On 23rd May 1920, Pentecost Sunday, The Beatification of Blessed Oliver Plunkett took place in St Peter’s Basilica, Rome.
On that day in Oldcastle, Co Meath, the parish of his birth Oliver was proudly honoured as one of their own. Flagstaff’s, garlands, banners and flowers adorned the town of Oldcastle
and decorations were also noted at Moylagh and Loughcrew. Solemn High Mass was celebrated in the parish Church. Fr Duffy P.P of Kilskyre preached, paying tribute to the
beatified child of the hills of Oldcastle: ‘Behold a great priest who in his day pleased God and was found just, and in the time of wrath was made a reconciliation.’ Based on a
theme from the Book of Ecclesiasticus. In the afternoon a great Eucharistic procession took place through the town, with large numbers of people coming from Cavan, Westmeath and
Longford. With inclement weather earlier that day, one report stated that many pilgrims showed signs of their long trek to Oldcastle. Marshalled in lines of four, thousands of men lined up while
the children accompanied the women. The procession took a long time to pass, reciting the rosary as they went. The choir sang hymns followed by the brass band who provided the music for the occasion. The celebration concluded after the multitude knelt in front of the altar set up in the Market Square where a Benediction with the Blessed Sacrament was
solemnly given.
Prayer for the Prevention of Coronavirus Creator God and Father of all, You entrust the world to our care, now we turn to you at this time of anxiety. For across this season of new birth and new life moves the shadow of disease and destruction. Lord, give us wisdom to work together for the good of all: watch over those who are threatened by this plague. Guide all who strive to protect people from Coronavirus. We ask this through Christ our Lord Amen.
