Dear Friends, Perhaps you have heard of the phrase “smells and bells” to describe the Roman Catholic Liturgy. Our style of worship is one that is very sensate, meaning we that try involve all of our senses as we worship the God who has

given us these marvelous gifts to begin with! Incense, of course, is one of the “smells” we use. What we use here is fast burning and nearly smokeless in an effort to help those with allergies (like myself). The Feast of the Epiphany is one of those feasts where the use of incense is almost required as it has the honor of being one of the three gifts offered by the Three Kings to the King of all King! The smoke arises from the burner, or thurible, as a visible sign of our prayers rising up to the Lord. Visuals help us to give a more tangible feeling to that which is truly intangible. The Three Kings or the Wise men, offer an exotic air of mystery and wonder to this feast. Their names, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar, are not what one would call “common.” However, the first letters of their names will be inscribed over many doorways today as it has been for centuries. As they arrived at the stable to offer their gifts and blessings to the Christ Child, the tradition arose to bless, in their name, the homes of all those who desire the presence of that same child in their own homes. I offer you this prayer to use at home with your families, or by yourself, to bless your home as we begin the new year. Using a piece of chalk, write on the outside of your house or inside above the front main entrance, above or next to an entrance: +20 Christus Mansionem Benedicat 18+ These words mean, “May Christ bless this house” or you may use the names of the Magi, +20 Caspar Melchior

Balthazar 18+ or +20 C M B 18

All: Lord God of heaven and earth, you

revealed your only begotten Son to every nation

by the guidance of a star. Bless this house and all

who live here and all who visit. May we be

blessed with health, kindness of heart, gentleness

and the keeping of your law. Fill us with the

light of Christ, that our love for each other may

go out to all. We ask this through Christ our

Lord. Amen

May the peace of Christ always remain with you and yours. Peace, Fr. Michael

Father Carlos’ Pills of Faith

The Feast of the Epiphany is the celebration of the revelation of Jesus to all nations. The wise men coming from different parts of the world

come to recognize Jesus as the King and Savior. “Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” Gold that symbolizes Jesus’ kingship, frankincense offer to him as God, and myrrh that signifies his humanity. We also come to Jesus, we also give him homage and we present to him all who we are, all we have and all we keep in our hearts. And, in exchange, Jesus reveals himself to us, he gives us his love, peace, and mercy. He receives our prayers and grants all we truly need. Our lives become full of his humbleness and caring presence. So, let us come to Jesus, let us bow ourselves to him as the wise always do. “Wise men come with the treasures of earth in their hands, and left with the Treasure of heaven in their hearts.”
