We pray for “unity” among Christians. It is an “ecumenical” activity. This is great. But what does it mean? It means first of all agreeing that the goal is great and holy cause - namely that all followers of Christ would be united! Would truly become one! “One flock and one Shepherd” as the Lord wills (John 10:16). But we want to move forward logically, honestly and with good will. Some of the differences that have cropped up over time are very significant. It, alas, is not merely “tomeyto”, “tomahto”. We have aspects of our Faith that we will not - can not - let slide. They are central to our identity and our relationship with our Lord and with those around us (e.g. the Holy Eucharist!). No Christian, for the most part, says that one denomination is as good as another. If we thought so, we wouldn’t belong to one denomination and not another. We see the value in our Church. The more we understand our Ukrainian Catholic Faith, for example, we realize that we want to be where we are. It is dear to our heart and our soul. We wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. If we are good examples and our faith is alive, we will attract others to join us. However… we do share values with other Christians - especially the faithful of other Catholic Churches (Roman, Syrian, etc). But, not just Catholics. We certainly see a reflection of ourselves in the Orthodox Churches. We certainly see many of the same values that we hold dear among other Christians - such as the Bible and Judeo-Christian principles. We work together in so many ways for a better society. We pray together. We support each other. We work together. While, all the time, hoping and praying that we will truly be 100% united one day in one mystical Body of Christ - one Church. This will come to pass one day. We remain open to the Lord and to each other.

Pope Francis said Wednesday that moments of silence in the Mass should be intentional times of prayer, recollection and communion with God, rather than being viewed as times to just be quiet or not speak. “Silence is not reduced to the absence of words, but (is) the availability to listen to other voices: that of our heart and, above all, the voice of the Holy Spirit,” the Pope said Jan. 10. In silence, then, we discover “the importance of listening to our soul and then opening it to the Lord.”
