Are You Called?

Every year generous Christ Church parishioners provide gifts and food to hundreds of families and individuals in Chicago who simply can’t afford their own Christmas celebra-tions. This year, not surprisingly, there are a record number of families who have nowhere else to turn.

“I never thought I’d be one of these people,” said Vernette, mother of 3 young children who was forced to register for the Christmas Angels program for the fi rst time this year. “I’ve always taken care of my own family. But last year I lost my job, and we had to move out of our apartment to stay with a friend. I can barely afford to feed my kids, much less buy them gifts. I’m so ashamed – but I want them to have some kind of Christmas, so I’m asking for help.”

This is one of Christ Church’s most important outreach ministries. You literally give the gift of Christmas. And when you do, you’ll enjoy your own Christmas that much more, knowing you made a difference in someone’s life. “Last year we bought a beautiful doll for the little girl in our Christmas family. When I woke up on Christmas morning I loved thinking about how happy she’d be when she opened her gift,” said one young parishioner.

Do You Want to Be a Christmas Angel? You can adopt a family. We are also gratefully ac-cepting cash donations, which the committee will use to shop for gifts and food for senior citizens, homeless individuals and Episcopal Agency residents.

Do You Enjoy Wrapping Gifts? If so, come to one of our Christmas Angel Workshops, beginning November 2nd in the Great Hall at the Parish House. The workshops will take place weekly throughout November on Wednesdays, 12 noon – 3pm, and Thursdays, 9:30 am - 12:30 pm. This year there we will also hold workshops on two Saturdays, November 5th and 12th from 9 am - 12 noon.

In the words of one of our 2010 Christmas Angels recipients: “Your giving embodies the spirit of our savior, Jesus Christ. What you did for us reminded me that God is right there beside me even when things look really bad.”

On Thursday, September 29th, parishioners were invited to gather in the McClain Room to hear news from our companion diocese in South Sudan. We were pleased to welcome back The Rt. Rev. Joseph Garang Atem, Bishop of the Diocese of Renk in the Episcopal Church of Sudan. Ac-companying Bp. Joseph -- and traveling to the United States for the fi rst time -- was Chief Bior Kuir Aguer Deng, leader of the Dinka tribe in the Renk area, and one of the founders of the Episcopal Church of Sudan in Renk.

A New NationMuch has changed in his homeland since Bp. Joseph visited us last November. Following a suc-cessful referendum on independence in the south, the Republic of South Sudan became Africa’s newest nation on July 9, 2011. After nearly two decades of civil war followed by a fragile peace, the south gained independence, splitting Sudan -- Africa’s largest country by area -- in two.

“We are, fi rst, so grateful for your prayers,” began Bp. Joseph. “You stood by us when we needed you. You prayed to God for us, and we thank you for that.”

According to Bp. Joseph and Chief Bior, the people are very grateful for independence, but there is much work ahead. Their new nation lacks the infrastructure to meet the needs of its people. Housing, food, water, and medical care are all in short supply. The Diocese of Renk is located in the Upper Nile State of South Sudan, sticking up like a thumb along the border between north and south. Many people who had been living in the north before independence have sought refuge there. The Diocese of Renk fi nds itself on the front-lines of a humanitarian crisis, and is working hard to limit the casualties of peace.

Our Companion ParishBp. Joseph thanked us for our ongoing fi nancial support of Fr. Daniel and his lay ministers in our companion parish of St. Michael’s in the rural village of Paloich. He reported that the govern-ment of South Sudan is in negotiations with the village to relocate its people to “New Paloich,” so that drilling for oil can begin on the site where the village is now located. Pending these negotia-tions, plans to build a more permanent church building are currently on hold.

Renk Senior Secondary SchoolBp. Joseph once again emphasized how important education is to long-term peace. Two years ago, he outlined an ambitious plan to build a secondary school in Renk Town to provide much-needed education for the next generation of leaders. With the support of people across the Diocese of Chicago, great progress has been made, but more remains to be done. The opening of the school has been delayed while construction has continued on the second school building, which includes additional classrooms for students. That building is near completion, but funds are still needed for fi nishing materials, including plaster for the walls, windows, and fl ooring, all of which are estimated to cost approximately $20,000. Bp. Joseph expressed his sincere gratitude to Christ Church for our part in helping to build the school, a place where boys and girls, Chris-tians and Muslims, will be educated together, and will help shape the future of South Sudan.

Pray for Peace“I ask that you keep us in your prayers,” said Bp. Joseph. “We need you now that we have inde-pendence more than ever. By the power of God, we will make it day by day to that place where we are meant to be, in peace, with our brothers and sisters, Muslim, Christian, Arab, African, all of us walking together in peace. If you pray, God will answer.” Amen.

At 4:30 in the morning on October 6 the fi rst customers appeared for the 87th Annual Fall Rummage Sale. She and her girlfriends drove from South Holland, MI determined to be the fi rst French Room shoppers. When the doors opened at 7 am they were the fi rst ones in the door. Tracked down later she said that the very early morning drive was well worth the effort and she planned on being the fi rst in line next year too.

Blessed with perfect weather, which was a very welcome gift after a soggy week of set up, this year’s sale was a mega success both fi nancially and in terms of the size of the crowd. Thousands (literally) of customers shopped in all 31 departments all day long. Right up until closing time at 3 pm there was never a lull in activity. Just ask Pat Kerpan, co-chair in AV, who must have carried at least 25 televisions for customers from the basement of the West Building to the free check tent on Maple Street. Speaking of the check tent…the fi nal $6 of the day came from Check Tent chair John Hoagland. You might wonder how our free customer service tent generated revenue. A grateful customer insisted on tipping John and his crew. It was just that kind of day.

Treasurer’s Report: Kathy Shanley reported that we continue to be generally on track. Our fi nancial results through the end of August show a defi cit of $56,000 (against a budgeted defi cit of $90,000). One category of revenue, contributions not pledged, is running behind budget ($75,500 budgeted vs. $18,975 received). Pledges $614,000 collected out of $1,030,000, which is generally in line with historical patterns.

Interim Rector’s Report: Interim Rector Jeanne Stewart reported that the program year is underway. The classrooms are well staffed. The Taize service on September 11 was put on in connection with the Winnetka Interfaith Council, and we had over 100 people. We had a large turnout for Evensong. The Tent Party was also very successful, with record attendance and record amounts raised ($17,000) for Rummage.

Curate’s Report: Curate Jim Harrison reported that confi rmation will have a similar format to prior years. Confi rmation classes will be on Sunday afternoons, to allow for a longer period of contact with the confi rmands. Jim is recruiting new acolytes and youth readers and lectors. Stewardship Report: Doug Peterson reported that the materials for the stewardship campaign are progressing. The brochure will be similar to last year’s brochure. The fi rst letter will cover a more spiritual side of stewardship. The second letter will be the stewardship package. Formation: Jeanne Stewart reported that church school is underway and the classrooms are staffed. Friday morning services of Morning Prayer have begun at 7:00 a.m. Planning for the Advent series is underway. As in the past, there will be worship at 6:00, followed by dinner, and then a forum, all on Wednesday nights.

Global Mission: Jenny Smith reported that the Water for Hope project is in a bit of a holding pattern right now, with the money raised being held for next year for use by Global Mission. This Thursday from 6:30 – 8:00 there will be a reception and program for The Rt. Rev. Joseph Garang Atern, Bishop of the Diocese of Renk, Sudan and Chief Bior, Dinka Tribal Leader, dealing with the referendum making South Sudan a new nation.

Member Development: Kathleen Lloyd-Jones reported that we had 5 new families join Christ Church. Kickoff Sunday was a success. The Kickoff Picnic served about 150 people. Enrollment for Foyer Groups is ongoing, with groups put together by mid-October. The Newcomers Party is coming up on October 23.

Outreach: Julie Flood reported that the new format for the Ministries Fair as part of the luncheon on Kickoff Sunday was successful. There was some new conversation and additional volunteers, but Julie thinks it is important to have a regular conversation throughout the year. Rum-mage is in full swing and ready to go. The Tent Party was a huge success, with an all-electronic invitation and RSVP system. Christmas Angels provided 34 back-to-school backpacks with left over funds. We have received some early requests from families. We have committed to the same number of families, but the size of the families is larger. We will need to raise $20,000 in addition to having parishioners adopt families. We touch 700 – 800 people with this program. The soup kitchen is in great shape, and the email system is working very well. Meals at Home has added one volunteer, but also had another volunteer retire. We need another regular driver and a couple of regular subs.

Pastoral Care: Heath Missner reported that there are a number of very ill parishioners. The parish is providing the most gentle support in companionship, meals, rides to the doctor, and altar fl owers.

Convention Delegates Election: Diocesan Convention is November 18 – 19 at the Westin Hotel in Lombard. Jim McGee, Shay Robertson and Nina Gray were elected convention delegates for Christ Church.

Other Business: Doug Hambleton provided an update on the Search Committee. Twenty-six candidates have applied. The committee has completed 10 phone interviews, with 3 members of the committee on the phone for approximately 90 minutes with carefully thought out ques-tions. There are common questions for all candidates, with additional questions tailored for the individual candidate. We are arranging on-site visits for a couple of candidates. Other candidates are still in process. We are pleased with the candidates we are seeing, along with the number of candidates. The process is going well, and the timeline still should work. We hope to call someone by the end of the year. We anticipate some-where around 6 candidates with 3 likely to be invited to Christ Church.

Dietrich Knoer briefed the Vestry on the status of the renovations to the Rectory. The budget for repairs is on-track.

Christ Church Christmas Angels

As the holidays approach, we who are blessed with so much are certainly called to remember that there are those for whom this time of year will only bring pain and anxiety. For many – especially this year – Christmas will be a day just like any other, fi lled with worry, heartache and hopelessness.

But you can make a difference, by becoming a Christ Church Christmas Angel. This year our parish is responsible for providing gifts, food and critical necessities for:

More than 100 desperate families with little or no income Over 50 struggling and lonely Senior Citizens Over 150 residents of six Episcopal agencies 50 homeless men and women

How Can You Help?

1. Adopt a family. We will provide you with the name, age, sizes and a “wish list” for each family member, which you will use to purchase gifts and food coupons for the family. Families range in size from 1 to 6 people, so you can choose how many people you would like to shop for.

2. Make a cash donation. The Christmas Angels committee will use these funds to shop for senior citizens, homeless men and women, and residents of Episcopal agencies.

This is one of our most important outreach ministries. Every dollar you spend or donate goes directly to those who need it most. And best of all, your Christmas will be fi lled with the joy of knowing that you touched the lives of people with nowhere to turn.

Questions? Please call Julie Flood at (847) 920-1006.
