All the Fish in the Sea
John’s Gospel on this Third Sunday of Easter tells us vividly, yet subtly, of the universality of the Church.
We may remember from our religious education that there are four distinguishing marks of the authenticity
of the Church: It is one; it is holy; it is catholic; it is apostolic. The word “catholic,”(with a lower case
“c”) is a synonym for “universal.”
In today’s narrative, there is the striking image of the fish being counted after the net is hauled to shore.
There are 153 fish. Over the centuries many scholars examined that number looking for interpretations or
hidden messages.
In the 4th century, the great Doctor and Father of the Church, Saint Jerome, claimed that at the time of Jesus,
people believed that there were a total of 153 species of fish in the sea. Jerome inferred that the net thrown
and filled by the apostles held every single kind of fish known to man. The apostles brought all the fish to
the shore, and Peter dragged them to the feet of Jesus. This accomplishment, led by the first Pope, was
done without the net being broken. The capacity of the net is limitless.
Three Sundays ago today, every Catholic Church in the whole world, in every hemisphere, every climate,
large and small, celebrated the Sacred Triduum. Jesus Christ rose from the dead to bring life to every person
in all times. Resurrected life comes through the Church, through the proclamation of the Word of God, and
through the Eucharistic presence of the risen Christ.
Peter, the first Pope, brought the net onto the land, just as God, with no exclusivity, gathers together all the
people from all the ends of the earth into His Catholic Church. The embrace of the Church is as universal
as the love of Jesus Christ.

El Evangelio de Juan en este tercer domingo de Pascua nos dice vívidamente, pero sutilmente, de la
universalidad de la Iglesia. Podemos recordar de nuestra educación religiosa que hay cuatro marcas
distintivas de la autenticidad de la Iglesia: Es una; es santa es católica es apostólica. La palabra "católico"
(con una minúscula "c") es un sinónimo de "universal".
En la narrativa de hoy, está la sorprendente imagen de los peces que se cuentan después de que la red se
lleva a la orilla. Hay 153 peces. A lo largo de los siglos, muchos eruditos examinaron ese número en busca
de interpretaciones o mensajes ocultos.
En el siglo IV, el gran Doctor y Padre de la Iglesia, San Jerónimo, afirmó que en la época de Jesús, la gente
creía que había un total de 153 especies de peces en el mar. Jerónimo dedujo que la red lanzada y llena por
los apóstoles contenía cada tipo de pez conocido por el hombre. Los apóstoles llevaron todos los peces a la
orilla y Pedro los arrastró a los pies de Jesús. Este logro, dirigido por el primer Papa, se realizó sin que se
rompiera la red. La capacidad de la red es ilimitada.
Hoy, hace tres domingos, cada Iglesia católica en todo el mundo, en cada hemisferio, en cada clima, grande
y pequeño, celebró el Triduo Sagrado. Jesucristo resucitó de entre los muertos para traer vida a cada persona
en todo momento. La vida resucitada viene a través de la Iglesia, a través de la proclamación de la Palabra
de Dios y a través de la presencia eucarística de Cristo resucitado.
Pedro, el primer Papa, trajo la red a la tierra, al igual que Dios, sin exclusividad, reúne a todas las personas
de todos los confines de la tierra en Su Iglesia Católica. El abrazo de la Iglesia es tan universal como el
amor de Jesucristo.
