countries. The resolutions of this remarkable congress informed the formation of the League of Nations (later the UN), and the International Court of Justice, and are still reverberating in international law today. See our website for more information about this project.

Festival for Peace will be held from 28 April to 2 May 2015 at Albert Hall, Canberra. When: 27 April to 1 May 2015 Where: The Albert Hall, Yarralumla For more information or to purchase tickets: http://apassionforpeace.weebly.com FESTIVAL FOR PEACE 28 April – 2 May 2015, Albert Hall, Canberra presented by: A Chorus of Women

featuring: world premiere performances of A Passion for Peace by Glenda Cloughley At the end of April, Canberra’s community women’s chorus, A Chorus of Women, will bring a fresh, life-enhancing perspective to First World War commemorations in a Festival for Peace with music, forums, workshops, displays and events for children. The festival is inspired by over 1200 women from 12 warring and neutral nations who met in The Hague for the only peace conference of the First World War. This International Congress of Women – held during the same week as the Anzacs’ Gallipoli landings in April 1915 –passed visionary resolutions aimed at ending the war and establishing permanent peace. Their resolutions subsequently informed the establishment of the League of Nations and the International Court of Justice, as well as heralding other advances in international human rights law. The centrepiece of the festival will be premiere performances of A Passion for Peace, a community choral and dramatic work in oratorio style by Canberra composer Glenda Cloughley. The work is inspired by the moral courage, love and creative action of the women 100 years ago, as well as present day hopes for the future of our children and grandchildren. Musical direction will be by Johanna McBride and performers will include A Chorus of Women, Arawang Primary School choir and a number of Canberra’s well-known soloists and instrumentalists. The oratorio performances are supported by the ACT Government through an artsACT grant. All welcome. For full program and to buy tickets see www.chorusofwomen.org

BISHOP'S CATHEDRAL

CONVENTION 2015

Jesus saves people, not for heaven but to help God's kingdom happen on earth. As

disciples we are not only called to live out God's marvellous story in the world but given everything needed for the job. So come along and discover your true identity as one of Jesus' disciples and how you might participate in God's wonderful mission today. The convention's speaker is Dr Alison Morgan. Alison works as a thinker and writer for ReSource, a Church of England charity commissioned in 2004 by the Archbishop of Canterbury, and dedicated to serving the church in renewal and mission. Alison is a member of the Archbishops’ College of Evangelists. She works widely in the UK in teaching and training, and she is also the editor and director of ReSource’s discipleship programme for Africa which is used in 15 countries. Alison has a PhD from Cambridge University and has worked alongside her husband Roger in parish ministry while writing a number of books, including The Wild Gospel (Monarch 2004) and its sequel The Word on the Wind:

renewing confidence in the gospel (Monarch 2011). PROGRAM FRIDAY 15 MAY 2015: Registration 4-6pm Inaugural Bishop Barlow lecture by Dr Stuart Piggin. PROGRAM SATURDAY MAY 16 Registration 7-8.30am Rev Dr Alison Morgan sessions 9am - 3.15pm. Bishop Stuart sent some additional information this week: Beloved in Christ, There are exactly 5 weeks left to register for our Cathedral Convention (details below). Hundreds have signed up already and I am looking forward to a very full Cathedral....I trust you are too! On the Friday evening May 15th – as an adjunct to the Convention – I have organised the inaugural Bishop Barlow Lecture. With worship, refreshments, bookstall and fellowship, this aspect of the programme will run from 7.00pm-9.00pm. There is NO CHARGE for the lecture though an offering will be received. Even if some people may not be able to attend the Saturday Convention with Dr Alison Morgan, do please set aside Friday night for the Barlow Lecture. I am also aware that a great many people are unfamiliar with the remarkable ministry of Dr Christopher Barlow – the centenary of whose death we mark this very year - and in whose honour (and name) the lecture is held. To this end, I have attached above

(with permission from the author) a splendid article – published this week in the April Anglican Historical Society Journal. (This has been included with our mail out this week) Would you to set aside half an hour to carefully read this piece? Barlow had foibles to be sure (as the essayist rightly notes) yet he was a pioneer leader and evangelist whose epitaph on the Communion Table in our Cathedral is something to which all pastors aspire, ‘He loved his people and they loved him’. Our inaugural Bishop Barlow lecturer is Dr Stuart Piggin. Do please read more about Stuart here http://www.cte.mq.edu.au/staff/associate_professor_stuart_piggin/ Stuart’s topic – one that I invited him to consider and present is - 'Times of Refreshing': Christian Revival in Rural Australia. Dr Piggin has written extensively in this area both for the academy and for popular reading. For a sense of his style and emphases do refer to this piece - https://renewaljournal.wordpress.com/nowhere/local-revivals-in-australia-by-stuart-piggin/ TALKS ON KINGDOM LIFESTYLES with Julie Mustard, Bethel Church, Redding, California US.
