From the Rector’s Desk

Dear Parishioners and Friends,

Castle Kidz Last month I began with some changes which had taken place or were about to happen. During the past week we had the last Board meeting of the original group that was there to set up Castle Kidz. Hard to imagine that in September it will be the start of the fourth school year since its inception. In keeping with the constitution we need to find new Board members to replace those who have completed their term of office. A sincere thank you to Ruth, Deirdre and Christine for their loyal and valued input. We are deeply indebted to them for their work from beginning to this healthy stage of Castle Kidz. Thank you to Ruth for her work as Team Leader at the most difficult stage of setting up the pre-school. She is now resigning her role and moving on to new things. We wish her well with her future studies, but I am happy to report that she will be remaining in her role with the After School. We welcome Tracey Beausang, who has been with us for the past year, and now takes over the reins of leadership. We send Tracey our very best wishes and hope she finds real job satisfaction as she displays her very obvious gifts and talents with Castle Kidz. Help Help is always appreciated and I have availed of the generously given help of various people. Caroline Tindal, Rev Niall Stratford, Rev Canons John Clarke and John McCullagh have all stepped up to the mark when needed. For this please accept my sincere thanks. We are deeply indebted to Janet Armstrong for her very willing help as organist in Newcastle and St Matthew’s during Sheila’s absence. We very much appreciate Janet’s commitment in travelling from Ballinaclash Sunday by Sunday. Sheila is well on the mend and will soon be back with us, but we won’t be losing Janet’s talents as she will be taking up the reins as Director of the Junior Choir from September.

LUNCH AT MARLFIELD HOUSE

Best Wishes Best Wishes to Laura Langrell on her retirement from St Francis School as School Secretary. We hope she will be enjoying the ‘daily round’more than the ‘common task’ for many years to come. Sunday School We look forward to our Sunday School starting up again in September with our new team of teachers. There will be some training sessions for the teachers during the summer by Susie Evans. We’re very grateful to Susie for giving us her time and I know that these will be important times, both for the teachers and children in Sunday School. Please note that the services alternate between Newcastle and St Matthew’s during July and August and the time will be at 11.00 each Sunday. God Bless, William

There will be no lunch in July. Confirmation If you wish to be considered for confirmation in Spring 2018 please submit your name to Karen in the Parish Office. Confirmation classes will begin in the Autumn. Bereavement Janet Carvalhais, Kilcoole Jane passed away peacefully at home on 28th May in the loving care of her husband Antonio and their daughter Luisa. Her death followed a long period of illness. We extend our prayerful sympathy to Antonio and Luisa. Time Out The Time Out group will meet on Tuesdays 18th July and 15th August at 8pm in the Parish Centre. Parents and Toddlers Look out for messages from Kim re the Parents and Toddlers.

Table Tennis The Table Tennis club continues to meet on a Monday evening at 8pm in the Parish Centre. From the Treasurer I am pleased to report that giving to date this year from Freewill envelopes, Sustentation and loose collections has increased by 22% to €20,706, an increase of €3821 over the same period last year. If this continues for the rest of the year we should be back to the level of giving in 2011. This will make a significant difference to running the Parish. Thank you. Holidays

William will be off duty from Sunday 30th July to Sunday 13th August inclusive.. He will be back in harness on Monday 14th August. If you need help or advice during that time please contact Karen in the office at 01-2819300 or 087-2866889. Karen will be off work from 8th July, back in the office on Monday 24th July. Please get in touch before then if you need any help with administration during that time.

Janet Carvalhais

We were all deeply saddened to hear that Janet Carvalhais had passed

away, having bravely fought her battle with cancer over the past three

years. She died at home on Sunday 28th. May under the loving care

of her husband Antonio and her daughter Luisa. Her funeral service

took place in Newcastle Church on Tuesday 30th May and her

remains were interred in the graveyard there.

Janet was well known to many in the area as she ran the Playgroup in

the Community Centre over about 15 years. The children, now in

their twenties, will remember her with great fondness. She was a very

caring and gentle person and was loved by all. Together with Antonio

they ran the Portuguese stall at the Food Fairs when we were

fundraising to build the Community Centre. We extend our deepest

sympathy to Antonio and Luisa.

Fields of Life Newcastle

A note of thanks to Karen Kissane and her team and the children at Sunday School for their much needed contribution of €203.62 to Fields of Life.

Newcastle Parish has been funding the education of 9 children in Uganda since May 2003 and, although we don’t have 9 monthly contributors, we manage to pay €170.00 per month to Fields of Life. This would not be possible without help such as this, occasional donations and events such as a Coffee Morning here at home every couple of years as a booster.

The Students move on after leaving school, and another very poor (possibly AIDS orphaned) child takes their place. We get 2 letters a year from these kids – without Fields of Life they would not have had any education at all. It’s always great to hear from them. Their letters are always on display at the back of the Church. The schools are built in the remotest of places, where they are most needed.

Very sorry that Karen is leaving Sunday School – we hope that her replacement keeps Fields of Life in mind.

Please Support the Fields of Life

EAST AFRICA EMERGENCY APPEAL

Fields of Life urgently needs your support to help alleviate the suffering of South Sudanese refugees who have fled to Northern

Uganda. Our partners are already providing clean water and emergency relief supplies in the districts of Yumbe and Adjumani,

Northern Uganda.

Read below the horrific story of Simon's escape to safety...

“My name is Salah Iwi Hilary Simon, I am South Sudanese and a member of the Madi tribe living in Kerepi, Eastern Equatoria. Dinka attacked our village and tied me to a tree as they looted and burned

my house, they took my five goats and killed some of my neighbours. I was rescued by friends and fled into the bush to hide. I was separated

from my family so I walked for three days without food until I reached the Uganda border. The UNHCR transported me to

Pagirinya Camp where I was registered and given some sorghum, cooking oil, beans, a blanket, a mat and told to build my own shelter

with a plastic sheet. The rains have come and it’s cold, wet and miserable here but I’m now safe. With the rains comes malaria,

which is on the rise, also because the Rei river is close to the camp.”

Please pray for Simon and the hundreds of thousands of refugees
