Mission Hospital Spiritual Care Volunteer Training

Mission Hospital is offering a training program for Spiritual Care Volunteers for both the Mission Viejo and Laguna Beach Campuses to begin Wednesday, September 13, 2017. The training consists of 10 classes in which you will develop skills for visiting patients. Applicants must be adults of generosity and compassion, plus understand spirituality as a necessary element of patient care. Spiritual Care Volunteers will be asked to devote a minimum of 100 hours annually to patient visits. “Visit the Sick”

As a baptized Christian, visiting the sick is one of our corporal works of mercy. A number of people in our parish are already Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to the Sick and Homebound and are visiting the many people of our parish who are not able to attend mass each week. They bring Holy Communion and spend some time in prayer with them. Yet, we need more people to fulfill this ministry demand. If you have a desire to be of service to those who are homebound, please contact Eileen at 949-234-1354 or esmith@missionparish.org. Qualifications of an EMHC to the sick and homebound are: (a) practicing Catholic, (b) have completed all Sacraments of Initiation, (c) safe environment trained. If you have a group that would be interested in having a tour of the inside of the Basilica, Hospitality Minister, Larry Larson can take your group on a 30-40 minute walk around the inside of the Church and provide information on the history of the Basilica, the Altar, the Grand Retablo, the Shrine sites, pictures, artifacts and statues. Artists’ Retreat Day at Mission Basilica

Gather with artists (professional and amateur) from our community to reflect on our call to be “custodians of beauty.” The retreat will include continental breakfast, prayer, and a brief introduction to Pope Benedict’s message to artists. At 9 AM, you are invited to work en plein air on the Old Mission grounds or anywhere in the vicinity. We will gather again at 12 noon for a simple lunch and to display and share what we have accomplished during the morning. We will adjourn by 1 PM. INFANT BAPTISMAL MINISTRY

Is hospitality your gift? Do you like to help people feel comfortable and welcomed? Then the infant baptismal ministry is a perfect opportunity to exercise your gift in our community of young parents. Join our baptismal team of 3-4 people assisting our deacon and priests with the baptism of infants. Two teams alternate every other month on third Sunday (you would be helping only 5 times a year) from 2:15 to 4:00 PM in the basilica. Some of the tasks include greeting the parents, godparents, family and friends, assisting them as they find their place in the pews, filling the font with water, lighting candles, setting out the oils, distributing baptismal candles, certificates, garments, making announcements, proclaiming the reading, preparing the area by the baptismal font, assisting the deacon during the baptismal rite……. PREGUNTA DE REFLEXION DE LA SEMANA

MENSAJE DE LA SEMANA: El Señor ha vuelto a reunir a su COMUNIDAD: Él está en medio de sus hermanos instruyéndoles con su Palabra y fortaleciéndoles con su Eucaristía. Como a los mismos Apóstoles, HOY, a nosotros, nos va forjando con el Espíritu de su Evangelio y nos vuelve a alimentar con su Pan de Vida. Resulta que el CAMINO de la FIDELIDAD no fue fácil en otros tiempos, y tampoco lo es en nuestros días. Seguir anunciando una Buena Noticia no es nada fácil: que Dios se haga presente en un campesino de un pueblacho; que Dios ha resucitado a un condenado a muerte; y que la vida entera de sus seguidores queda MARCADA por su Evangelio; que todo esto es BUENA NOTICIA. Definitivamente, esto no es fácil. En otros tiempos y hoy vuelven a resonar las mismas palabras de Jesús: “No tengáis miedo a los hombres. Si uno se pone de mi parte ante los hombres, también me pondré de su parte ante mi Padre del cielo”. Es necesario escucharlas porque estamos tentados de cansancio y, por eso mismo, de la tendencia a callarnos, a silenciar; esto es, a no dar testimonio. Volvamos a escuchar sus palabras y ellas reforzarán nuestros corazones.

UNIDOS POR UNA MISION

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

En 1769 los misioneros franciscanos establecieron la primera misión en lo que hoy es la ciudad de San Diego, California. Bajo la dirección de fray Junípero Serra, los hermanos menores pudieron establecer otras ocho misiones, incluyendo la ciudad de San Francisco, en 1776. Junípero o José Miguel Serra, fue hijo de padres campesinos de la Isla de Mallorca, España. Ingresó a la Orden de los hermanos menores (franciscanos) a los dieciséis años y con el tiempo, llegó a ser profesor de filosofía, pero su verdadero deseo era ser misionero en el continente americano, lo que hoy conocemos como Hemisferio Occidental. En 1749, su orden religiosa lo envió a México como administrador del Colegio Apostólico. Poco a poco se fue desprendiendo de sus cargos académicos para establecer misiones entre los indígenas. Aunque algunos afirman lo contrario, Junípero fue arduo defensor de los nativos. En California, más de una vez tuvo problemas con los soldados españoles, debido a que éstos abusaban de los amerindios, problemas que lo llevaron a defender los derechos humanos de los nativos ante el Virrey en México. Sus esfuerzos por cristianizar los indígenas de California tuvieron como resultado más de 6000 bautizos durante sus quince años en esa región.

“Visitar a los Enfermos”

Como Cristianos bautizados, el visitar a los enfermos es una de las obras corporales de misericordia. Varias personas de nuestra parroquia que ya son Ministros Extraordinarios de la Eucaristía para los Enfermos de nuestra comunidad que no pueden asistir a misa cada semana. Ellos llevan la Santa Comunión y pasan un tiempo en oración con ellos. Sin embargo necesitamos mas personas para poder cumplir con la demanda de este ministerio.
