Dear Parishioners, The corona virus has certainly been the topic of conversation in recent days. Although there has been no reported case in Springfield as I write this column, a train traveling from Chicago to St. Louis was taken out of service to be disinfected because a person on the train may have had the virus. Many assume it is just a matter of time and thus, are frightened. Fear is a healthy emotion if it causes us to use care. However, when fear becomes extreme or unmanageable, hysteria can take over and cause people to act in emotional and irrational ways. We have seen some of this already with people who are hoarding such things as masks and hand sanitizer and others that are charging exorbitant prices for such things. Selfishness, stealing, hiding, even attacking others is often the result of such irrational fear. So how should we respond to the crises? Here are a couple of suggestions. First be informed about the subject. Read about it and get the true facts. The more you know, the less frightening it is. Secondly, be pro-active, not reactive. What should you do and not do in dealing with the threat. What are the common sense steps to take? Our bishop has urged caution, but has not required we change any practices at this time. However, here are some things that could be considered: --You may choose to not shake hands or any other physical contact when it comes to the sign of peace. That does not mean you can’t give the sign of peace. You can still nod, or smile or greet with a friendly word. --You may choose not to take the cup at communion. Even though Jesus told his disciples to “take and eat” and “take and drink”, the church has taught that the fullness of Christ is found in both species. Therefore it is not required to receive both. --You may choose to avoid the holy water fonts. Blessing oneself with holy water is a wonderful reminder of our baptism, but if you are susceptible to sickness, you may wish to refrain from doing so for the time. --You may wish to take communion in the hand rather than on the tongue. Yes, germs can be spread by hand to mouth contact. Where the preference is yours, both ways are considered equally acceptable and reverent by the church. --You may wish to use hand sanitizer or wash your hands to help cut down on the germs. The church has placed hand sanitizers in the entrances for your convenience. As the situation changes, the precautions may also change. I will keep you informed. In the meantime, use caution and common sense in dealing with this virus and do not let fear keep you from acting like a Christian…or from worshipping God. Fr. Jeff

Public Health Concerns: During this time of concern for public health Bishop Paprocki has issued the following precautionary measures that could be applied to our diocese: The exchange of the sign of peace is not suspended, but people may exchange it without shaking hands or other physical contact. The distribution of Holy Communion via the chalice is not suspended, but the faithful should be aware that drinking the Precious Blood from the chalice is optional. Our Lord is fully present and received in either or both species. In Bishop Paprocki’s judgment, the public health threat has NOT become so dire in our diocese to warrant granting a general dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass or to suspend public celebrations of the liturgy, including Mass. Blessed Sacrament School is looking for an early elementary teacher, middle grades teacher, and Spanish teacher for the 2020-2021 school year. Applicants should send a resume and completed certified school staff application to Dawn Klinner, Blessed Sacrament School, 748 W. Laurel, Springfield, IL 62704 or email [email protected]. More information can be found on our school website www.bssbruins.org The Story of Father Kapaun Servant of God Emil Kapaun is the most decorated Chaplain in United States history.
