GIFT AID - What is it?

Gift Aid was introduced in 2000 to replace the cumbersome Deeds of Covenants system. In essence the tax authorities (now HMRC) pay to churches and other recognised charities 25% of the donations received by the charities, so long as the tax on them does not exceed the total tax paid by the donor in that year. Therefore if the donor contributes £100 HMRC will pay £25 to the charity as long as the current rate of tax is 20%. Last year HMRC paid the parish £2775 for ongoing church expenses as well as £1127 for donations to the Appeals for modifications of our two churches.

Our donations fall into two categories - contributed Gift Aid and. non-contributed Gift Aid. The former applies to agreements to make regular donations on a weekly, monthly, quarterly or annual basis. The non-contributed is administered by the use of the white envelopes which you see in the pews at each church service. These are intended for (a) casual visitors (b) regular parishioners who prefer this flexible way of contributing (c) contracted Gift Aid donors who wish to supplement their contributions. Last year we received £728 in tax repayments on white envelope donations.

We are always seeking new contributors to Gift Aid especially to compensate for the loss of donors who have left the parish, In addition this would help to soften the blow now that HMRC have reduced the tax repayment from 28% to 25% due to the standard rate of income tax falling from 22% to 20%. If you would like to know more about Gift Aid please ring our Gift Aid Secretary Harry Weldon on (01296) 748878. He will be delighted to hear from you.

Aunt Em and the Jubilee Sandwich

The memsahib often says she could crown me for one reason or another. We were talking recently about royal events. Em remembers the street parties in 1977. Apparently her ex neighbours still talk about her vol aux vents.(I suspect her memory goes quite a lot further to be honest but don’t quote me). She suggested why not write about Coronation chicken.

I usually leave the victuals side of family life to my better half but a bit of research shows that there are loads of recipes for Coronation Chicken but basically it is cold chicken with a mayonnaise-based sauce which can be eaten as a salad or used to fill sandwiches. Depending on your pocket and your tastes you can flavour the mayonnaise with fresh herbs and spices and additional ingredients such as almonds, raisins, and crème fraîche.

It was invented by Constance Spry, a florist, and Rosemary Hume, a chef, are credited with the invention of coronation chicken. Preparing the food for the banquet of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, Spry proposed the recipe of cold chicken, curry cream sauce and dressing that would later become known as coronation chicken.

Coronation chicken may have been inspired by jubilee chicken, a dish prepared for the silver jubilee of George V in 1935, which mixed chicken with mayonnaise and curry. Additionally, for the Queen's Golden Jubilee in 2002, another celebratory dish was devised, also called Jubilee chicken.

Ingredients

Serves: 9

100g (4 oz) mayonnaise

75g (3 oz) mango chutney

1 teaspoon curry powder

1 dessertspoon lime zest

4 tablespoons fresh lime juice

1/2 teaspoon salt

500g (1 1/4 lb) skinless, boneless chicken breast fillets - cooked and diced

Preparation method Prep: 15 mins 1. In a large bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, chutney; curry powder, lime zest, lime juice and salt. Add chicken and toss with the dressing until well coated. Cover and refrigerate until serving. Tip: Use half mayonnaise, half crème fraîche for a lower fat version of this recipe or cut out the fresh lime juice and add mango chutney for a simpler cheaper version. Max

Philip Jackson Fletcher 1933 - 2012

Phil Fletcher, who died from cancer on Thursday March 15th after a short illness, will be greatly missed by his many friends in the village. Phil was born in Yorkshire and brought up in Nuneaton but spent his schooldays boarding in the Lake District. His happy schooldays influenced the rest of his life – he loved to walk in the countryside and returned regularly to the Lakes with friends for bibulous walking holidays. He travelled worldwide and returned from his expeditions with superb photographs – last year he won the Local History Group competition with his picture of cheeky penguins. He enjoyed golf and his immaculate garden, helping with the family horses, constant “do-it-yourself” activities and socialising with his many friends. Phil was a civil engineer and came to Aylesbury in 1967 to lead the Bucks County Council team responsible for major improvements to our road network. He lived with his wife, Gill, and two daughters Caroline and Joanna on the Bugle Horn Estate and was a vital part of the local social scene – a lovely friend and we all regret his loss. Our love and sympathy go to his family.

Super Spring Sale and the Flush Fund

‘..and the rain, it raineth every day…’

And it certainly did on April 30th. On what had become a typical April day for this year people gathered in a warm and welcoming Village Hall to support the Dinton Flush Fund. Thank you to all who braved the cold and dismal weather to provide, buy and sell bricabrac, toys, books and produce – all sustained by some excellent refreshments. An amazing £630 was raised for the Fund! A long day but well worth it.

Events, donations from individuals and Dinton Fete, and small grants have now raised about £83000, even more after this weekend! The second stage, the moving of the Serjeant monument, can be carried out as soon as the Architect completes accurate plans. The plans are required by the Diocese to grant the Faculty for the work to proceed. If these plans are received soon stage 2 could be completed this year….. Thank you for all the support you have given.

A FEW THOUGHTS OF DAYS LONG PAST I lived in a small village where everyone had a garden, and in those days it was

Dig for Victory and of course this was growing vegetables. There were not many different varieties available unlike now when there are scores of choices and new ones every year. Seeds were also sold very differently than to-day. No shiny packets with only a few seeds in, peas and beans were measured out in either pints or half pints, and small seeds were sold by the ounce and generally in Ironmongers and similar types of shops, no Garden Centres. All digging was done by hand, and very often double dug i.e. that’s two

spits deep, lots of farm yard manure was used although I seem to remember ‘National Growmore’ coming into use. Lots of potatoes were grown in those days, a staple diet and quite easy to store in straw and soil covered heaps, carrots were stored in boxes of sand and runner beans in brine. We did have the use of one insecticide D.D.T., this did kill most pests but of course in time it proved to be a very dangerous substance. PS

The old pavilion in Stone War Memorial Recreation Ground

Many of you will have noticed that the old sports pavilion in the Recreation Ground has been removed. It was beyond repair, dangerous and vandalised and the Parish Council is planning to replace it with a vandal-proof new building. Funding for this is nearly in place. The old building will end its life on the Village Jubilee Beacon on June 4

th.

The pavilion was opened by Lady Smyth on May 23

rd 1927. The original estimate

for the building, constructed by Plested Brothers, whose works were at the bottom of Eythrope Road, was £110, money raised by fundraising and subscription. Over 85 years the pavilion has been the centre of village activity – football, cricket, tennis, bowls, sports, fetes, bonfires and celebrations have taken place around it. A memorial to one war, bombs fell near to it in another. We asked the children of Stone School’s Year 4 to write for us their feelings about the pavilion and we received work of a very high standard, full of emotion and imagery. This will be on display at the C20th Stone exhibition in early October, but we have extracted some of the best and most descriptive words and phrases here from all the children’s work to illustrate the history of this little building as these 8 year olds see it. – thank you Year 4 The Old Pavilion – by Year 4 In 1927 I was built and I was spotless... in that time it was brand new, and was used and looked after. It has had a brilliant life… like a mother to everyone. By the pavilion there are poppies to remember people in the war for evermore For 80 memorable and remarkable years, each one as gleeful as the first, the pavilion stood and watched time roaring by. It used to be a wonderful place Like a proud mother it has watched over many events….the sound of people cheering at football matches…the crackling of fires, crowds, carnivals fetes jubilees and fireworks… glowing sparklers…the windows are like a radiant watchman staring at the events.

The 2002 Golden Jubilee celebrations

The Wagon and Horses football team, early 1990s

When it snows it feels like it is in heaven. It has experienced some fantastic memories…listening to trees as if they were whispering to each other. There were bombs going bong and boom…many events during the war. This crooked abandoned pavilion now stands forsaken in a corner, battered and bruised but what an amazing life it has led. Now the damaged and broken pavilion starts to fall apart day by day. It is now old and rotten, neglected and lonely. The messy pavilion’s window eyes are bursting into tears…. the windows are shuttered and the wood is rotting away... it is filthy, smelly as a bin, destroyed

and broken... hazardous razor-sharp nails are poking out of my deserted body…. at night time it looks haunted and disgusting Strangely through broken ears it could hear football crowds, giggling children and the footsteps of powerful runners The mysterious pavilion will be ripped apart…the dejected and heartbroken, betrayed and battered pavilion has to die. Vandalised and cold it waits to be dismantled. This wreck of a building can hardly fight to live another day…this important building will no longer stand. So lets all give a farewell goodbye to this fantastic pavilion… lets give it a fantastic goodbye! This shattered building will be remembered by the people of Stone.

June 2012 Dear Friends,

DIAMOND JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS

By the time you read this, no doubt our Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations will be in full swing. After the austerity of recent years, which seem set to continue for some time yet, it is great to have something to celebrate together. I hope many of you will find time to join us at Stone Church on SUNDAY 3

RD

JUNE, 10.00am for a special SERVICE OF THANKSGIVING for our Queen. She has given us a wonderful example of selfless Christian service over the last 60 years. The idea of Jubilee Celebrations has its roots back in Old Testament times, when every 50 years the Israelites commemorated their deliverance from slavery in Egypt with a year of Thanksgiving and Celebration, inaugurated by the blowing of a ram’s horn (trumpet). It was a time to renew their faith in God for providing their food and daily needs, and also a time of release from all debt. Originally in Israel, no-one was able to purchase land from the tribal families, so as to keep it in small household units. The aim was to distribute the land as widely as possible. Instead, a kind of ‘leasehold agreement’ operated, and the price fixed depended upon how many years remained until the next Jubilee, when the land would revert to its original owner. During the Jubilee year itself, all debts would be remitted, and any Hebrews who had been enslaved to pay for debts, were released. With our present world banking crisis, brought about – to a large extent – by over inflated and unaffordable property prices, perhaps we could learn something from the Jewish system. There are many who could do with a year of Jubilee and release from debt! Unfortunately, even in Israel, greed eventually took over and the equivalent of our Property Developers and banks moved in and exploited the poor. They were vehemently condemned by some of the Old Testament prophets such as Amos, who said: “You trample on the poor… you afflict the righteous and take a bribe, you push aside the needy in the gate, so the Lord says: ‘I despise your festivals, even though you offer me your burnt offerings and grain offerings. I will not accept them. But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.’ “ (From Amos Chapter 5)

GRACE AND FAVOUR AUCTION

At 8pm Saturday October 20th there will be an auction in the Village Hall to raise money for the Flush Fund. There will a licensed bar with snacks for sale. Dear Supporters, this missive is aimed at you. It would be wonderful if you could donate a spare Ming vase or Vermeer to be auctioned. Failing that, services and favours are to be auctioned as well. Do you have a highly sought after skill - either as a professional or good amateur? For example – if you were a solicitor you could donate the writing of a will in a villager’s home? Perhaps you have the IT skills to remedy someone’s problematic home computer, or perhaps you are a great chef and could take a masterclass of 6 useless cooks? Could you (with your friends) donate the cooking of a small dinner party in the hosts own home or offer to bake cakes for a party. Have you got something, tangible or intangible, which other people would really like?? Could you donate a weekend at your holiday cottage? Perhaps you know someone famous and could get the gift of a personal item for auctioning. We already have Lot 1 - a large gas fired barbecue grill for a home garden BBQ party and Lot 2 -.the offer of some garden design advice and an afternoon of gardening This is going to be a great fun evening but a wide variety of lots is needed for the auction and your offers would be very much appreciated. We intend to circulate a catalogue of all the lots and bids will be accepted prior to the event so even if you cannot come along you can still purchase. The Prayer of St Richard of Chichester

St Richard, who was Bishop of Chichester for eight years in the mid-

13th century, was well acquainted with both hard work and

suffering. His prayer is a simple request to be closer to Jesus who

has done so much for us.

Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ,

for all the benefits which you have given us,

for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us.

Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother,

may we know you more clearly,

love you more dearly,

and follow you more nearly,

day by day.

Amen.

June Gardening It should be roses all the way this month, regular deadheading should help the growth of new flowering shoots and flowers later in the year. Do keep an eye open for green fly on the flower buds and if there are too many for finger and thumb removal the cans of readymade spray will do the trick, and an application of a suitable fertiliser will also encourage new strong shoots. Cut vigorous rock garden plants like aubrietia, alyssum and arabis with shears once the flowers are over. House plants and all containers outside, need regular watering and will benefit from feeding once every couple of weeks or so. If you are going to be away for a few days or more, remove treasured indoor plants from sunny windows where they would be in strong direct sunlight. As the month progresses ‘June drop’ takes place, this is when nature takes over and thins out over laden fruit trees, especially apples. Unfortunately it doesn’t always complete the process so one needs to make sure trees are not going to have crops which are too heavy. There should be plenty of young vegetables and there is still time to sow more. I find it well worth while sowing some runner bean seeds mid June which crop well into the autumn.
