From the Pastor’s Desk...

In our present day “hi-tech” environment, many of us have smartphones, iPads, and desktop and laptop computers for personal/business use. Many (not all of us) spend a great deal of time on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or “texting” each other in an effort to “remain connected” to other people. This so-called “social media” has its drawbacks and problems. They do, in spite of the headaches they may create, keep us in constant contact with one another.

Many people, however, find that being “virtually” connected with each other is unsatisfactory. A personal call, with an exchange of voices, is still preferable to a great many folks. The readings for this Sunday stress for us what it really means to remain connected to the life-giving energy at the very core of our lives. Jesus used a very “untech” metaphor or picture to describe our most necessary relationship with Him: He is the vine, we are the branches.

Jesus Christ – His person, His ministry, His teaching – is, all at the same time, our model, source, and lifeblood of our relationship with God. He reminds us in the Gospel that “apart from me you can do nothing.” This example from nature, how branches draw their life from the larger vine or plant, shows us how important our “being connected” with Jesus Christ is for us as disciples. Without the life that comes from Jesus Christ, we can do nothing. Cut some branches off a tree and you know what happens to them – they dry up and you throw them away.

Consider how often – or if at all – you feed your necessary relationship with Jesus Christ. God’s grace is so necessary in our lives if we are to remain living, healthy, dynamic Christians who never tire of bearing the crosses of life and the burdens of others. God resides in us, and we need to remain connected to this vital source of life.

Have a good week!

Fr. Bill Arnold

Sharing His Love, Encouraging Hope, the theme of the 2018 Bishop’s Annual Appeal inspires us, as people of Faith, to share the

love that God has for us, which can often bring hope to those who might not have felt His love. Works of kindness and help, in sometimes the smallest way, can bring about a profound change in a person’s life.

Through the Bishop’s Annual Appeal, we have an opportunity to bring about a positive change in the lives of many of God’s people. Through your generosity, you are supporting the various ministries and programs that are so vital in spreading His love. Next weekend is Commitment Weekend for the Appeal, at which time you can make your gift or pledge. Holy Spirit Parish has been asked to raise $51,380.14. We can accomplish this if, after prayerful consideration, everyone gives what they can. Any amount raised over our goal will be returned to our parish to be used for our particular needs.

Thank you to all St. Philip Parishioners who contribute weekly/monthly to the support of our parish. Last week’s special collection for Fr. Ministry Schedule: Sunday, May 6, 2018 – 9:00 a.m. Lector: Tom KitsmillerServer: Julia FoutsEucharistic Ministers: Carole Burkey, Becky Fouts

Lectors, Servers, Eucharistic Ministers: Minister scheduling for June through September is in progress. All unavailability requests must be submitted by May 7th. We are in need of ministers for all areas. If you or someone you know, perhaps a college student home for the summer or someone newly confi rmed, would be willing to give one hour each month to participate more fully in the Mass, let Marti know. As a sister parish, we welcome Holy Spirit members to participate in our ministries.

Bishop’s Annual Appeal 2018: Next week begins our ten-week campaign for the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. We, as St. Philip Parishioners, have done well in the last two years, exceeding the goal given us by the Diocese.

Our $10,000+ refund “over goal” is helping to remodel the restrooms in our church. That refund (our contributions) has been supplemented by a $10,000 grant from the Catholic Foundation.

I hope you will consider a gift to this year’s campaign. This is our diocese, our church, and if we don’t contribute to the needs of the present and the future, who will or should? Please give your contribution serious thought and pledge with your heart.

Additional St. Philip InformationPlease remember in your prayers all the sick, homebound or recovering in our parish, especially Bob Brooks, Leroy Carter, Anne Erdy, Becky Fouts, Betty Heath, Jo Quinn, and Della Varacalli.

St. Philip Feast Day will be celebrated on May 3rd, with a

reception in the rectory following the 9:00 a.m. Mass. Please plan to attend and celebrate our parish patron.

Philip was born in Bethsaida, Galilee. He may have been a disciple of John the Baptist and is mentioned as one of the Apostles in the lists of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and in Acts. Aside from the lists, he is mentioned only in John in the New Testament. He was called by Jesus Himself and brought Nathanael to Christ. Philip was present at the miracle of the loaves and fishes, when he engaged in a brief dialogue with the Lord, and was the Apostle approached by the Hellenistic Jews from Bethsaida to introduce them to Jesus.

Just before the Passion, Jesus answered Philip’s query to show them the Father, but no further mention of Philip is made in the New Testament beyond his listing among the Apostles awaiting the Holy Spirit in the Upper Room. According to tradition, he preached in Greece and was crucified upside down at Hierapolis, under the Emperor Domitian. (catholic.org)

Pardon our Mess: Our restrooms in the church are being updated. During this time there will only be one restroom available for use. Please be courteous since this one restroom will be available to all. We are

grateful to the Columbus Catholic Foundation for awarding us a $10,000.00 grant to assist us in the payment of this project. We anticipate the project to last 6-8 weeks.
