Your generosity will brighten the Christmas season for someone. Gifts should be returned by December 9 at Holy Martyrs, Sacred Heart and St. Gregory. Gifts for St. Jude should be returned by December 16.

Holy Martyrs: Gift tags will benefit young people detained at Long Creek Youth Development Center, South Portland. The Center has restrictions, such as the need to accept unwrapped gifts. Please provide a separate gift bag & ribbon. The holiday table will continue with donations for a Christmas meal to benefit local families. ADVENT WREATH KITS ON SALE Available after all Masses on December 1 & 2.

$10.00/complete kit or $3.00/solo box of 4 candles; free resources will also be available for all families

The Catholic Church designates the four weeks before Christmas as Advent, a time to “prepare the way of the Lord” for His coming as our King and Savior at Christmas. By celebrating the liturgy of Advent each year, we call to mind this ancient expectancy of the Messiah. By participating in various time-honored traditions and rituals, Catholic families can engage more fully in the seasons of Advent & Christmas.

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT Our liturgical season’s color is PURPLE.

HOW AM I PREPARING AS I WAIT FOR JESUS’ BIRTH?

Scripture Background: Advent means “the coming of or the moving toward something”. During the season of Advent, we prepare our hearts for Jesus’ first coming, his birth in Bethlehem. The Advent sea-son also tells about Jesus’ promise to come again. This is a sign of God’s never-ending love that we can trust every day of our life. God asks us to be trusting and faithful, not fearful!

The Gospel: Luke 21:25-28, 34-36 A Summary of the vivid points in this Gospel: 1) Jesus’ first coming was his birth in Bethlehem. Jesus promised that

He would come again at the end of time on earth. This is called the Second Coming.

2) No one except our Father in Heaven knows the time or day when this will happen and no one knows how this will happen.

3) When Jesus comes again, the whole earth will see strange and amazing signs of nature. The whole natural world will be on alert in response to Jesus’ coming. Imagine, Jesus coming again so we can all see Him!!

4) At the Second Coming, the whole human population will be able to see Jesus.

5) When that time comes, some will be afraid. But Jesus tells us (those who believe in Him) to hold our heads up high and believe that He has come to save us and to protect us.

6) God/Jesus asks us to be good and faithful people and to be ready, every day. This makes sense. He does not want us to wait to get ready. We are to receive and “see” God today and every day; we are to give our heart and life to God! Then we will be ready for what may come, now or later.

WE PRAY: “Lord Jesus, we want to become the people you created us to be. Give us the grace to work on the things we need to correct or improve during this Advent season. Our Father, who art in Heaven…”

WE TALK: How am I preparing for the birth of Christ, at home, at church, in my communities, in my heart?

WE ACT: We will set up our Advent wreath, light the first purple can-dle, and pray as a family. We will light the candle again during our family meals this week. We will remember someone in our prayers.

PARISH BIBLE RECOMMENDATIONS We have Bibles for all ages at our Bible display station at each church. Please place your cash or check in the provided envelope and place in the collection or give to your church pastoral Leader. Good will offerings also accepted.

A COMPASSIONATE THANK YOU FROM YOUR PARISH KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

In closing Year Four of our Council’s “Pro-Life Drive” for the ABBA Center of Portland, we would like to take a few minutes to let each of you know how much we raised because of your generosity. 2018 was another successful year for us. With your generous gifts, we were

able to collect $2,209.50, which gives us a total of $10,367.80 over the course of the last four years. This year we were very pleased to receive a Special Donation Request of $100.00 from a Parish Family. They have instructed us to send this money to a Pregnancy Center in Augusta. This center is in the process of raising funds to purchase a new Ultra-Sound machine for their clients. So with this special gift and request we were able to help two Pro-Life groups. This year we were asked by a few people if we could supply more information on these Pro-Life centers. Our Council Pro-Life Team will work with the ABBA Center, and our State Knights of Columbus Pro-Life Family in having information on hand for 2019’s Pro-Life Drive. On behalf of your Parish Knights Pro-Life Team, we appreciate your kind donations. A final Thank You to our Pastor Fr. Daniel Greenleaf, Fr. Peter Kaseta, Fr. Paul Marquis, Deacon Dennis Popadak, our Council Membership, and the Parish Office Staff for all their support in making this possible.

WINTER NOTICES Winter is definitely upon us! Please remember to check the parish home page (www.pothe.org) to find out if the offices are closed or if your minis-try or activity is cancelled. If you would like a cancellation posted, please call Melissa Bagdon(553.7158). Please use caution while driving or walking and remember, God understands if weather keeps you home.

As hard as we work to try to keep entrances and surfaces clear, winter in Maine presents challenges. We rely on outside contractors, our own maintenance people, and our amazing parishioner volunteers at each of our four churches. Special thanks go out to all our volunteers who are continually on the lookout and ready to lend a hand!

We appreciate your patience and ask you to move carefully, using the clearest entrances and railings when possible. If you see an issue at any of our churches or buildings, please help us out by posting the issue us-ing the “Maintenance Issues” link on the quick links on the home page and basics page of our website. (https://pothe.org/maintenance-needed)

Thank you, Melissa

THE GREATER FREEPORT COMMUNITY CHORUS PRESENTS... “The Rose I Have in Mind,” a program of traditional and seasonal music, Sacred Heart, Sunday December 9, 2:30 pm. The 70 chorus

members are residents of about 15 Midcoast communities. $10 for adults at door/under 18 free.

WITNESS FOR LIFE

Saturday, December 8, 9:30 am to 10:30 am, Seminarian Joe Moreshead will lead a pro-life rosary outside Planned Parenthood in Portland just off Monument Square. The purpose of this rosary is to be a witness to hope, praying for mothers in crisis pregnan-cies, and a witness to life, quietly witnessing to the darkness of abortion with the light and love of Christ. For more information contact Joe the seminarian at: [email protected].

MARCH FOR LIFE BUS TO WASHINGTON, D.C. THIS JANUARY! January 17 to 19, Every year on the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, thousands of people peacefully

march in protest of abortion and in memory of the lives lost and wounded since the Supreme Court decision in 1972. The diocese of Portland is organizing a bus for high school students and a second bus for adults to go to D.C. from January 17th to January 19th. For more information or to register, contact seminarian Joe Moreshead at [email protected]

TOGETHER WITH ALZHEIMER'S Sacred Heart Rectory, Wednesdays 7:00 pm New and experienced caregivers are welcome to our meetings.

YOU PUT THE “GIVING” IN THANKSGIVING! Thank you from the Thanksgiving Appeal 2018! Parishioners of Holy Eucharist responded generously in late November for food and donations for families in our communities who are struggling financially. At St. Gregory, food baskets were prepared and distributed, extra turkeys were donated to a teen shelter in Auburn, and extra food was given to the Gray food pantry. At St. Jude, the food donations were transferred to the Freeport Community Services where holiday baskets were prepared and cash donations from the Freeport community were given. At Holy Martyrs, holiday baskets were prepared from donations, fresh food was bought to supplement and some donations were held for Christmas food baskets. At Sacred Heart, the food donations were transferred to the Yarmouth food pantry for the holiday baskets to be prepared. Gift cards for food purchases were distributed to individuals & families throughout the Parish area. This program is a good channel for making the holiday a true Thanksgiving. Thank you to the organizers, volunteers and contributors!

DECK THE HALLS SING-A-LONG! Holy Martyrs, Sunday, December 16, after the 10:30 am Mass. You’re invited to an informal gathering after the 10:30 am mass at Holy Martyrs on Sunday, December 16. Get in the Christmas spirit with your fellow parishioners! We will begin with our typical fellowship in the hall with coffee and pastries. At noon, prepare for a “Deck the Halls” experience as your parish choir members and faith formation kiddos unite in singing the classic Christmas carols. All are welcome!
