Third Sunday in Ordinary time
All three readings this Sunday involve a prophetic interruption of business as usual and a call to change one’s ways in light of a new situation. The story of Jonah presents a Hebrew prophet who refuses to carry God’s message to those hated pagans, the Ninevites. The Lord God interrupts his flight from duty with the intervention of the big fish. When, reluctantly, Jonah goes forward with the bad news of doom for the Ninevites, all of them—humans and animals! - repent with sack cloth, ashes, and fasting. This results in the good news of God’s mercy. In a contrasting story, Mark tells of Jesus prophetically confronting his fellow Galileans with the good news: “This is the time of fulfillment. The Kingdom of God is at hand,” and following it with a challenge: “Repent, and believe in the gospel.” If gospel means “good news,” how is the announcement that the kingdom of God is at hand news? Isn’t God’s royal sovereignty always present sustaining everything? Yes! But Jesus is saying something else. He is drawing on the language of Jewish apocalyptic writing, which presumes that Israel is suffering human tyranny and looks forward to God intervening in business-as-usual, showing his kingship through the Messiah, who will restore Israel and bring about justice through the power of God’s Holy Spirit. That really is news, and calls for a change of heart and a new way of seeing: “Repent, and believe in the gospel!” The reminder of this shows what repentance entails by telling the story of the four “first responders.” Jesus interrupts not only their workday (nets) but all their relationships (father, boat, fellow workers).
Mardi Gras will be here before you know it!
We will again have our annual party on
Tuesday, February 13 so mark your calendars
and plan to join us for hot dogs, paczkis,
dancing and games for the kids from 6-8pm!
No Faith Formation classes this day!
A Weather Policy Reminder!
When Clarkston Community Schools are
closed due to inclement weather and poor
road conditions, Faith Formation Classes
are also canceled!
Parking Lot Safety
Now that Faith Formation classes have
started again, please be mindful of the traffic
cones, signs, and painted crosswalks in our
parking lot that keep our children safe.
During class session times, please enter by the far north
driveway, then drop children off on the sidewalk side of the
Cushing Center before you cautiously drive on. You should
never attempt to drive past or between the bright orange
safety cones. Remember too, a painted crosswalk is a ‘safety
area’ requiring motorists to stop if there is anyone in the
crosswalk. Thank you for exercising caution in these areas!
Catholic Heart Youth Camp
Registration is now open for our 2018 summer mission trip
with Catholic Heart Work Camp (CHWC)! We will be

variety of service projects (painting, cleaning, landscaping,
food banks, and more), and also participating in an awesome
week of worship and fellowship with other high school youth
from across the country. Any youth who are currently in the
8th grade or older are eligible to participate, but spots are
limited, so please sign up soon!
Total cost for the trip is planned to be $540, which is a great
discount thanks to generous donations from the Men of
St. Daniels, our Knights of Columbus chapter and
Faith Formation News
others. You can reserve your spot by sending or dropping off
a check for $90 (made out to St. Daniel Parish) to the Faith
Formation Office before January 20, 2018.

January is National Slavery and
Human Trafficking Prevention Month
Some Sobering Statistics from www.polarisproject.org. Although slavery is commonly thought to be a thing of the past, human traffickers generate hundreds of billions of dollars in profits by trapping millions of people in horrific situations around the world, including here in the U.S. Traffickers use violence, threats, deception, debt bondage, and other manipulative tactics to force people to engage in commercial sex or to provide labor or services against their will. While more research is needed on the scope of human trafficking, below are a few key statistics: The International Labor Organization estimates that there are 20.9 million victims of human trafficking globally.
68% of them are trapped in forced labor. 26% of them are children. 55% are women and girls.
The International Labor Organization estimates that forced labor and human trafficking is a $150 billion industry worldwide. The U.S. Department of Labor has identified 139 goods from 75 countries made by forced and child labor. In 2016, an estimated 1 out of 6 endangered runaways reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children were likely child sex trafficking victims.
Of those, 86% were in the care of social services or foster care when they ran.
There is no official estimate of the total number of human trafficking victims in the U.S. Polaris estimates that the total number of victims nationally reaches into the hundreds of thousands when estimates of both adults and minors and sex trafficking and labor trafficking are aggregated.
More than 31,600 total cases of human trafficking have been reported to the National Human Trafficking Hotline in the last eight years (and that’s only what is reported … the actual numbers are much, much higher). The Hotline annually receives multiple reports of human trafficking cases in each of the 50 states and D.C. Sadly, the number of human trafficking cases that Polaris learns about in the U.S. increases every year. Human trafficking is modern-day slavery. It contravenes basic human dignity. The elimination of human trafficking and
serving and empowering trafficking survivors is a priority issue for the Catholic Church. You may be asking yourself, “But what can I do about it?” First and foremost is just to educate yourself and others on human trafficking. Some good resources are: http://www.usccb.org/about/anti-trafficking-program/index.cfm, https://www.dhs.gov/slide/hp-2018-human-trafficking-awareness-month, https://humantraffickinghotline.org/ and https://polarisproject.org/human-trafficking.

Medical Mission Trip Needs Donations For the 23rd year, parishioner Maureen Tippen is once again going to a small village in the Dominican Republic February 23 through
March 3 on a medical mission to provide health care services to the local residents. The medical mission team provides health care and teaching, as quality medical care is scarce and inaccessible, especially for undocumented Haitians. During her stay there, Maureen will be working with a team of medical professionals providing health care to people who will come seeking relief for all types of medical concerns.
The team will be supplying all medical equipment and supplies. They are in need of items such as: antibiotics; antifungal creams; multivitamins, Tylenol, Motrin, Aleve, and cold/allergy remedies for children and adults; canes for the elderly; Pedialyte; tooth brushes and paste; Matchbox cars; hair bows/ties; large plastic Ziploc bags; and wash cloths. Maureen is also attempting to bring baseball equipment (old or new) to a small sugar cane village (batay) for a team of boys wanting to start a baseball team.
YOU WILL FIND A BOX IN THE CUSHING CENTER FOR YOUR DONATIONS TO THE MEDICAL MISSION. PLEASE DROP OFF ITEMS ON OR BEFORE SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 4. If you have any questions, please contact Maureen at 248-620-8752 or [email protected]. Please keep the group in your prayers. Thanks!
In today’s First Reading, God moves Jonah to listen to His
call to admonish the people of Nineveh to turn from their evil
ways and repent, which they do.
In St. Mark’s Gospel, Jesus invites Simon-Peter, Andrew,
James, and John to follow Him. They
respond without hesitation, abandoning
their fishing businesses and families —
basically, sacrificing everything — to
become Jesus’ disciples. Their actions
were considered as radical in our Lord’s
day as they would be in today’s secular
culture. As disciples striving to find a personal relationship
with Christ, we, too, must be willing to open our hearts to
the Lord. He alone can give us true peace, joy, and an
abundance of grace.
In a spirit of evangelization, we must spread His Word to all
those we meet. This is our call as joyful missionary disciples.
An organization that embraces missionary discipleship is
St. Paul Street Evangelization.
