November

Special Mission is:

The World Hunger Appeal helps people help themselves

through long-term development. It provides relief and disaster response.

The World Hunger Appeal translates faith into food and strength. Hunger Appeal funds not only fill empty stomachs, but also they make it possible to people to plant and raise food for themselves and others. The funds also make possible self-help development, literacy, health care, housing and care for the environment.

The Pies

the Limit:

Youth Of

Urland Pie

Auction. Sunday, Nov. 21st

This auction is just before Thanksgiving (what great timing, don’t you think?). We are asking anyone who is willing, to bring

in a pie (or pies) for us to put out on Sunday morning in a silent auction. All bakers and bidders go home with some wonderful goodies and/or the knowledge that they helped our youth ministry.

Ukraine Christmas

Shipment on its way

Three boxes of winter clothing, children’s toys and supplies were shipped off in mid October. The

boxes should arrive in the Ukraine right before Christmas.

Thank you to all who contributed

items for this shipment. The church children will be so delighted with

what they receive.

Challenges for Christians come from all sides Luke 18:9-14 Jesus also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded

others with contempt.

One of the toughest parts of the game of golf is putting. There is a saying in golf that goes something like this, “You drive for show, and you putt for dough”. The golfer starts each hole with what is called a “drive”. When golfers hit their drive the golf ball goes farther than on any other hit, at least that's what is suppose to happen. When you hit a drive down the fairway you look really good. With one swing a golfer can hit 200, 300 yards or more. When golfers are putting sometimes it takes them 3 or 4 hits to travel 10 yards. In putting you have to make the ball go in a particular place. Part of the difficulty in putting comes from an uneven ground. You could be putting up hill or down hill and the length of the grass can make the ball go faster or slower, longer or shorter. The really good golf courses have their greens cut really short with the hole in a place that is very difficult to get to. It cannot only be difficult to put the ball in the hole but sometimes it is difficult to keep the ball from rolling off the green. Living a Christian life can be like putting. Sometimes it is difficult

to figure out exactly what you should do. Sometimes it is not only

hard to do the right thing but it can also be easy to get off track

while trying to do the right thing.

As baptized Christians we live in the promises of Christ. In response to Jesus' love and forgiveness we try to live the life Jesus would want us to live. This involves not only religious practices like weekly worship, prayer, reading and studying scripture, receiving the sacraments, tithing but also treating other people as we want to be treated. This is difficult in itself. In this parable Jesus talks about another challenge. As we strive to live the way Jesus wants us to live it seems so easy to compare ourselves to others, to judge others. Maybe on your way to church on Sunday you see your neighbor working in the field, during worship the person you sit next to hardly puts anything in the offering plate and when they do it's only a dollar or maybe in a bible study one of the other people doesn’t understand what Jesus is really saying. It is so easy to see people who apparently aren't living up to Jesus' standards as you are and look down on them. Maybe you aren't perfect but you are certainly a better Christian than them. Christianity has been explained as “one beggar asking another beggar where to get bread”. We might not like to think of ourselves as beggars but we either deserve God's grace or we don't. If we deserve God's grace then we are beggars and it isn't grace. Grace is something you don't deserve. We are called to live as Christ wants us to live but when we judge others we throw it all away. Let us work for Christ, if our neighbor needs some help let us lend a non-judgmental hand, rejoicing and appreciating God's grace.

Mr. Smith was brought to a Catholic hospital and quickly taken in for emergency heart surgery.

The operation went well and, as the groggy man regained consciousness, he was reassured by a sweet nun, who was waiting by his bed.

"Mr. Smith, you're going to be just fine," said the nun, gently patting his hand. "We do need to know, however, how you intend to pay for your stay here. Are you covered by insurance?"

"No, I'm not," the man whispered hoarsely.

"Then can you pay in cash?" the nun asked.

"I'm afraid I cannot, Sister."

"Well, do you have any close relatives?" the nun questioned.

"Just my sister in New Mexico," he volun-teered. "But she's a humble spinster nun."

"Oh, I must correct you, Mr. Smith. Nuns are not spinsters. They are married to God!"

"Really?" said Mr. Smith. "In that case, please send the bill to my brother-in-law."

This is a weight loss program that was started last year by Pastor Dean and a few jumped on the bandwagon with him. It will be picked up again this fall. This is for those interested in loosing a few pounds and raising money for a good cause while doing it. Get people to

sponsor you for each pound lost. The money that is pledged will go ! to the Youth

and ! to ELCA World Hunger. ‘Weigh-ins’ will be the first Sunday of each month (starting in

November) following worship. (One person will be in charge of

weigh-ins and keep the personal chart of individuals, which will be

confidential except Pastor Dean’s)

Participants will choose a goal weight loss, which will be posted. Participants do not have to post their weights, just total pounds lost.

Sign up information on the Youth Board.
