WWW.PARISWINECOMPANY.COM DECEMBER 2012 ORDER BY DEC 22, 2012 | WINE SHIPS JANUARY 2013 P aris Wine Company doesn’t officially exist yet, but some friends and family have started asking me when they can order some wine. We’ve been working on the website, as well as producing a series of videos from a trip to Burgundy, Champagne, and the Rhône in September. Hopefully the site will be up and running early next year. I’ve also been testing the patience of some very generous winemaker friends who have been holding onto cases of wine for me for quite some time now, so the moment seems right to get started. We’re not exactly like a regular wine shop. We travel constantly, visiting winemakers, tasting wines, and sharing the best of that experience with you. Our goal is to offer the exceptional, unusual, rare, and unique. When we find people making wines we love, we ask them to set a certain amount aside for the month. Once we’re up and running, those wines will appear on the web site, but for now, they exist only in this newsletter. With the exception of some highly allocated wines, everything is available on a first-come first served basis, and all orders must be placed before the order date. For gift orders we can email a pdf gift certificate to print out at home or send you gift certificate. After everyone has had a chance to order, the producer ships the wines directly to our warehouse in Paris for local pick-up or worldwide delivery. A quick note on shipping — we can help you arrange to ship your wine that you have purchased from us in France to your home address pretty much anywhere in the United States. Contact us for more details. Shipping details are at the end of the newsletter, but count $55-85 per case of 12 bottles delivered to your door from France via temperature-controlled ocean freight. Even including the cost of shipping, the prices listed here should be extremely competetive with the lowest online prices in the US.

In November 2010, I organized a tasting with a group of winemakers at Spring Restaurant in Paris All of the winemakers were featured in a fine book by George Bardawil called “Une Promesse du Vin”, which is worth seeking out if you read French. After the tasting, we organized a family-style meal, and one of the winemakers invited Axelle to join us. She mentioned that she made a bit of wine in Burgundy, and I asked her to send me a few bottles. I’ve been hooked ever since by these wines that are simple, honest, and delicious. The rare bottles of Vosne-Romanée show why this tiny commune is justly sought after by every Pinot lover on earth. Expect rich, perfumed Pinot with the typical violet aromas only found in Vosne. Les Terrasses is from an unusual vineyard that Axelle’s father cleared, terraced, and planted himself.

Domaine François Bertheau

chambOlle-muSiGny FrançOiS bertheau

M. Bertheau’s Premier Cru is a blend of four different vineyards - Groseilles, Gruenchers, Les Baudes, and Noirots. These bottles are the last of the of older vintages hiding in the cellar and they are both ready to drink now. The 2007 is a bit more developed and seductive, the 2008 is high toned with more acidity. Super classic and super tasty. Burghound review of the 07: “Not surprisingly, this is more elegant and finer still with a slightly riper, airy, even lacy red pinot fruit nose that is very Chambolle in character and complements perfectly the detailed, focused and balanced light to medium-bodied fla-vors that culminate in a linear finish. Lovely.”

Domaine alain BurGuet, GeVrey-chamBertin

eric and Jean-luc burGuet

I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so much at a wine tasting than the first time I visited Eric and Jean-Luc in Gevrey. It’s kind of like winemaker-brothers do stand up to hear them discuss the wines. The same joy and love comes through in the wines, but don’t forget they are seriously crafted. After a year of meticulous work in the vineyards, they allow for a slow fermentation, then an extended ageing up to 18 months in mostly used barrels for the old-vine cuvée Mes Favorites, a reference for Gevrey. Place des Lois is a cuvée of younger vines they stopped making in 2009, but Jean-Luc was really excited to share the 2007 — C’est une quille!! he says. Officially, quille means a bowling pin, but it’s also a slang word for a good bottle of wine.

This is a secret-weapon kind of wine that you want to have a case of. It’s good for all occasions when you’re not sure exactly what to drink. It’s good for Tuesday nights by yourself, or opening when you’re not sure if guests will appreciate the best bottles and you still want to drink something good. Agnès’ Bourgogne is aged only in tank, which is unsual in Burgundy. The result of an unoaked Pinot is a picnic wine extraordinaire.

People who love Chablis can easily name the two great producers whose wines easily stand out as the best in the region: Raveneau and Dauvissat. It won’t be long before a third name is added ot the list: Thomas Pico. Get in on his wines now. I’m serious. This is only village-level wine, the Premier Crus will be released in the Spring. I don’t always agree with The Wine Advocate, the old point-awarding workhorse, but I’ll quote them here: “Simply put, these are some of the most ground-breaking, intensely captivating wines being made in Chablis today. Readers should do whatever they can to taste them.”Chablis Vent d’Ange 2011 $21.99

Saumur antOine FOucault

The name Foucault in Saumur is kind of like royalty. Antoine’s father and uncle run the venerable Clos Rougeard, and Antoine is clearly inspired to make wines in the same uncompromisingly excellent style. The Saumur Blanc is a structured Chenin Blanc with great acidity and enormous ageing potential. Along with Romain Guiberteau and his family at Clos Rougeard, Antoine makes the finest whites from the terroir of Brézé, a the exceptional limestone vineyard north of Saumur. If this were Bordeaux, Burgundy, or Champagne, Brézé would be considered a grand cru, and one would expect to see an extra digit on the bill when ordering a bottle.

Watch the ViDeo

If you haven’t already, please watch the video I made on my last visit to Alexandre Bain. He’s living not far from Sancerre, but the wines are a world apart. Still 100% Sauvigon Blanc, these are some of the most intriguingly delicious wines in the Loire. All of Alex’s vineyards are certified biodynamic, and he plows most of them with Phénomène, his Percheron draught-horse. Spring is Alex’s take on the “classic” Sauvignon Blanc, but it’s not really classic. Pierre Precieuse is the main wine of the domaine— a rich, complex Sauvignon that tastes like a Chenin Blanc in disguise. Mademoiselle M spends 2 years in used foudres, and has a crazy sweet apricot jam aroma. You think it’s a sweet wine, but it’s not at all, and the taste is completely unexpected and amazing. Alex was kind enough to offer us a couple of rare magnums, and a few bottles of his extremely rare red wine, a blend of Pinot Noir and Gamay that he was forced to stop making when the vineyard was sold after the 2010 vintage.

Domaine Vacheron, sancerre

Jean-dOminique and Jean-laurent VacherOn

Watch the ViDeo

The Vacheron family has set the standard in Sancerre for three generations. When Jean-Dominique and Jean-Laurent came back from studying winemaking in Burgundy, they made two major changes - they converted the entire domaine to biodynamics, and they started experimenting with single-vineyard cuvées. The Belle Dame Pinot Noir was the first single-vineyard wine they made. Most people think of Sancerre as white wine, but it’s also a great place for red, and Belle Dame shows that Pinot Noir in Burgundy can hang with the big boys in Burgundy. They do a few single-vineyard whites now, and Guigne-Chèvres (which translates as Sour Cherry-Goat) is the most striking, and the rarest.

Domaine De l’echalier

rablay-Sur-layOn nichOlaS bertin and GeneVieVe delatte

I believe this is the first time Domaine de L’Echalier has ever been offered in the US. Nicholas and Genevieve have a 1.5 hectare vineyard in Rablay-sur-Layon, which is typcially known for sweet Chenin Blanc wines. Inspired by neighbors like the cult producer Richard Leroy, they’ve decided to make a dry wine, and it was clearly a good idea. 2010 is only their third vintage, and it’s pretty slamming. Half the wine is aged in used barrels, and half in fiberglass tanks. The two lots are then assembled before bottling less than 1000 cases per year. I’ve tasted this with a lot of people in the past few months, and it’s a huge crowd hit with wine snobs and teetotallers alike.

ThE ‘VraIMEnT Pas MaL’ sPEcIaL

Parisians are famous for never being amazed or impressed. If they say something is bon (good), that means they don’t like it. If they like something, they might be willing to admit that it’s pas mal (not bad). And if they really like something, occaisionally, you’ll get that grudging compliment, the vraiment pas mal (really not bad).

I thought it would be fun each month to offer one wine at a blow-out price — but by the case only. It’s December, so the obvious choice is Champagne. I love Jacques-son, and if you haven’t already tried it, you will too. It’s one of the last medium size, family-run houses in Champagne, and Jean-Hervé Chiquet has made a decade long focus on quality, slowly upping the level from good to very good, to vraiment pas mal.

Why is the Cuvée 736 the best non-vintage wine Jacquesson has ever made? Two reasons: the base of the 736 comes from the 2008 vintage, which was excellent for them. The second reason is Jacquesson has been steadily reducing the amount of vintage champagne they produce, in fact completely ceasing to make traditional vin-tage champagne after 2002. Instead, each year they have been adding more and more of their best wine to the 700 series, and 736 has substantially more of this exceptional base than ever. I had a chance to taste it at a salon hosted by a famous artisan winemaker in Champagne (yes, he owns the hotel in Avize, and you probably know who I’m talking about), and the 736 was already out of control. It’s just been released in France, and as far as I know, is currently unavailable anywhere else in the US.
