Pilgrimage to Oakland Cathedral Nov. 12th;

Saying Farewell to Dn. Bill

Pilgrimage to Oakland Cathedral

Transi on means change, and change is what our journey of faith is all about. Throughout our life we are invited to walk this journey with the Lord and his church – a transi onal process. Even if we take a detour and get completely off track, Jesus is there to offer us forgiveness and welcome us back. He never stops pastoring us as he nurtures us with His sacraments, His spiritual “way sta ons,” which bring us reconcilia on, strength, encouragement, and direc on on His Way to the journey’s end: heaven itself.

Occasionally the Church through its pope gives us an opportunity for a special grace on the journey. I’m referring to the plenary indulgence

Pope Francis has granted to the Church during this Jubilee Year of Mercy which ends on November 20, 2016.

Join us Saturday, November 12, as together we fulfill one of the condi ons for this plenary indulgence, passing through the Holy Doors at the Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland. You can meet us on the Cathedral plaza at 2121 Harrison Street in Oakland at 10:00 am or you can come to the St. Raymond Plaza in front of the church at 9:00 am if you are interested in carpooling. A er passing through the Holy Doors we will have me to pray together at the cathedral and have a tour of this interes ng and inspiring church built for God’s glory and the spiritual benefit of the faithful of the Diocese of Oakland. If you like, bring a lunch to enjoy on the Cathedral plaza a er our tour.

“Just what is a plenary indulgence?” you may ask. It is "the remission before God of the temporal punishment due for sins already forgiven as far as their guilt is concerned." The first thing to note is that forgiveness of a sin is separate from punishment for the sin. Through the Sacrament of Confession we obtain forgiveness, but we aren't let off the hook as far as punishment goes. Indulgences are two kinds: par al and plenary. A par al indulgence removes part of the temporal punishment due for sins. A plenary indulgence removes all of it. This punishment may come either in this life, in the form of various sufferings, or in the next life, in purgatory.

Here are the usual condi ons for receiving a plenary indulgence:

A plenary indulgence can be gained only once a day. To obtain it, the faithful must, in addi on to being in the state of grace: • have the interior disposi on of

complete detachment from sin, even venial sin;

• have sacramentally confessed their sins;

• receive the Holy Eucharist (it is certainly be er to receive it while par cipa ng in Holy Mass, but for the indulgence only Holy Communion is required); and

• pray for the inten ons of the Supreme Pon ff.

It is good to have completed all of the above at the me one passes through the Holy Doors, but is granted if they are completed within 20 days of that

me either before or a er.

Deacon Bill

Transi ons are part of everyone’s life. Deacon Bill Henderson is about to transi on by moving with his wife Cindy to the Reno area to be near their family. Next weekend is Dn. Bill’s last official weekend with us at St. Raymond. I know we will all miss him greatly. Please join me in wishing Dn. Bill a fond farewell at all masses this weekend. Come to the recep on planned for him a er the noon Mass on Sunday November 13th in Moran Hall. I am deeply grateful for Dn. Bill’s ministry with us. You have been a wonderful minister and friend to us all. Dn. Bill, “Un l we meet again…”

Please note: In prepara on for the pilgrimage there will be an extra opportunity for the Sacrament of Confession on Friday November 11 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm in the church.

Don’t miss this opportunity as we take advantage of Pope Francis’ invita on, “That the Jubilee Indulgence may reach each one as a genuine experience of God's mercy, which comes to meet each person in the Face of the Father who welcomes and forgives, forge ng completely the sin commi ed.” – Pope Francis, Le er to Archbishop Rino Fisichella, Sept. 1, 2015.

First Reading 2 Maccabees 7:1-2,9-14 Responsorial Psalm Psalm 17:1,5-6,8,15 Second Reading 2 Thessalonians 2:16—3:5 Gospel Reading Luke 20:27-38 Background on the Gospel Reading In today's Gospel, we hear about an encounter between Jesus and some Sadducees. The Sadducees were a party of Judaism ac ve in Jesus' me, descended from the priestly family of Zadok. They were literal interpreters of the wri en Law of Moses, which means that they were in disagreement with the posi on of the Pharisees, who offered an oral interpreta on of the Law of Moses.

The Sadducees are described in this Gospel as opponents to the belief in resurrec on. In the dialogue presented here, we see an example of the means of disputa on that was common in first century Judaism. The Sadducees use the example of Levirate marriage, found in the Law of Moses, to disprove belief in

the resurrec on. According to Deuteronomy 25:5-10, if a man died without producing an heir, the man's brother should marry his wife and the offspring of this union would inherit the property and carry on the name of the man who had died. The Sadducees use this as an example to challenge belief in the resurrec on.

Jesus argues from the same wri en Law of Moses to show that there is resurrec on. Using the texts from the Book of Exodus (Chapter 3) that describe Moses' encounter with God in the burning bush, Jesus shows that God is the God of the living, not the dead. Here Jesus uses the same method and texts of the Sadducees to counter them. As the Gospel text suggests, he beat them at their own game!

More importantly, in this discourse Jesus shows the limits of our imagina ons when it comes to eternal life. The Sadducees argued against resurrec on because of the limits of earthly existence. They did not imagine another possibility for existence and rela onship with God. Jesus proposes that the possibili es of resurrected life are beyond our imagina ons. Jesus' conclusion suggests something else as well: To spend me worrying about resurrected life is to miss the point. The point is eternal rela onship with God is possible, for God is the God of the

living, “. . . for to him all are alive.”

Treasures from Our Tradi ons In the seventeenth century, English Catholics, many of them wealthy and well educated , looked to the American colonies as a place to regain a measure of religious freedom. In Ireland, the so-called penal laws were even harsher than in England , as a minority Parliament tried to force the conversion of the popula on by denying the majority poli cal and economic power. Beginning in 1691, laws were passed that punished dissenters, principally Catholics, but also causing hardship for Jews, Quakers, and others. There were acts forbidding "mixed marriage" or sending children "beyond the seas" for schooling. Catholics were taxed at double the common rate, barred from the legal professions and from university, and not allowed to build churches or own a decent horse.

In 1793 the situa on began to change, as it became clear that the economic persecu on would not drive the majority away from Catholicism. Gradually, laws were repealed un l-by 1829- freedom was won, although Catholics at university were ineligible for honors, and un l the 1920s and the Republic, the Church of Ireland was the state church, funded by the taxes of all ci zens. 5th Annual Thanksgiving Dinner We are now making plans for the 5th annual dinner this November. Over the years, we have seen an increase

in guests as we reach out to seniors, homebound, veterans, and low-income singles and families in our Tri-Valley community. Thanks to a generous dona on in memory of long me parishioner Tom McCreary, we were able, and con nue, to serve dinner in style with colorful linens, china plates, and glassware. Guests are served a tradi onal dinner and encouraged to relax and enjoy the company with those at their table and enjoy the musical entertainment provided by volunteers. Spiritual Works of Mercy The Thanksgiving dinner reminds us of the Corporal Works of Mercy that help us see the never ending depth of mercy. We cannot help feel joy when so many prac ce the giving of alms and the feeding of the hungry with smiles and open hands. Volunteers and guests feel the fes ve spirit of thanks and giving.

A Ministry of People This outreach ministry began in 2012 with a small core group from St. Raymond, members of other local churches, and the community. The mission evolved as we worked to define our purpose. Looking at the spiritual works of mercy we strove to feed the hungry not just with food but with genuine care and love. We let each guest define “need.” Need is not only financial, but a need of community and companionship. Our visitors receive plates of food from merciful hands, where all delight in the smiles of a common purpose and togetherness. This “living together is an art,” and this communion of people unites religious, public, and private organiza ons to serve others in a way that is “a pa ent art,...a beau ful art. it’s fascina ng” (Pope Francis.)
