WELCOME TO OUR NEW BISHOP!

Pope Francis has named Father J. Mark Spalding, a priest of the Archdiocese of Louisville, to be the 12th Bishop of Nash-ville. The appointment was publicized at noon in Rome, 5 a.m. central time, on Tuesday November 21, 2017

Bishop-elect Spalding said his first Mass at the Cathedral of the Incarnation on Tuesday

morning, November 21st! He will be officially installed as bishop on February 2, 2018.

He is a native of Fredricksburg and in 2011 he be-came the vicar-general of the Archdiocese. He has been a priest since August, 1991 and has held a number of positions in Kentucky.

At Mass, Bishop-elect Spalding said, “Loving God, be with us and with me...as I shepherd the Diocese of Nashville. At the present time, Rev. Michael Johnston is serving as the Administrator of Nash-ville, where he has been since the unfortunate death of Most Rev. David Choby. Rev. Johnston will continue in that position until Rev. Spalding is ordained as bishop and takes office.

Bishop-elect Spalding said he will take his episco-pal motto from Mary’s hymn of praise, the Magnif-icat. “God has lifted up the lowly.”

“With God’s grace and Mary’s yes as my guide, I will seek always to walk in the footsteps of Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd,” he said.

Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

This Sunday is a Solemnity of the Church and is a relatively recent addition to the Western litur-gical calendar, having been instituted in 1925 by Pope Pius XI . It replaces the last Sunday in Or-dinary Time, and the week following is the final week in Ordinary Time. This day is also called the Feast of Christ the King.

According to St. Cyril of Alexandria, “Christ has dominion over all creatures, ...by his essence and by his nature...because he is “... consubstantial with the Father, has all things in common with him, and therefore has necessarily supreme and absolute dominion over all things created….it follows that to Christ angels and men are sub-ject...he is our Redeemer...we are no longer our own property, for Christ has purchased us ‘with a great price;’ our very bodies are the ‘members of Christ.’ Also, God bestowed upon Christ the nations of the world as His special possession and dominion. " “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me." (Matthew 28:18)

Next Sunday, December 3rd, we will celebrate the First Sunday of Advent !.

Memorial of St. Andrew, Apostle Thursday, November 30th

Andrew is a Greek name, and as far as we know, the saint is not mentioned in the Bible by a Hebrew name—in contrast to his brother Simon, whom we call Peter. And of course, we know Peter is our first Holy Father! St. Andrew was probably born in the Galilee in about 5 or 6 B. C.

He and St. Peter were fishermen by trade, so the Bible says that Jesus called them to be "fishers of men." Gospel of Matthew (Matt 4:18–22) and Gospel of Mark (Mark 1:16–20) . Jesus spotted these two brothers as he was waking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee.

Andrew had been a follower of John the Baptist, but when he laid eyes on Jesus, he immediately knew him to be the Messiah. He ran and got Peter and brought Peter into Jesus’ presence. Andrew is referred to as being present on many important occasions as one of the disciples more closely attached to Jesus. He told Jesus about the boy with the loaves and fishes (John 6:8), and when Philip wanted to tell Jesus about certain Greeks seeking Him, he passed it through Andrew first (John 12:20–22). Andrew was present at the Last Supper. He was one of the four disciples who came to Jesus on the Mount of Olives to ask about the signs of Jesus' return at the "end of the age."

Tradition says that Andrew preached in far-off parts of the Roman Empire and was martyred by crucifixion on an X-shaped cross!
