Look at the picture on the front of this magazine. Do you sometimes feel like that lighthouse, battered by life, having to withstand one thing after another? Sometimes the battering gets so severe that we crumble and there is no shame in that. As you might expect me to say, the rock of faith can provide us with the armour to withstand some of the shocks and crises that come our way but there are other things that can help whether you have faith or not. One of those things is meditation, where you centre all your attention into the present moment or are guided through a session that leads you to a different healthier perspective on life. Meditation, or contemplation, has a long history in Christendom but as I say, you don’t need faith in order to meditate. We are constantly thinking about how we could best serve the people of Tynemouth and one of the first fruits of that is the start of a series called “Meditation for beginners” on Monday evenings in our parish centre starting this February 13th. See the advert in this magazine or posters in the village. A further thing is the recognition that often, people just need to talk things through with someone trained to just listen and at other times to also suggest various courses of action or advice. This is a more complex thing to offer, and we aim to do this in conjunction with Doctor’s surgeries so look out for this service in the future. Building healthy communities starts by building healthy individuals and we want to help in any way we can. And instead of crumbling we can be like that lighthouse on our pier – standing firm and being strength and light in a turbulent world. Martin

Prayer & Reflection ‘Celebrating the Saints’
Brigid, Abbess of Kildare
Commemoration – 1st February
Brigid, also known as Bride, of humble origin, was born in the latter part of the fifth century just five miles from Kildare. She became the first nun in the monastery there and then its Abbess. Brigid is believed to have been baptised by St Patrick and the stories of her portray a woman of great compassion. She is even said to have been consecrated a bishop by Bishop Ibor, because of her resemblance to the Virgin Mary, but this may have been a story told in order to support the claim of the primacy of the Abbey of Kildare. By her prayers and miracles, she is reputed to have strongly influenced the formation of the Church throughout Ireland, where she is, with St Patrick, the patron saint. She died in about the year 525.
An extract from The Life of St Brigid by Cogitosus
As the chosen one of God, she was indeed a girl of great modesty, who as she grew in years grew also in serenity. Once a lone wild boar which was being hunted charged out of the forest, and in the course of its panicked flight careered into a herd of pigs that belonged to the most blessed Brigid. She noticed its presence and she blessed it. Immediately the creature lost its sense of fear and settled down quietly amongst the herd of pigs. See, my friends, how even the wild beasts and animals could not resist either her bidding or her will, but served her docilely and humbly…
Brigid, you were a woman of peace. You brought harmony where there was conflict.
You brought light to the darkness. You brought hope to the downcast.
May the mantle of your peace cover those who are troubled and anxious,
and may peace be firmly rooted in our hearts and in our world. Inspire us to act justly and to reverence all God has made.
Brigid, you were a voice for the wounded and the weary. Strengthen what is weak within us.
Calm us into a quietness that heals and listens. May we grow each day
into greater wholeness in mind, body and spirit.
Amen.

On 13th
January, there was an extremely high Spring Tide along the east coast, waves were breaking on the lower paths of the promenade and spectacularly high the length of the pier. It was an amazing sight watching them break so close, although one or two people got soaked having got a bit too close, when extra-large waves broke now and again, giving them a soaking! There are never two days the same at the coast, but whether the water is rough or calm we learn to respect what God has made (Genesis 1:10). The following reflection by Jan Sutch Pickard of the Iona Community reminds us that God is present in our lives every day, whether we recognise him or not.
Another day – a day that God has made – the sky is mother-of-pearl, like the inside of a sea shell; the sea is moving darkness, and dancing with light as the sun rises over Mull. Every stone has its own shadow, every blade of grass is shining. Alarm clocks go off, feet hit the floor, porridge is on the stove, bells ring, feet are on the stairs, toast smells good, folk gather, grace is said, a hundred cups of tea are poured, the sun climbs the sky, and the big bell rings for worship. Feet are on the road. Now the world is on the move, wheels are turning, ships putting out to sea, cows coming to the milking, shops opening, a catch being landed, computers being switched on, school bells ringing.
On the far side of Mull bus engines start up wheels begin to turn. As the sun travels across the sky,
folk travel toward Iona, to the ferry: the day visitors, tourists, trippers,
pilgrims on their way at the beginning of the day –
the day that God has made.

Mission Giving….
This year the PCC, when deliberating the charitable giving, decided that instead of many smaller donations we make fewer larger donations which would have a greater impact on those receiving them. Here are some snippets from letters we have received … Walking With (a charity in Wallsend, which supports and provides relief for asylum seekers) – thank you very much for the kind donation, we are very grateful and it will help keep Walking With going in the coming year. pcdc (practical compassion for destitute children - a charity working in Bethlehem) – thank you for such a wonderful and generous gift, there simply aren’t words to describe your love and kindness to our children. Your money is to be used to help several children, all at different levels of neediness. Their material needs can range from books and clothing, medical and dental health and in some cases paying for gas bottles to heat their unheated houses in a biting winter. Womankind (a charity which works to end discrimination and violence against women around the world) – thank you for the generous gift which will enable us to continue our work. For example, in Ethiopia, our partner Association for Women’s Sanctuary is providing vital support in their safe house to women who have fled violent homes, and are often victims of rape. Lazarus Home for Girls (a charity which provides a home and clinic for girls in Palestine) the board of trustees extend their warmest greetings and their profound gratitude for your prayers and financial support. The donation will be used for the building fund. Safe Families for Children – thank you to everyone at Holy Saviour’s for your generous donation. It has been good getting to know the church family at Holy Saviour’s over the past few weeks, and we are delighted to see more and more people coming on board with our charity, and we are excited to see the impact these individuals, and you as a church, will have on the families in our community. Children in Distress (a charity which cares for children in Romania) it is wonderful to hear from old friends. Our challenges continue, so your support is much valued. The charity continues to offer a small but immensely important paediatric care service for children, who otherwise would have had little help or care.

“Situations Vacant”…
Russell Anderson has asked to take a sabbatical from his serving and sidesman duties at Holy Saviours Church for a period of time. Russell’s dedication to Holy Saviours has been remarkable. He has been a stalwart of the servers and sidesman rotas for many, many years and his service and dedication to Holy Saviours is truly appreciated by us all. In addition to his service to Holy Saviours, Russell also is a regular ‘wheeler’ at North Tyneside General Hospital.
Russell’s sabbatical leaves us with a gap to fill as a server and reader on the second and fifth Sundays of the month at the 8.00 am service, and as a sideman on the first Sunday of the month at Evensong.
The Churchwardens would be grateful if anyone who currently attends these services, and would like to think of offering their time to be a server or sidesman to cover Russell’s absence, to please step forward and let either Diane or myself know.
We look forward to being inundated with offers.

The Bay Food Bank
A big thank you to everyone who continues to donate food or cash to the Bay Foodbank. The response during December and up to Christmas was overwhelming and very much appreciated.
Quote from the Food Bank “Every Christmas, the number of donations we receive goes through the roof! We love to see people coming by to drop food off, having a look around, asking questions and just generally getting involved. It’s a great time of year for community outreach and for educating people – especially for families who like to bring their young children along so that they too can understand the needs of people in the surrounding area. Unfortunately, we don’t have the time (or email space!) to thank everyone who donated to us over the Christmas period, but we would like everyone to know just how thankful we are – as I’m sure our service users are also. Thank you!”
It is wonderful to see donations continuing to fill the box in the Parish Centre, items such as long-life orange juice, long-life milk, tins, dried pasta, sauces, rice, biscuits and treats are just a few of the food items along with soap, toilet rolls etc…

Christmas came and went in a blur of parties, food and fun and we are now resuming our weekly activities. The Scouts enjoyed an evening at the local bowling alley while the Cubs sent a Christmas card to Buckingham Palace and received a suitable acknowledgment.
We spent a very special evening in Tynemouth Priory where we celebrated the 100th Birthday of Cub-Scouting. Baden-Powell began Wolf Cubs all those years ago and, although now known as Cub-Scouts, this sections fundamental principles have remained the same. A large number of Cubs met in the Priory grounds where, under a full moon and holding candles, they renewed the Cub promise. I am sure Lord Baden-Powell would have approved!
We then held a party in our own Church Hall and it was during this occasion that a unique event occurred when Mildred Robson, who, of course, committed many years to our Cub-Scout pack, proudly presented a Leadership award to her own grandson Kieran Lydall. I am grateful to Kieran who is now leading the Cubs weekly meetings while his Mum, Fiona Lydall, has a well-earned break. I am also indebted to Ashley Adams and Paul Wass who have agreed to help us with the Scout Troop .Our numbers continue to be very healthy and it is always
good to add to our Leadership team.
Readers are reminded that our HQ on Manor Road is available for children’s parties and other suitable activities.....the rates are very reasonable and the income greatly helps us to maintain the building. Dinner Club….
Our Dinner Club will be Thursday 16 February, 6.30 for 7pm. The venue as usual will be Tynemouth Golf Club, with a delicious three course dinner, followed by tea/coffee. Our guest speaker will be the Revd Timothy Duff.
Tynemouth Golf Club is a marvellous venue, and Dean creates a mouth-watering menu. There is a sign-up sheet at the back of the church for menu choices.
Dusting & Gardening Dates …. The team meet every other Friday from 9am onwards to clean the church and the Parish Centre, and tidy the garden - followed by coffee and chat at about 10.45am. If you are able to give any time the next few dates are:

Walking for fun…. an informal walking group which meets on the second
Thursday and the last Saturday of the month for a country or coastal walk of about 6 miles. Walks are likely to take us across fields, stiles, and on paths which may be
muddy, hence suitable walking gear and footwear are essential. We meet outside Church at 9.30 and share cars to our destination. We always end the walk with a visit to a tea room; scones, jam and cake are essential ingredients of the walk!
