Village News begins
on p. 19
From the Editorial Assistant
Welcome to 2012, and to this “changeover” issue of the Parish News. It’s been a privilege to work on it with Terry, and to realise afresh just how much dedication and hard work he has put into the magazine over all these years. I know everyone will want to thank Terry very much for his service to the community, in this and in so many other ways, and to wish him all the very best in retirement. You can read his Editorial Comments on page 19.
How the new system works We aim to run the Parish News with a rota of volunteer editors using an IT template specially developed for us by Helen Thomson. All our contributors who send in their text by email are asked to send it in future to a dedicated Parish News address, [email protected]
Anyone who would rather hand in their piece on paper is asked to give it to Terry Spalding at Homeleigh Cottage, Pound Hill, Bacton, who has kindly offered to act as a “postbox”. If you want an article to appear in a particular issue of the Parish News, you need to send it in before the 15th day of the previous month – so items for the February issue need to be in before 15th January. If you’d like to send in items of general interest which don’t need to be published at any particular time, that would be very helpful, because there are often spaces that need to be filled. Obviously it’s going to be a bit confusing for everyone while we settle down to the new system – Terry is a hard act to follow! - and at first you may find that our regular items aren’t where you expect them to be. But we hope very much that the system will prove its value, and we will be able to go on enjoying our monthly instalment of snapshots from the many exciting activities happening in our three village communities. If you have any suggestions about what could be included in future issues of the Parish News, please send them in!
Many thanks to Alan Couldridge who contributed this month’s front cover. We hope to see many more original works of art in future editions.

Editorial Comment
When I retired from the editorship of Parish News I did not expect to be asked to write the editorial for the first edition of the new magazine or write much of its content. I hope you like the new version and I wish its successive editors well. To me being used to the way I did things this magazine reminds me of Tesco’s in Stowmarket. As soon as you get used to where everything is they are moved to a new location!
My apologies for the way the advertisements have taken over the magazine. I am assured that is what is required and after all it is the adverts which provide most of the money for printing and may eventually lead to this magazine being free. A Happy New Year to you all.
Terry Spalding
Ancient Weather Lore When small clouds were seen scudding before large ones, they were called “water carts”, and rain was sure to follow; and there was a formation known as Noah’s Ark (i.e. two small clouds facing each other and resembling two crescents) which was considered the forerunner of continual rain. Then, if the wind blew strongly from the south at day-break, it foretold rain before night.
For those of you who contribute to the magazine regularly, could you please e-mail your information to [email protected], by the 15th of the month at the latest, and if you don’t have internet access, or prefer to submit your information on paper, please give it to Terry Spalding, Homeleigh Cottage, Pound Hill, Bacton. If you would like to help with editing please e-mail [email protected] or write to: Parish News Editors, c/o Bacton Rectory, Church Road, Bacton IP14 4LJ.

STOWMARKET AND DISTRICT LIONS CLUB Once again, Stowmarket Lions Club will be holding their annual charity shop at Stowmarket Boys Brigade Hall, Combs Lane, over the Easter period of 2012. This is a good opportunity to dispose of those items that you no longer have a use for and to give others the chance of a bargain - all in aid of Stowmarket Lions charities. We are happy to receive donations of good condition furniture and beds, bric-a-brac, garden tools, books, records, DVDs and much more. Please note that legislation prevents us from handling settees and armchairs with foam seats unless fireproofed, or any electrical goods. No jumble please. Collections will start in the New Year from Stowmarket and surrounding villages. Please call us on 0845 833 5114 to arrange a time for collection.
Parish News – Earls Green
After many years as a volunteer Mrs Miriam Black has decided to give up delivering the Parish News in Earls Green. Miriam tells me she has done this since the magazine began, what an achievement in community spirit, thank you so much Miriam.
Now of course we are looking for another volunteer, this is a round of 22 magazines which are delivered once a month, with the subscriptions being collected each spring. If you think this is something you could do please call me on 781772.

Villages News
Cotton seeks Local History Recorder The recording of the history of our Suffolk village is an important role for anybody who wants to ensure
the survival of such valuable material for future local historians and for the interest of local residents. Much
of Cotton’s fascinating historical documentation and material is in the possession of various local residents. To preserve these they need to be brought together and kept in one archive by Cotton’s own Local History Recorder. Such a person would also keep a log of important local events as an on-going historical record.
Local History Recorders can be found in villages and towns throughout Suffolk including Bacton and also Wyverstone. Often they relate to one of the county’s over thirty Local History Societies such as the Bacton & Cotton Local History Society. These Societies are affiliated to the Suffolk Local History Council. This Council has an excellent Local Recorders Scheme which provides help and guidance for Recorders including an advisory pack for new Recorders and it also organises occasional meetings for Recorders to share experience.
This is an interesting and fulfilling challenge. Are you the person to be Cotton’s Local History Recorder? If so please contact:- Colin Hall, Clerk to Cotton Parish Council, Telephone: 01449 781400 Email: [email protected]
Bacton Village Hall Committee

Bacton Parish Council The parish council met on 21st November 2011. County Councillor Stringer explained that the white lines on Haughley Road had not been reinstated as an experiment by SCC and average car speeds have dropped by 5%. The results of this are to be evaluated next summer. Following the consultation on the mobile library service the frequency will change from a two weekly to a four weekly service and stops which fall within the boundary of a town or parish with a static library will be removed. District Councillor Stringer reported that MSDC is looking to gain views from the whole community on services and where savings can be made as part of next year’s budget process. The integration of management staff with Babergh District Council is due to be completed by the end of November. She also reported that BT’s upgrade to local exchanges for improved broadband is not due to be completed until autumn 2012 and the council are lobbying for this to be brought forward. The police reported that since the last meeting there had been one incident of vandalism involving a car. PCSO Johnson also reported that the non- emergency telephone number 101 is now in operation, but in the case of an emergency 999 should still be used. Cllr Jeffries reported that a beacon in Bacton had been registered as part of the celebrations of the Queens Diamond Jubilee. He outlined various ideas and possible events which could take place over the jubilee week-end and plans will be confirmed in the New Year. The planning applications for solar panels at Cromwell House, Rectory Road and a single storey extension at Kerrys Farm House, Kerrys Farm Lane had both been granted. The next parish council meeting will be held on 16th January 2012.
Wyverstone Parish Council
The next meeting of Wyverstone Parish Council will be on Tuesday 3rd January at 7pm in Wyverstone Village Hall.

Cotton Parish Council Cotton Parish Council met 3 times within a three week period. At the scheduled meeting held on the 23rd November Councillor Wenban reported that £700.00 had been pledged to the Diamond Jubilee Committee for next year’s celebrations. The Committee would shortly be submitting an official request for funding to the Parish Council. There are now sufficient volunteers in the village to proceed with the “Speedwatch” initiative, the Clerk will liaise with MSDC Councillor Stringer. The Clerk reported that he had not been able to unearth much information about land held by the Lord of the Manor but had passed the information on to Dr. Rubio in the U.S.A. SCC/MSDC Councillor Stringer reported that Suffolk County Council is pursuing a partnership with the Museum of East Anglian Life to raise the profile of “Heritage” in Suffolk. It has been agreed to reduce the Mobile Library service from 2 weekly to 4 weekly and withdraw stops from places with access to static libraries. Mid Suffolk District Council is looking to gain views from a wide range of the community to ask which services people value most and those which could be scaled back. BT’s upgrade to local exchanges is due to be completed by autumn 2012 but MSDC are lobbying to have this brought forward to Spring 2012. PCSO Johnson said that there had been 4 reported crimes in the village since the last report only one involving theft of property. Mr. Peter Wenban suggested that the village should have a Village Archivist, it was agreed to make a request for a volunteer via the Parish Magazine & the village Quarterly Newsletter. Copies of the updated Parish plan were distributed to Councillors to enable them to make comments at the next meeting Two meetings were held to discuss the retrospective planning application for retention of dwelling as constructed, Walnut Cottage, Blacksmith Road. The application was opposed as there is not sufficient space for vehicles to enter & exit the property, which is situated very close to a blind bend, in forward gear. The amended plan was also opposed as there is still not sufficient provision for vehicles to turn within the site. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday 18th January 2012 at 7.30pm in the village hall.

Catch a Match at Brickwall – Support Local Grass Roots Football
Why pay through the nose to watch your football, when you could get along to Brickwall Meadow to watch your local team in action. Bacton United have five adult teams competing each weekend during the football season. First
Team in the Suffolk & Ipswich Division Two, Reserve Team in the SIL Division Three, A Team in the SIL Division Six, Under 18’s in the Suffolk Youth League and the Ladies in the Suffolk League playing their matches on Sundays. Enjoy watching local players giving their all, and providing great entertainment when they pull on those Red & Green shirts.
You can enjoy hospitality and refreshment in the comfortable clubhouse and also benefit from the very reasonable bar prices. Saturday Mornings is when the club’s eight junior teams play their football at Brickwall Meadow, also at Rectory Road Playing Field, and Cotton Village Hall. In Case of Emergency (ICE). The Emergency Services have been out recently to a number of accidents involving people on their own e.g. a horse, bike or cycle rider, where it has been difficult to contact a family member. This is a timely reminder that these Services may not know who to contact in an emergency. All they ask is that you have an entry under ICE on your mobile phone with an emergency contact name & number against it, or carry a card with your details and emergency contact details. Roy Barker

Bacton & Cotton Local History Society
Tuesday, 17th January, 7.30 pm, Bacton Village Hall The Master Mason of our great buildings The life of John Wastell, master mason, who set out the Bury St. Edmunds cathedral plans and who worked on many major local projects is described by Tony Redman. He also tells us of the technical terms of medieval builders many of which have passed into common language. Members £ 2 Non-Members £ 3 The local artist who painted Bacton church by moonlight. On 15th November some 50 people were welcomed by the Local History Society for a talk on noted local artist John Bonny. Many of his paintings are owned by local residents, some of whom brought their pictures to the meeting. Bonny was born and lived in London where he painted pictures of Tottenham and other places but later moved to this area. He was a prolific worker using whatever materials came to hand. Much discussion took place among those who owned his pictures and those who knew him. 'Living history' as one visitor described the evening.
This being the last meeting of this popular Society before the New
Year tea, coffee and mince pies were served to everyone as has
become the Society's custom, and a 'Happy Christmas' wished to all
by the Chairman on behalf of the Committee.

2011 was a particularly successful year for Bacton Community Middle School with OFSTED inspectors judging the school to be “good and improving strongly”, in June and improved English and Maths results in the KS2 SATs. Alongside our focus on academic work and standards; there was also two wonderful school productions - Aladdina and The Witches, good sporting results particularly with basketball, more children than ever playing musical instruments, fabulous art exhibited as part of Stowfest and many more opportunities for our young people to enjoy, experience and excel.
We have made a New Year’s resolution and that is to keep you better informed about life at BCMS. Do watch out for February’s Parish News as it will contain much more about the school!

Bacton & District W.I.
had a very successful Christmas meeting on Dec 5th.
We began with wine and nibbles and, during the
course of the evening, enjoyed games and
competitions devised by committee member Angela
Cook. Our thanks go to Angela for organising the evening and to Kay
Brooks for helping with the food. I myself demonstrated how to
make a decorative Christmas tree arrayed with sweets and this was
followed by wine, canapés, sandwiches and mince pies and a
Christmas Quiz. We were treated to a comic monologue by one of
our long standing members, Kay Brooks, who is moving house to
another part of the country in the New Year and will be sadly
missed. On the bright side, two new members joined and we hope
they enjoy our W.I. for a long time to come. We ended with a
vigorous performance of ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’, aided by
picture prompt cards, and some traditional carols and Christmas
songs.
Our next meeting, the first of 2012, will be on February the 6th
when our talk has the intriguing title of ‘Banking to Borstal’.
Amanda Manley - President of Bacton & District W.I.
W.I. Soup ‘n’ Puds - On Friday November the 18th Bacton and
District W.I. hosted another successful soup and puds lunch in the
village hall. This was well supported by members and friends who
enjoyed good company, a quiz, and a variety of soups followed by an
excellent selection of desserts. A Bring and Buy plus a Raffle
completed the lunch which raised £359 for W.I. funds. Many thanks
to all who contributed, either by making soup or puddings or
donating draw prizes, and to the team who helped on the day.

Arrivals, departures & everything in between… This is a new feature - we’re hoping lots of people will send in
contributions. New baby in the family? Significant birthday, or
anniversary? A memorable achievement by one of our young
people? An honour received? Somebody retiring from a community
post, or moving away from one of the villages? News of former
residents? Obituaries of well loved village people? Send us your
announcement!
Happy birthday to Stowmarket Town Pastors, who celebrated their second anniversary with a party on Friday Dec. 16th before taking to the streets of Stowmarket as usual to be a friendly presence alongside the young people who hang out together in Stowmarket on a Friday night. Several of the Pastors and Prayer Team are residents in our villages, and so are quite a lot of the young people! We’re always looking for new prayer supporters and new Pastors – if you’re interested, please contact Monica Gant on 01449-781630.
We were very much saddened in November by the tragic loss of
Shaye Farr, Norma and Mike Lambert’s 24-year-old granddaughter,
killed in Sheffield by a hit-and-run driver while crossing the road.
Following so soon after Mike’s passing in April, this was a
devastating blow for her family. Shaye was a beautiful girl with so
much of life still ahead of her, and the number of her friends who
travelled down for her funeral was a moving tribute to the
importance she had for them. Our sympathy goes out to Norma, to
Shaye’s mother Tracey and all the family.

A word from the Rectory
Dear All
Welcome to 2012! I wonder what the year has in store for you? It’s a milestone year for Her Majesty the Queen, and it’s looking pretty special for me too. This month marks my 30th anniversary of starting full-time Church work: in January 1982 I joined the staff of what was then the British Council of Churches, and I’ve been as it were on the Lord’s payroll ever since. They have been thirty good years, and I hope the next thirty will be just as much fun. Later this month I’m off to explore Florida and the South Caribbean with my father and some American friends of his – yippee! Then in the autumn the Bishop has granted me three months’ study leave, and the year ends with my sixtieth birthday. Bring on the Senior Citizen’s Railcard, there’s a whole world out there to explore!
How are you feeling about this new year as we move into it? Do you see it as full of exciting possibilities, or does it look daunting and uncertain? For many people this is going to be a difficult time, with jobs going and financial troubles looming. The SNAP project at St. Mary’s Bacton is planning to launch a Work Club in the spring, to offer support and technical help to people who are looking for work, or who want to improve their prospects in the work they have. We can help with CVs, interview techniques, job applications, IT and other useful skills, as well as the support and encouragement members can give one another. If you’d like to find out more about this, maybe offer your services to help, do please get in touch with me. Or if you have any other suggestions about what SNAP might offer to the community, I’d love to hear them.
There are a lot of talented people in our three villages. If we pool our experience and skills, there’s a great deal we have to offer one another. Here’s hoping that 2012 will bring us plenty of good news stories, of caring and encouragement, of problems faced together, and of the kindness that is the heart of community.
Yours with love, Liz Varley

PEACE IN THE NEW YEAR The Church begins the New Year by praying for peace in the world, thinking back to the Christmas message of the angels to the shepherds when they announced the Birth of the Saviour in the city of Bethlehem, singing of the coming of peace on earth to people of good will. Jesus himself is our peace. He has come to reconcile us to God the
Father and bring forgiveness to all who believe in him, making peace
by his death on the Cross. His way of forgiveness and love opens the
door to true peace, a way for reconciliation between those in
conflict, individuals, peoples and nations.
If you’re reading this at the beginning of January, then the Twelve Days of Christmas are not over yet. The Church looks forward to celebrating the Epiphany of the Lord on 6th January. It’s an older feast than Christmas Day: in a way, all our celebrations of the Birth of Jesus are leading to this Feast of Jesus Christ being made known and shown forth as God’s Beloved Son. He is made manifest to the nations in the persons of the Magi, the Wise Men from the East, who were led by the star to visit the Infant Christ, bringing their mystic gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. At his Baptism in the River Jordan by John the Baptist, Jesus is made known as God’s Beloved Son and in his first miracle, changing water into wine at the Marriage Feast at Cana in Galilee, he is revealed as the Bridegroom of the Church. All are invited to the Wedding Feast of Jesus the Lamb of God and his faithful people.
As the Catholic Church in this country currently transfers the celebration of the Epiphany to the nearest Sunday, in the Parish of Our Lady, Stowmarket, we will celebrate the Epiphany on Sunday 8th January 2012 with Masses at the usual times.
May the Star of Bethlehem guide you throughout this year and may the Lord bless you and keep you, uncover his face to you and bring you peace.
Father David Finegan.
